Mathematical reasoning skills are critical for students to solve math problems. The research objective was to determine the reasoning ability of junior high school students in solving number problems. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with case studies. The research subjects were 27 students consisting of 14 female students and 13 male students. A total of 10 questions were tested containing five multiple-choice questions, and five description questions. From the results of data analysis, 3% of students had high reasoning abilities, 43% of students had moderate reasoning abilities, 30% of students had low reasoning abilities, 13% of students had meagre reasoning abilities.

This research was conducted on junior high school students with the aim of improving mathematical reasoning abilities, student activity and student attitudes towards the application of open ended approach learning. This type of research is Classroom Action Research. The subject of this study is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Padangsidimpuan 2017-2018 Academic Year, which are selected in class VIII-2 with a total of 24 students. The conclusions that can be drawn from this study are 1) increasing mathematical reasoning abilities through the application of mathematical learning with an open-ended approach to students of class VIII-2. The increase in students' mathematical reasoning abilities was obtained at 0.5 with the medium criteria, 2) increasing student learning activities through the application of mathematics learning with an open-ended approach to students of class VIII-2. The increase in student activity was obtained at 0.46 with moderate criteria, 3) increasing student attitudes towards mathematics through the application of mathematics learning with an open-ended approach to students of class VIII-2. The increase in student activity is 0.6 with moderate criteria.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan penalaran dan kemandirian belajar pada materi persamaan garis lurus siswa SMP. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Tempat penelitian dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 5 Cimahi pada kelas VIII semester ganjil tahun ajaran 2017-2018. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 5 Cimahi pada materi Persamaan Garis Lurus. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII E. Untuk memperoleh data penelitian digunakan instrumen berupa tes soal uraian dan angket kemandirian belajar. Hasil penelitian didapat kesimpulan: (1) tingkat kemampuan penalaran matematis siswa dalam penyelesaian masih level rendah; (2) kesulitan siswa pada umunya belum memahami soal dan prakonsep masih rendah; (3) siswa belum tertanam rasa belajar secara mandiri. Kata kunci: kemampuan penalaran matematis, kemandirian belajar.   ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the ability of reasoning and self-regulated learning on the material of equations of straight lines of junior high school students. This research method using qualitative descriptive method. This research is conducted in SMP Negeri 5 Cimahi in Grade VIII of academic year 2017-2018. The population of this study is the students of class VIII SMP Negeri 5 Cimahi who have studied the material of the equation of straight line. The subject of the research is the students of class VIII E. To obtain the research data used the instrument in the form of test description and questionnaire self-regulated learning. The results of the research concluded: (1) the level of students' mathematical reasoning ability in the problem solving is still low level; (2) students' difficulties in general have not understood the problem and the preconception is still low; (3) students have not embedded the sense of learning independently. This study aims to obtain an overview of the characteristics and levels of metacognitive ability of junior high school students as seen from the melancholic and choleric personality types according to Hippocrates-Galenus. The results of this study are expected to be used as consideration for teachers in designing mathematics lessons that pay attention to personality types and students' metacognitive processes. A qualitative descriptive approach was chosen to answer the research objectives. At the same time, the research subjects were two grade VII students with melancholic and choleric personality types in one of the Muhammadiyah Junior High Schools in Jepara. The purposive sampling technique used in this research to subject selection. Data collection techniques used personality type questionnaires, metacognition tests, and interviews. Data analysis used three steps, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results showed that melancholic and choleric students had different characteristics and levels of metacognition. Melancholic students are at the metacognitive level between tacit use and aware use, while the rest of the cholerics are at the tacit use metacognition level. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan gambaran tentang karakteristik dan jenjang kemampuan metakognisi siswa SMP yang dilihat dari tipe kepribadian melankolis dan koleris menurut Hippocrates-Galenus. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat dijadikan sebagai bahan pertimbangan guru dalam mendesain pembelajaran matematika yang memperhatikan tipe kepribadian dan proses metakognisi siswa. Pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dipilih untuk menjawab tujuan penelitian. Sedangkan subjek penelitian adalah dua orang siswa kelas VII yang bertipe kepribadian melankolis dan koleris di salah satu SMP Muhammadiyah di Jepara. Adapun teknik pemilihan subjek penelitian menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan angket tipe kepribadian, tes metakognisi, dan wawancara. Analisis data menggunakan tiga langkah yakni reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa melankolis dan koleris memiliki karakteristik dan jenjang metakognisi berbeda. Siswa melankolis berada pada jenjang metakognisi antara tacit use dan aware use, sedangkan sisa koleris berada pada jenjang metakognisi tacit use. The abilities that must be mastered by high school students according to the demands of the 2013 curriculum include reasoning. Students who have good reasoning abilities make it easier to understand mathematics. But in reality there are still many students who have low mathematical reasoning ability, seen when they have difficulty solving math problems. This research objective is to prove the habit of solving open-ended problems that can improve the mathematical reasoning ability of junior high school students based on the level of initial mathematical ability: high, medium, and low. The study used an experimental method with a "One-Group pre-test post-test design". Randomly, selected 77 grade VII students of SMP Negeri in Bekasi as a sample. The prerequisite test shows that each level of data comes from groups that are normally distributed and homogeneous. The results showed normal gain, both overall and level showed improvement. Based on the t test obtained p value of 0.000 < 0.005, meaning this study can prove student habits in solving open-ended problems when learning mathematics on triangles and quadrilateral, can improve students' mathematical reasoning abilities.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan langkah-langkah penyelesaian yang ditempuh siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah matematika berdasarkan tahapan Polya pada siswa SMP  ditinjau dari berpikir kritis FRISCO (Fokus, Reason, Inference, Situasion, Clarity, and Overview). Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengambilan subjek menggunakan purposive sampling dan diperoleh 3 subjek yang diambil dari siswa SMP Pangudi Luhur Salatiga dengan kategori berkemampuan tinggi, sedang dan rendah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa profil pemecahan masalah subjek pada tahap: (1) Memahami masalah, subjek kategori tinggi dan sedang mampu menentukan apa yang diketahui dan ditanyakan dengan tepat serta memenuhi kriteria berpikir kritis FRISCO, sedangkan subjek kategori rendah belum mampu (2) Menyusun rencana pemecahan masalah, subjek kategori tinggi dan sedang mampu menentukan keterkaitan antara informasi serta memenuhi kriteria FRISCO, sedangkan subjek kategori rendah tidak memenuhi kriteria; (3) Melaksanakan rencana pemecahan, subjek kategori tinggi dan sedang mampu menggunakan langkah-langkah melaksanakan rencana, serta memenuhi kriteria berpikir kritis FRISCO, kategori rendah tidak memenuhi kriteria berpikir kritis AbstractThis research is aims to describe steps of how junior high school students solve the math problems based on Polya Steps, this research is viewed from FRISCO (Focus, Reason, Inference, Situation, Clarity and Overview) critical thinking. This is a descriptive qualitative research. Subjects sampling method used is Purposive Sampling and three subjects taken are from Pangudi Luhur Salatiga Junior High School students which were divided into diferent categories; high, medium, and low proficiency in Math. The results of the research show that: on step (1) Understanding Problem, subjects on high and medium categories could analyze what was asked correctly and could fulfill  FRISCO critical thinking criterias, while, subject on low category could not. (2) Developing Plans to Solve the Problem, subjects on high and medium categories could decide interconection of informations and also could fulfill FRISCO critical thinking criterias,meanwhile, subject on low category could not. (3) Do the Plans to Solve the Problem, subjects on high and medium categories could follow the steps in the plans to solve the problems correctly  and also could fulfill FRISCO critical thinking criterias, while, subject on low category could not follow the steps correctly, unable to answer the questions and also unable to fulfill critical thinking criterias.

This study aims to describe and analyze the mathematical reasoning and problem solving abilities of PGSD students, Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan, based on the gender in resolving story problems. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The research subjects were 6 PGSD students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan who were selected based on the criteria of academic abilities; students with high reasoning, moderate reasoning, and low reasoning. The data collection techniques were observation, test, and interview. The data analysis was based on the results of test, observation, and interview obtained by students and based on table rubrics. Data analysis was carried out by the researcher using 6 subjects as representatives consisting of 3 males and 3 females with criteria previously mentioned (high, moderate, low). The results of data analysis on mathematical reasoning and problem solving abilities based on gender were female students' mathematical reasoning abilities were superior than male students' mathematical reasoning abilities. ABSTRAK: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan penalaran matematis dan habits of mind siswa SMP pada materi segiempat dan segitiga. Metode penelitian mengunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Tempat penelitian dilaksanakan di salah satu SMP kota Cimahi pada kelas VII semester genap tahun ajaran 2017-2018. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII di salah satu SMP kota Cimahi pada materi materi segiempat dan segitiga. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII. Untuk memperoleh data penelitian digunakan instrumen berupa tes soal uraian dan angket habits of mind. Hasil penelitian didapat kesimpulan: tingkat kemampuan penalaran matematis siswa dalam penyelesaian masih rendah, kesulitan siswa pada umumnya belum memahami soal dan pemahaman konsep masih rendah dan siswa belum terbiasa berpikir dalam belajar.                                                                                                                       ABSTRACT:  This study aims to analyze the ability of mathematical reasoning and habits of mind of junior high school students in rectangular and triangular material. This researchmethod using qualitative descriptive method. The place of research is conducted in one of junior high school Cimahi in class VII even semester of academic year 2017-2018. The population of this study is the students of class VII in one of junior high school Cimahi on material material quadrilateral and triangle. The subjects of the study were students of class VII. To obtain the research data used the instrument in the form of test description and questionnaire habits of mind. The results of the research concluded: the level of students' mathematical reasoning ability in the settlement is still low, students' difficulties in general have not understood the problem and understanding the concept is still low,  students are not used to thinking in learning.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the mathematics literacy skills of high school students in terms of gender, especially in the material linear program. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data Collection was carried out on the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Meraksa Aji. The subject was 31 students which consisted of 14 females and 17 males. The data was collected using tests and interviews and analyze use method triangulation. The results showed that female students' literacy skills were better than male students. Female students find the indicators of interpreting mathematics to solve problems, formulate problems systematically and use concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning in mathematics. Meanwhile, male students have only fulfilled the indicators of interpreting mathematics to solve problems.

The study aims to identify kinds of high school students’ misrepresent in doing their tasks and to provide the appropriate scaffolding as a solution to help the students. This is a qualitative descriptive research. The research subject consists of three junior high school students who have different abilities in Mathematics. They were selected out of 92 students. This research studied the conceptual errors, procedural mistakes, and students’ technical mistakes in working on the problems based on the stages of Kastolan mistakes and the scaffoldings given. Furthermore, the data were collected by using the way of testing, interviewing and documenting techniques. The research data were guarantee validated with the triangulation method. The result of the research showed that there were some errors done by the students in doing the tasks. They were the conceptual errors, procedural mistakes, and technical errors. The scaffoldings given to help the students do the tasks for Level 1 (environmental provisions), Level 2 (explaining, reviewing dan restructuring), and Level 3 (developing conceptual thinking).

This research aimed to identify differences in problem solving skill between male and female students. The research subjects were 50 students (21 male and 29 female) who were taken by random sampling technique from two high schools in Malang. The research instrument was adapted from problem solving instruments of Maries & Singh (2018). The data was analyzed by statistic descriptive and Kruskall Wallis test (p-value <0.05). The results showed that overall, there was no significant difference between male and female students (p-value>0.05). However male students performed better than female students on preparing the action (p-value<0.05). The results of this research can be a consideration and input for practitioners of education to improve the quality of education, especially in Indonesia.
