The paper deals with the study results of the Hydrangea species reproduction by green and lignified cuttings based on the collection of the South-Ural Botanical Garden-Institute of the Ufa Federal Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The purpose of the work is to study the reproduction by cuttings of species and varieties of the genus Hydrangea and to identify optimal environmental conditions for the most effective result of cuttings. During the experiments green cuttings were rooted in 5 different types of substrates (sand, peat, a mixture of sand and peat, a mixture of sand and perlite, a mixture of peat and perlite). As rooting stimulants Kornevin and Heteroauxin were used. The reproduction of Hydrangea by lignified cuttings was studied after various storage methods during winter. It was found that the maximum rooting percentage is obtained when peat is used as a substrate (rooting reaches 96,7%). The maximum root-forming ability when reproduced by green cuttings using rooting stimulants (Kornevin and Heteroauxin) was observed in H. arborescens (86,6-93,3%) and its varieties (79,8-96,5%). High results were obtained when tree hydrangea was reproduced by both green and lignified cuttings. The root-forming ability of lignified cuttings increases when they are stored during winter under snow.

The paper presents characteristics of lilac flowering duration in the South-Ural Botanical Garden-Institute of Ufa Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. When selecting prospective species and sorts for landscaping purposes for each region, it is necessary to obtain a comprehensive assessment of decorative features. Lilac is now widely used in green building and is one of the most popular ornamental shrubs. The duration of flowering is one of the most important characteristics of ornamental plants and determines the decorative effect of the entire landscape composition. The paper presents the study results of the flowering duration of 11 species and 33 sorts of lilacs of the botanical garden collection for the last 7 years (2011-2017). The results obtained are shown in comparison with the data of earlier studies (2005-2009). The data analysis showed that in 2011-2017 the average lilac species flowering duration was 7-15, and that of varieties 13-15 days, which is 5-6 days shorter than the flowering period of the same taxa in 2005-2009. It is established that such a result is a consequence of changes in the climatic situation in the region. The obtained data on the lilac species flowering duration in Ufa, as well as the influence of climatic conditions on it, make it possible to successfully apply the studied species and varieties of lilacs for landscape design purposes in the Republic of Bashkortostan and adjacent territories.

The subject of this research is museum sources on the religion of Bashkir people. The goal lies in examination of the items of Islam and pre-Islamic beliefs from the ethnographic collections of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of R. G. Kuzeev Institute of Ethnological Research of the Ufa Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is determined that the Museum stores over 50 items related to religion that were collected in the late XX century in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Kurgan Oblast, and Orenburg Oblast. These Islamic (Sunni Muslims) items are rather associated with the traditions and lifestyle of the Bashkir people: prayer rugs – namazlik, Quran, tasbih, tagiyah, ablution items – kumgan, dress of the Mullah. Prayer rugs are decorated with floral embroidery, with images of mosque, kumgan, crescent moon, and Arabic inscription. The collections also feature the items related to Shia Muslims – a stone used in prayer. Islam first infiltrated Bashkir culture in the X – XI centuries; by the XIII – XIV century it spread significantly; strengthening its positions with each century, it has fully integrated into life of Bashkir population by the end of the XIX century. Despite this fact, certain items pre-Islamic beliefs have retained in everyday life of the Bashkir people: amulets (amulet stones, juniper, feathers of wood grouse, goose down, etc.). Bashkirs were able to synthesize the pre-Islamic and Islamic tradition, which remain existing harmoniously in the territory of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

Fruiting is an important characteristic of plant adaptation to new growing conditions. This is especially actual for ornamental plants, which, after successful introduction, can be used in landscaping of settlements. The genus Syringa L. has about 30 species, many of which can replenish the range of ornamental plants in the region. The collection of lilacs of the South Ural Botanical Garden-Institute of the UFIC RAS (Ufa Federal Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences) currently contains 11 species that have reached a generative state. The aim of this research is to identify the features of fruiting species of the genus Syringa during introduction in the conditions of the Bashkir Cis-Urals. The fruiting level of lilac species in the collection of the Botanical Garden was studied by determining the total number of fruits of the mother bushes. It is revealed that the fruiting level of introduced species of lilac is determined by the biological (hereditary) characteristics of the species and seasonal changes of weather conditions. S. velutina is characterized by the highest fruiting level, S. vulgaris and S. wolfii – by the lowest ones. It is assumed that there might be a tendency for dependence of the degree of fruiting on the quality of the formed pollen. Two taxa among all studied ones demonstrate fruiting level instability: S. reticulata ssp. reticulata blooms and bears fruit irregularly, while S. reticulata ssp. amurensis has regular abundant flowering, but there is a lack of fruiting in some years.

The article presents the results of the study of introduced varieties of dwarf bearded irises (Filippok, Deep Lavender, Bright White,CherryGarden, Clash, Well Suited, Banbury Ruffl es, Skip Stitch, Inscription, April Accent, Lace Caper, Double Lament) on the basis of the South-Ural Botanical Garden-Institute of Ufa Federal Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences. The main purpose of the study was to replenish the collection of the genus Iris with new varieties from the classes MDB (miniature dwarf bearded irises) and SDB (standard dwarf bearded irises), their introduction and selection of the most valuable varieties suitable for introduction into production, as well as for use in breeding. Seasonal rhythm of plants was studied by the method of phenological observations. The evaluation of ornamental features was carried out according to the generally accepted methodology, and also used the scale of comparative variety evaluation developed by theMainBotanical garden. As a result of the phenological observations there was revealed that the timing of fl owering all studied irises, except for the variety Skip Stitch, attributed to the early flowering – the beginning of fl owering is observed in May. The earliest onset of the fl owering phase was observed in the variety April Accent (May 21); at the latest – in the variety Skip Stitch (June 03). The duration of the fl owering phase ranged from 10 (Inscription) to 27 (Lace Caper) days. The life of the fl ower from disclosure to wilt averaged from four to six days. It was found that in the forest-steppe zone of the Bashkir Ural half of the studied varieties undergo a full cycle of development: they bloom and bear fruit, the remaining varieties are limited to fl owering. As result of the conducted evaluation of ornamentality, the studied irises received 90 or more points. The Clash and Well Suited varieties were characterized by highest ornamental qualities, which scored 98 points. On the basis of the conducted evaluation it was found that the studied varieties are adapted for cultivation in the forest-steppe zone of the Bashkir Ural.
