It is difficult for a modern doctor who relies on a wide range of laboratory diagnostic capabilities to imagine the path of mistakes, insights and delusions traveled by doctors of the past. How exactly through clinical observation the disease was observed. The archival article Half-tree-day fever published in the journal is an example of a clinical and epidemic description of an outbreak of an acute infectious disease, the etiology of which remains unknown. The more interesting are the distinguishing issues of differential diagnostics.

The article presents the comparative analysis of application of terpene-containing medicine Antiran (1:3 solution) and 0.06% chlorhexidine bigluconate solution in a complex therapy of patients with chronic generalized parodontitis. According to the curative effect, these drugs are comparable with antibacterial and antiseptic agents, but they act more gently and, as a rule, do not cause side effects. Currently, as a etiotropic therapy of periodontitis, a wide range of drugs affecting the parodontal pathogenic microflora, irrational use of antibacterial agents has acquired the status of a global problem of modern medicine, since it leads to the emergence of resistant strains of microorganisms that are poorly sensitive or resistant to treatment. The medicaments were used in ultrasonic scaling and for passive ultrasonic irrigation of periodontal pockets during curettage process. The results were evaluated according to the PMA, SBI, PI indexes, an extravazation time formation and periodontal pockets depth. The first total time period of clinical observation established that inflammation process was eliminated earlier when Antiran was used. Thus our study demonstrated and substantiated the successful experience of Antiran application in periodontal practice.

Pertussis or whooping cough is an acute infectious disease of the respiratory tract caused principally byBordetella pertussisand less commonly byBordetella parapertussis(1). Until two decades ago, pertussis in adults was a medical curiosity (2-4), but with the purification of specificBordetellaspecies antigens, the development of reliable enzyme immunoassays allowing accurate serological diagnosis and better understanding of the duration of immunity from vaccination, it has been clearly demonstrated thatB pertussisis a common cause of prolonged cough in adults. Indeed, its incidence has been increasing gradually over the past decade in both adults and adolescents. Given the recognition of the importance of pertussis as a cause of prolonged cough in adults and the advent of the new acellular pertussis vaccines, it is timely to review current concepts of the pathogenesis of pertussis, its epidemiology in adults and the utility of the anticipated impact of the acellular vaccine.

COVID 19 is a newly recognized infectious disease that has rapidly spread with no verified treatment available. It is caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2). In Convalescent plasma therapy, the yellowish liquid or the plasma from the recovered blood is used to treat the patient suffering from the same illness. For more than 100 years it has been used to treat severe infections with varying degrees of success. For this present infection, multiple clinical trials on plasma therapy are still under vigorous investigations. Despite the very low chance of risks like allergies, lung damage, and transmission of blood-related infection, the therapy has shown a positive result in the recovery of the patients. Many experts are observing its use as a “stopgap measure” until effective vaccines and antiviral drugs are available in a wide range. However, the main challenges faced are finding suitable donors, its expensiveness in the whole procedure, and inability to perform on a large scale. In this commentary, summarization of the convalescent plasma therapy is done as a hopeful alternative therapy of severe or critical COVID 19. It has also emphasized the promising results shown since the past while the use of this therapy in various infectious diseases.

Over the past few decades, nanoparticles of metals, and in particular silver, with a diameter of less than 100 nm have significantly expanded their field of application for various biomedical purposes. So, silver nanoparticles have great potential in a wide range of applications as antimicrobial agents, coatings for biomedical products, carriers for drug delivery, bioengineering, since they have discrete physical properties and wide biochemical functionality. Studies have shown that the size, morphology, stability and properties (chemical and physical) of metal nanoparticles are strongly influenced by the conditions of the experiment, the kinetics of the interaction of metal ions with reducing agents and the adsorption processes of the stabilizer with metal nanoparticles. This review aims to analyze the use of silver nanoparticles in modern medicine based on data from domestic and foreign literature over the past five years. The study confirmed the high biological activity of drugs with nanoserebrum as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial agents, antifungals, the presence of an inhibitory effect on protozoa, antioxidant and anticancer effects, and substantiated the relevance of use in bioengineering and dentistry. However, rapid advances and advances in technology have led to concerns about the potential risk associated with the use and application of silver nanoparticles to human health and the environment. Therefore, this review attempts to characterize and quantify the potential harmful effects of silver nanoparticles on the health of laboratory animals and humans, and focuses on ways to neutralize or reduce the toxic effects of silver nanoparticles on the human body.

A diverse range of infectious diseases has presented with acute renal failure (ARF) in the West of Scotland in the past five years. Full recovery is possible provided the specific diagnosis is made early and treatment with temporary renal support is combined with effective antimicrobial therapy.

The electron accelerator, as inserted between the electron source (injector) and the imaging column of the HVEM, is usually a strong lens and should be optimized in order to ensure high brightness over a wide range of accelerating voltages and illuminating conditions. This is especially true in the case of the STEM where the brightness directly determines the highest resolution attainable. In the past, the optical behavior of accelerators was usually determined for a particular configuration. During the development of the accelerator for the Arizona 1 MEV STEM, systematic investigation was made of the major optical properties for a variety of electrode configurations, number of stages N, accelerating voltages, 1 and 10 MEV, and a range of injection voltages ϕ0 = 1, 3, 10, 30, 100, 300 kV).

AbstractEvasion of immune recognition is a hallmark of cancer that facilitates tumorigenesis, maintenance, and progression. Systemic immune activation can incite tumor recognition and stimulate potent antitumor responses. While the concept of antitumor immunity is not new, there is renewed interest in tumor immunology given the clinical success of immune modulators in a wide range of cancer subtypes over the past decade. One particularly interesting, yet exceedingly rare phenomenon, is the abscopal response, characterized by a potent systemic antitumor response following localized tumor irradiation presumably attributed to reactivation of antitumor immunity.

Building on Tzvetan Todorov's observation that the detective novel ‘contains not one but two stories: the story of the crime and the story of the investigation’, this essay argues that detective novels display a remarkably wide range of attitudes toward the several pasts they represent: the pasts of the crime, the community, the criminal, the detective, and public history. It traces a series of defining shifts in these attitudes through the evolution of five distinct subgenres of detective fiction: exploits of a Great Detective like Sherlock Holmes, Golden Age whodunits that pose as intellectual puzzles to be solved, hardboiled stories that invoke a distant past that the present both breaks with and echoes, police procedurals that unfold in an indefinitely extended present, and historical mysteries that nostalgically fetishize the past. It concludes with a brief consideration of genre readers’ own ambivalent phenomenological investment in the past, present, and future each detective story projects.


What did it mean to be a man in Scotland over the past nine centuries? Scotland, with its stereotypes of the kilted warrior and the industrial ‘hard man’, has long been characterised in masculine terms, but there has been little historical exploration of masculinity in a wider context. This interdisciplinary collection examines a diverse range of the multiple and changing forms of masculinities from the late eleventh to the late twentieth century, exploring the ways in which Scottish society through the ages defined expectations for men and their behaviour. How men reacted to those expectations is examined through sources such as documentary materials, medieval seals, romances, poetry, begging letters, police reports and court records, charity records, oral histories and personal correspondence. Focusing upon the wide range of activities and roles undertaken by men – work, fatherhood and play, violence and war, sex and commerce – the book also illustrates the range of masculinities that affected or were internalised by men. Together, the chapters illustrate some of the ways Scotland’s gender expectations have changed over the centuries and how, more generally, masculinities have informed the path of Scottish history

One of the most serious problems of modern medicine is sepsis. The number of patients undergoing this complication is 20–30 million (WHO) annually and has no tendency to decrease. Sepsis is characterized by severe multiple organ failure due to a violation of the response of the macroorganism to an infectious agent. Moreover, it is dangerous with high mortality. Sepsis often develops in patients with immunodeficiency conditions, which primarily include pregnant women. The article presents a clinical observation of a case of periostitis in a pregnant woman complicated by a septic state.
