scholarly journals WHERE HAVE YOUR TIME AND SPACE GONE? AN ANALYSIS OF TECHNOLOGY ADDICTION, SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM, AND THE MODERN PANOPTICON

Little attention has been paid to why individuals are addicted to Internet-related experiences. This research identifies a key driver of technology addiction by combining three perspectives: behavioural science, economics, and psychoanalysis. Behavioural science reveals that technology addiction is produced by well-designed technology that fulfils humans’ fundamental needs. Capital economy analysis, called surveillance capitalism, offers a new interpretation of the data-driven economy, in which Internet technology enterprises collect feedback from users’ experiences and use said feedback to improve their products. The data accumulation logic facilitates automatic thinking and the modification of users’ behaviours to make a profit for the enterprises. Psychoanalysis clarifies the relationship between surveillance power and behavioural changes in society. The Panopticon, a central observation tower with a circle of prison cells, achieved an automatic function of power to control individuals’ performances and minds. Technology addiction is a symptom of the modern Panopticon because a common mechanism works between the Panopticon and surveillance capitalism, occupying individuals’ time and space and executing the automatic function of the surveillance power that facilitates behavioural modification. We conclude that depriving individuals of both time and space is a key driver of technology addiction that threatens sovereignty in a data-driven economy. We also provide three solutions to technology addiction: acknowledgement of the benefits and risks of technology use, acceptance of the complexity underlying technology-related issues, and protection of individual sovereignty. AbstractAstronomy education and public outreach (EPO) is one of the important part of the future development of astronomy. During the past few years, as the rapid evolution of Internet and the continuous change of policy, the breeding environment of science EPO keep improving and the number of related projects show a booming trend. EPO is no longer just a matter of to teachers and science educators but also attracted the attention of professional astronomers. Among all activates of astronomy EPO, the data driven astronomy education and public outreach (abbreviated as DAEPO) is special and important. It benefits from the development of Big Data and Internet technology and is full of flexibility and diversity. We will present the history, definition, best practices and prospective development of DAEPO for better understanding this active field.

<p>E-learning is advancing in Iran right now. The Iranian higher education system is applying electronic learning in order to conquer the limitations of the existing education system. These limitations include the growing number of applicants for entering universities, lack of classrooms for education, and universities’ tensions in replying to these needs. Also, ease of access to e-learning and a lack of financial resources are reasons for applying e-learning in Iran. In addition, the Iranian higher education system wants to progress with global changes in the information era and they see it as necessary to acquire information and knowledge. Meanwhile, web technology enjoys a special and significant role. This paper investigated barriers to using internet technology for e-learning in the Iranian context. The methodology employed both qualitative and quantitative techniques. In the qualitative stage, exploratory observations of eight virtual institutes for higher education and interviews with 20 experts in these institutes were used. The analysis of the data showed that socio-cultural, structural, educational, economic, and legal factors were the most prominent obstacles to web technology use; each factor comprised a number of components. So as to check the primacy of the factors and the extracted components at large, the researchers developed a Likert-type questionnaire; the questionnaire, which comprised the five types of obstacles and their related components, enjoyed a high degree of validity and reliability. Twenty students in each of the eight institutes were asked to fill out the questionnaire. The analysis of the data showed that socio-cultural factors are the most influential barriers to use of the Internet in e-learning.</p>

The development of mobile Internet technology makes people break away from the time and space restrictions, and enables them to interact with each other who bought the same brand as they do or who will buy products or services of a brand through the online virtual brand community. Mi Community is taken as an example in this study. The theories of the virtual brand community, interactivity in the community and consumer behavior are introduced, and a theoretical model that reflects the impact of interactivity in virtual brand communities on consumer behavior is built to illustrate the process of interactivity in communities promoting consumer behavior.

The construction industry faces multiple challenges, where transition to circular production is key. Digitalisation is a strategy to increase the sector’s productivity, competitiveness, and efficiency. However, digitalisation also impacts environmental goals, such as those concerning more eco-friendly solutions, energy efficiency, products recycling, and sustainability certifications. These strategies rely on data, understood as digital, interoperable, incremental and traceable. Data related concepts, such as digital data templates (DDT) and digital building logbooks (DBL), contribute to “good data”. Despite some research focused on each one, little importance has yet been given to their combination. Relevant relationships and overlaps exist, as they partially share the exact same data through the built environment life cycle. This research aims to provide improved understanding on the role of these concepts and their contribution to a more circular industry. The review develops conceptualisations where DDT and DBL are complementary and framed within an incremental digital twin construction (DTC). Misconceptions or confrontations between these three solutions can therefore stand down, for the benefit of a data-driven priority. To increase understanding and reduce misconceptions, our study developed the “Digital data-driven concept” (D3c). This concept contribution is the ability to structure, store, and trace data, opening way to streamlined digital transformation impacting circular built environment concerns.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to find out: the functionality of public libraries in the provision of needed information resources; the impact of the use of modern electronic gadgets as the level of patronage; the influence of old technology use on libraries; and the globalization effect on the user behavior toward public libraries. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted the descriptive survey design since the opinion, perceptions and observation of public library users were examined. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 185 respondents. A well-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. The instrument was validated by research experts in the area of test and measurement and in library and information science research. A reliability test was carried out using 25 academic library users in Delta State University, Abraka, to establish a coefficient of 0.87 using Cronbach’s α. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics for research questions while the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient analysis and linear regression analysis were used to test hypotheses. Findings Public libraries in Nigeria are functional and accessible. There is inadequacy in modern information and communication technology devices that aid information provision and dissemination, Globalization and modernization has negatively impacted the patronage of public libraries. The influence of deterritorialization has influenced the user attitude toward regular use. Globalization has made time and space much more closer, thereby reducing contact and interaction between library staff and users in the public library system. Globalization and/or modernization has brought not only challenges to public libraries, but also opportunities to exploit. Research limitations/implications The findings of the study were drawn from one sampled area to represent the entirety of the country. The respondents were public library users who were found using public libraries; therefore, less time was allocated to answering research instrument, thereby potentially and probably not responded to with utmost concern. Practical implications Public library functionality will be deterred if necessary actions are taken to improve the quality of service provision. There will likely be a reduced patronage of public libraries if users do not get the most recent information as supposed. There is already a negative effect of globalization and modernization on the functionality of public libraries. There is an urgent need to update and modernize public libraries across the nation for effective and efficient service delivery. Social implications Globalization has led to the reduction of interpersonal and social interaction which is supposed to promote friendliness between public library users and the staff. It also promoted the use of modern technologies such as telecommunication devices, information disseminating gadgets in homes while inhibiting public library patronage time and space is now been maximized for the benefit of library users who are distant from the public library location in as much as information has become accessible at their fingertips. To make use of the latest Internet technology to provide innovative support for teacher education, a comprehensive study is made on DDEDSS (data driven education decision support system) and DDEDSS software prototype is designed and developed as an auxiliary tool for educational decision-making. At the same time, the two sessions of education data is collected and tested in practice. The multidimensional summation and average are carried out for different time, different source regions, different gender learners and different subjects. The research results show that the system can evaluate learners' learning and further provide decision-making basis for curriculum optimization and class adjustment. It can be seen that DDEDSS is a frontier educational research, which has important research significance.
