Abstract Preceding works tend to explicate affordance through supposing what is happening here and now. They seldom relate it to actual social, diachronic activities, such as foreign language learning. To tackle this issue, this study explores how students actualize affordances in technology-enriched language learning environment (TELLE) by examining their perezhivanija (lived and emotional experience), a term borrowed from sociocultural theory. Because an individual’s social life is a developing process or a perezhivanie Perezhivanie is the singular form of perezhivanija. , it is necessary to base the research in a dynamic development of language learning to figure out how the affordances are actualized. Narrative interviews were adopted to collect data from three Chinese college students who learn English as a foreign language in a Northeastern university in China. The results showed that due to the students’ different past perezhivanija in English learning, their present interpretations of the perceived affordances in TELLE varied. This influenced hugely in their actions taken during their English learning in college to actualize the affordances. The findings indicated that the actualization of affordances is historical, dynamic and developmental instead of static. It does not lie in the autonomy of the students or the teachers, but in the institutional and cultural legitimacy of technology use in student’s social life. The paper contributes to the application of affordance theory in foreign language learning and provides implications to language teaching practice in TELLE.

EFL (English as a foreign language) learners seem destined to make errors and continuously need to test their changing language levels. However, the unbalance between supply and demand always exists in the process of learning English. Teachers sometimes are also tired of doing repetitive jobs to correct the same mistakes of nonnative speakers. Therefore, many researchers tend to improve the efficiency of learning and teaching processes by using computer-assisted instruction. Specifically, artificial intelligence software is an unstoppable trend to solve this problem. This study aims to find which characteristics in IELTS Liulishuo (an artificial English-learning app to improve IELTS performance) are following the elements of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) pedagogy (Chapelle, 2003). Meanwhile, it will also be evaluated under the mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) principles and some concepts of AI-powered foreign language software, as was put forward by Stockwell (2013) and Pokrivcakova (2019). The results showed that IELTS Liulishuo has affordability to be used as an online platform for foreign English learning. More importantly, it shed some light on CALL pedagogy and the design of artificial applications of foreign language learning.

Developing the speaking skill is one of the critical aspects of foreign language learning/teaching. Few researchers have addressed the issue of adult English learning in conversation clubs. This paper is a preliminary attempt to describe Adult English Conversation Club (AECC) practice in non-formal educational context. In order to study AECC, we interviewed a teacher and four adult learners and observed speaking sessions at an Adult English Conversation Club in Riga, Latvia. The responses revealed the strong points and disadvantages of AECC, crucial factors in organizing the conversation sessions, the reasons why adults attend a conversation club and how the sessions could be improved. As only one conversation club was researched in our paper, further studies are needed to develop a proper methodology for AECC.

Three tasks were used to predict English learning by Finnish children over a three-year period. In the pseudoword repetition task the pupils had to repeat aloud tape-recorded pseudowords sounding like Finnish or English. In the pseudoword copying task the pupils saw strings of letters resembling Finnish or English words and copied them when they had disappeared from view. When comparing syntactic-semantic structures, the pupils had to find the syntactically matching pairs from two sets of Finnish sentences. Repetition and copying accuracy and the ability to compare syntactic-semantic structures predicted English learning. Intercorrelations between test scores and English and mathematics grades suggest that repetition and copying accuracy were specifically related to language learning. It is concluded that the ability to represent unfamiliar phonological material in working memory underlies the acquisition of new vocabulary items in foreign-language learning.
