Flower Survey of Tree Species of Riparian Vegetation in Astorga, Brazil The floristic composition and successional stage of tree species in riparian vegetation of the Ribeirão da Içara (23º09’51.74’’S and 51º39’21.60’’W) in the municipality of Astorga in the northern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, are analyzed. Climate is Cfa and average altitude is 532 m. The 0.5 ha area under analysis belongs to the Semideciduous Seasonal Forest and consists of a stretch of riparian vegetation formed by native vegetation with dense tree groups, creepers, ground vegetation and reforestation. Surrounding ground is occupied by livestock and the production of sugar cane and orange trees. Botanic material was collected by 3-day monthly expeditions between December 2010 and March 2011. Tree specimens in the reproduction stage were sampled and voucher specimens were incorporated to the collection of the State University of Maringá. Only the vegetal parts of some species were collected and the material was identified by specific bibliography and compared with specimens at the university, following the APG III system. Species were classified with regard to their successional stage by specific bibliography and field observations, although exotic and indeterminate plants were not taken into account in current analysis. Eighty-four species, with 77 genera and 28 families, were registered. Six were identified at genus level, four at family level and one family was undetermined. The Fabaceae had the highest number of species (23), followed by Myrtaceae (6), Malvaceae and Meliaceae (5), Anacardiaceae, Bignoniaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Sapindaceae (4), Rutaceae (3). Further, 69.05% of species belong to these families. Machaerium (3) was the genus with the highest number of species. With regard to the successional stage, 35.93% were species of the pioneer succession class; 32.81% initial secondary class; 20.31% late secondary class and 0.44% climax class. Results, featuring predominantly pioneer and secondary species, show a gradual replacement of species, perhaps related to the removal of commercially relevant species. ABSTRACT This study was conducted in a forest under restoration process, which belongs to the company Holcim Brasil S/A, in the municipality of Barroso, state of Minas Gerais (21º00'to 22º00'S and 43º00' to 44º00'W), where 40 plots (2 x 2 m) were set, spaced at 10 m, forming eight strata parallel to the watercourse present in the area. Floristic composition and natural regeneration stratum were characterized, and the formed strata allowed evaluating whether the riparian vegetation and watercourse influence on the local regeneration. It was found 162 individuals of 13 families, 18 genera and 22 species, and 10,125 individuals/ha were estimated. Successional classes from pioneer and early secondary and zoochory dispersion syndrome prevailed among species and individuals. The watercourse and riparian vegetation did not exercise significant influence (p> 0.05) on the number of species and regenerating individuals among the different strata of the forest. The diversity index of Shannon-Wiener (H') and equability of Pielou (J') were 2.691 and 0.870, respectively. The species Psidium guajava and Myrtaceae families presented the highest VI (value of importance). Natural regeneration analysis showed the low floristic diversity in the area, suggesting that corrective management actions should be adopted.

Abstract Background: Coffee and livestock degrade Seasonal Semideciduous Forests in the Zona da Mata region of the Atlantic Forest biome in Brazil. The floristic composition must be studied to preserve and conserve forest remnants. The objective was to evaluate the arboreal structure, characterize the seed dispersal syndrome and the ecological group of forest species of a 45-year-old restored area in Viçosa, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The phytosociological parameters density, frequency, dominance and importance value, Shannon's diversity and Pielou's equability were evaluated considering individuals with DBH (diameter at breast height) ≥ 5 cm in sixteen contiguous plots (25 x 25 m). Results: A total of 1,323 individuals from 109 species and 35 botanical families were registered, of which 90 were native and 15 exotic species. The importance value (VI= 11.9%) was highest for Guarea guidonia (Fabaceae). The Shannon's diversity (H') was 3.46 and the equability (J') was 0.74. The number of species (33%) was largest for the initial secondary successional class and the number of individuals with zoochoric dispersion syndrome for the late secondary class (38.3%). The basal area was 44.1 m² ha-1 and the average height was 13 m (ranging from 2 to 32 m). Conclusion: The restored Semideciduous Seasonal Forest is in an advanced successional stage with zoochoric species and a great number of late secondary species.

Spatial-temporal dynamics of deforestation in the Citizenship Territories of Northeastern GoiásA b s t r a c tEnvironmental monitoring data have been showing the migration of deforestation to the northern region of Brazilian Savana biome, which until then did not attract much interest in the farming sector. In Goiás, it is noticeable the increase in pressure on the native vegetation remnants concentrated, mainly, in the northeastern region of the state. This scenario led to this investigation, which aims to evaluate the annual deforestation rates between 2008 and 2017 for the Northeast of Goiás Municipalities based on the processing of data from Prodes Cerrado, provided by the National Institute of Space Research (INPE). The results indicate that, among the State planning regions, the northeastern region has the second highest accumulated deforestation rate between 2008 and 2017 and the highest growth in 2017. Also, the deforestation rate among the municipalities and between microregions (Vão do Paranã and Chapada dos Veadeiros), where are the Citizenship Territories, present differences related to topography, presence of distinct categories of protected areas and specific territorial development policies. We highlight the behavior of municipalities that in 2007 had a higher percentage of converted land for farming uses and remaining vegetation lower than required by current legislation, and still maintained high rates of deforestation of native vegetation during the analyzed period. The proximity to the farming development region of MATOBIA may also be driving deforestation in the Northeastern Goiás.Keywords: Goiás, Brazilian Savanna, environmental patrimony, remote sensing, Prodes.

The article shows that knowledge of the site of a particular forest stand, together with research results and experience, can provide information that is important for the cultivation of mountain forests, including knowledge of the composition of the tree species and the structure and growth capacity of natural forest. Furthermore, certain sites can, thus, be characterized by factors that influence restocking, such as snow mould, lush ground vegetation or low temperature. The guidelines«minimale Pflegemassnahmen» – «Minimal tending of protection forests» (WASSER und FREHNER, 1996) are based on this principle. For individual sites, warnings about natural dangers such as rock fall or statements concerning nature conservation can be made (e.g., the occurrence of tree species, suitability as a biotope for Capercaille). In conclusion, two research projects on the relationship between site and natural dangers will be presented.

The  forest of Halle (560 ha), situated 20 km south of Brussels is covered by a  beech (Fagus sylvatica)  forest, locally mixed with secundary species (Tilia,  Fraxinus, Acer, Quercus,... ). In almost all  stands, herbal vegetation is dominated by bluebell (Hyacinthoides  non-scripta).     The research intended to classify 36 plots of different tree species  composition according to their site quality. Three classification methods  were compared: the first one based on the indicator value of the understorey  vegetation, a second one on the humus morphology and a last one on some  quantitative soil characteristics. According to the plant sociological site  classification, the plots have the same site quality. However, humus forms  differ apparently and significant differences were found in pH value and base  cation saturation of the soil, abundance and biomass of earthworms and  biomass of the ectorganic horizon. Tree species proved to be the main cause  of these differences.     The results illustrate that the herbal vegetation is not always a reliable  indicator of site quality. In the case of a homogeneous vegetation dominated  by one or more indifferent species, classification on humus morphology or  soil analysis are more appropriate. In the forest of Halle, the tree species  is probably the main cause of the observed differences in site quality.

Abstract Bovine coccidiosis is a disease of major importance in cattle herds across the world. The disorder mainly affects young calves, and E. bovis and E. zuernii are considered the most pathogenic species of the genus, however, E. alabamensis have been described in grazing calves. In this study, the prevalence of Eimeria spp. was evaluated in calves on dairy farms in the northern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. Four hundred calves on 44 dairy farms were tested for the presence of coccidian oocysts. The positives were re-examined and the oocysts were morphometrically analyzed for species identification. All the farms were contaminated and 205 animals (51.25%) presented Eimeria spp. oocysts. Among these, 146 animals (71.22%) were co-infected by two or more species of coccidia. Ten species of Eimeria were identified: E. bovis (in 30.25% of the positive samples), E. alabamensis (26.75%), E. zuernii (22.00%), E. ellipsoidalis (18.50%), E. auburnensis (13.75%), E. canadensis (8.00%), E. cylindrica (7.25%), E. subspherica (5.00%), E. bukidnonensis (3.00%) and E. brasiliensis (0.75%). This study demonstrates the high prevalence of Eimeria spp. in the northern region of Paraná, Brazil, and detection for the first time in our region the pathogenic species E. alabamensis.

Changes in the floristic composition over an eight-year period in a logged area at the Tapajós National Forest in Brazilian Amazonia arc discussed. Two treatments of different intensities of logging were compared with an undisturbed (control) forest. Data were collected from permanent sample-plots. The effects of logging on floristic composition were stronger in the more heavily logged treatment. The number of species decreased immediately after logging, but started to increase before the fifth year after logging and was higher at the end of the study period than before logging. The more heavily logged plots responded more to disturbances, as judged by the increase in the number of species during the period after logging. This forest appears to recover its initial floristic composition after disturbance without intervention.

Abstract The streams in a watershed form a hierarchical network system. From the perspective of the river continuum, this classification system is the result of gradual increase in traffic. This study analyzed the riparian species richness, diversity and environmental factors along a six-order hierarchical mountain river in the Donghe watershed, China. A total of 34 sampling sites were sampled to study the spatial distribution of riparian plants among different stream orders. The results showed: Environmental factors among stream orders had significant differences. Among stream order, species richness showed remarkable differences. The species richness rose firstly and dropped afterwards except for tree species richness; tree species richness decreased while stream order increased. The same is true for shrub quadrat species richness. Shannon-Wiener diversity, Simpson dominance and Pielou uniformity showed significant difference among stream orders; Shannon-Wiener diversity rose firstly then dropped afterwards. For integrated environmental factors and community characteristics, we found the changes of stream orders had a significant impact on riparian habitats and riparian vegetation. Further analysis showed that riparian vegetation experienced different types and degrees of disturbance in different stream orders. This meant that a hierarchical management strategy should be applied to riparian vegetation management.
