The objective of this work was to evaluate the degree of linear association between field emergence with the results of germination and vigor of corn seeds belonging to different initial vigor and submitted to agrochemical treatment. Following seed treatments with (i) carbendazim/thiram + imidaclopride/tiodicarbe; (ii) piraclostrobine, methyl tiophanate and fipronil; (iii) methyl tiophanate/fluazinam + bifentrine/imidaclopride; and (iv) metalaxyl-m/fludioxonil + thiamethoxam, seeds belonging to four different corn cultivars were assessed for their physiological potential. The strength of the Pearson correlation between germination and vigor tests with field emergence decreased after the chemical treatment, to a degree depending on the slurry composition, initial vigor and the test’s substrate.

Studies were carried to find out the effect of pre-sowing seed treatments to alleviate the dormancy of Palmyrah. A total of ten pre- sowing treatments viz., soaking in water for 24 h, soaking in 1% cow dung solution for 24 h and control (dry seeds) were given to fresh nuts of Palmyrah. At 4, 7, 12, 18 and 24 months after planting in the field, performance of seedlings were evaluated for field emergence, seedling height and the results revealed that seeds soaked in 1% cow dung solution followed by seeds soaked in 1% CaOCl2 (103 days). Seven months after sowing the seeds soaked in 1% CaOCl2 recorded the highest field emergence of 56% with high leave production per seedling (2.1) when compared to control. This study also confirms the effect of pre-sowing treatments on field emergence and frond production of Palmyrah nut which has dormancy.

Reduced quality ofcowpea due to late harvest and therefore pathogen incidence may influence the results of the germination test, whenever losses are associated with the agentsadhered to seed coat;in that context, chemical treatmentof seeds during the evaluations may reflect more accurately physiological quality of the samples, which in turn may assurethe emergence results of healthy seedlings and establishment of appropriate plant populations inthe field. This study had the objective ofevaluating the effects of fungicide treatment on minimizing physiological quality losses of cowpea seedsdue to lateharvestin germination and seedling development tests. The experimental design was the completely randomized with four replications. Treatments consisted of cowpea, cultivar BRS Guariba, harvested at different times (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days after physiological maturity)andtreated or not with fungicide carboxim+thiramfor seed quality tests. Seeds were initially characterized by seed moisture and mass. Afterwards, sampleswere evaluated by tests ofgermination percentage, germination first count, seedling length and dry matter. Data was submitted to variance analysisand means were analyzed as a 2x6 factorial. Means from chemical treatment and harvest times were compared by the Tukey test and regression analysis (p≤0.05), respectively, with subsequent unfolding of any significant interactions. Delayed harvest of cowpea seeds sharply reduces germination and vigor; fungicide treatment before performing physiological tests enables to establish thatseed quality losses can bein part caused by pathogen vehiculationonthe seed coat.

Studies were carried to find the effect of pre - sowing seed treatments on field emergence and seedling growth of palmyrah. The seeds were subjected to water soaking for 24 hours, soaking in 1% and 2% of cow dung solution, KNO3, H2O2 and CaOCl2 for 24 hours and dry seeds served as control. 120 days after sowing the observations were made on days taken for initial emergence, field emergence (%) and 210 days after sowing the observations were made on field emergence (%), seedling height (cm) and number of leaves per seedling. The results revealed that seeds soaked in 1% cow dung solution for 24 hrs took 102 days for initial emergence followed by seeds soaked in 1% CaOCl2 for 24 hrs (103 days), 210 days after sowing the seeds soaked in 1% CaOCl2 for 24 hrs. recorded the highest field emergence of 56 % and more number of leaves/seedling (2.1) when compared to control. It is recommended that palmyrah seeds soaked in 1% CaOCl2 for 24 hrs enhance the germination, field emergence and seedling growth.

Low phytic acid (LPA) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] genotypes reduce indigestible PA in soybean seeds in order to improve feeding efficiency of mono- and agastric animals, but often exhibit low field emergence, resulting in reduced yield. In this study, four LPA soybean varieties with two different genetic backgrounds were studied to assess their emergence and yield characters under 12 seed treatment combinations including two broad-spectrum, preplant fungicides (i.e., ApronMaxx (mefenoxam: (R,S)-2-[(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-methoxyacetylamino]-propionic acid methyl ester; fludioxonil: 4-(2,2-difluoro-1,3-benzodioxol-4-yl)-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitrile) and Rancona Summit (ipconazole: 2-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-5-(1-methylethyl)-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl) cyclopentanol; metalaxyl: N-(methooxyacetyl)-N-(2,6-xylyl)-DL-alaninate)), osmotic priming, and MicroCel-E coating. Two normal-PA (NPA) varieties served as controls. Both irrigated and non-irrigated plots were planted in Blacksburg and Orange, Virginia, USA in 2014 and 2015. Results revealed that three seed treatments (fungicides Rancona Summit and ApronMaxx, as well as Priming + Rancona) significantly improved field emergence by 6.4–11.6% across all genotypes, compared with untreated seeds. Seed priming was negatively associated with emergence across LPA genotypes. Seed treatments did not increase the yield of any genotype. LPA genotypes containing mips or lpa1/lpa2 mutations, produced satisfactory emergence similar to NPA under certain soil and environmental conditions due to the interaction of genotype and environment. Effective seed treatments applied to LPA soybeans along with the successful development of LPA germplasm by soybean breeding programs, will increase use of LPA varieties by commercial soybean growers, ultimately improving animal nutrition while easing environmental impact.

The experiment was conducted in post graduate Seed Testing Laboratory and Field Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj (U.P) during Rabi season 2020-2021, in order to standardize the suitable pre-sowing seed treatment for Lentil (K-75). Different pre-sowing seed treatments viz.,T0-Control (untreated), T1- KCL @1%, T2- KCL @ 3%, T3- KNO3 @ 1%, T4- KNO3 @ 3%, T5- Panchagavya @ 2%, T6 – GA3 @ 20ppm, T7 – Panchagavya @ 4%, T8 – GA3 @ 10ppm,T9 – Panchagavya @ 6%,T10 – Tulasi Leaf Extract @ 2%, T11 – Tulasi Leaf Extract @ 4%,T12 – Tulasi Leaf Extract @ 6% were evaluated by screening of 12 hour. It was found that all the pre-sowing seed treatments recorded the significant difference with that of control. In field condition highest field emergence percentage,yield and yielding attributes was found in T7 -Panchagavya @ 4%. Pre-sowing seed treatment with Panchagavya @ 4% followed by GA3 @ 10 ppm, Panchagavya @ 2%, KCL @ 1% significantly increased the germination and yielding attributes of Lentil. Pre-sowing seed treatments with Panchagavya (4%) and GA3 (10ppm) resulted in maximum increase in field emergence, vigour of Lentil seeds and found to be lowest in control seeds. Pre-sowing seed treatment that leads to a physiological condition that allows the seed to germinate more effectively and no costly equipment and chemical requirements could be used. Hence it is a simple method for overcoming weak germination and seedling establishment and helps to preserve agriculture and economical, non-toxic, eco-friendly sources.

Abstract: Although accelerated aging is one of the tests most used for evaluation of the physiological quality of soybean seeds, there are few studies that relate it to other physiological tests used for the crop. In this context, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship of accelerated aging to the results of physiological performance obtained in the vigor tests most frequently used in the soybean quality control system (germination, first count, seedling vigor classification, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, emergence speed index, final emergence in sand substrate, and field emergence). The experiment was conducted with seeds that had different vigor levels, adopting a completely randomized experimental design with four replications. Pearson simple correlation analysis (r) and simple linear regression analysis at both 1% and 5% probability were conducted on the data. The results showed that the seedling vigor classification test (r = 0.9160) and the field emergence test (r = 0.9198) were those that best correlated with accelerated aging, followed by the germination (r = 0.8690), first count of germination (r = 0.8460), and electrical conductivity (r = 0.8912) tests.

Iprodione or vinclozolin dusted on White Spanish and Goldberg onions, at 100g a.i./kg of seed, reduced germination by at least 40% and severely stunted the growth of seedlings nated on moistened filter paper. Similar rates of vinclozolin severely reduced field emergence and retarded the growth of White Spanish and Goldberg seedlings whereas the same rate of iprodione reduced field emergence and growth of Goldberg, but not White Spanish. Poor field emergence of treated seed could have been a germi consequence of inhibition of germination, stunted seedling growth or a combination of both factors.
