At present, the condition of surface water is much declining and the quality of water is a vital concern for mankind. It is directly linked with human security. Greater part of people is still not aware of it. So, improvement of the condition of surface water is a crying need. Surface water is often physically contaminated due to unhygienic practices. Discharges from various contaminated sources are very common thing in city life which deteriorates the water quality and necessary treatment is required to make water usable. The investigation is based on laboratory tests on water samples obtained from seven Ponds and three Charas of Sylhet City Corporation. The selected parameters for assessing the water quality are PH, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO). The present condition of Ponds and Charas water are not up to the mark and it is declining day by day. Proper initiatives need to take regarding the control of surface water pollution in Sylhet.

One can assess the quality of water by water quality index method and it is a mathematical method to evaluate the water quality based on physical or chemical parameters, using WQI one can evaluate the water quality of both ground water and surface water, while determining the WQI one can use the standards or guidelines provided by some standard organizations like WHO (world health organization), National Standard Body of India (BIS), ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research) etc. To assign grade to the water samples under study, apart from the WQI there are some other popular techniques used to evaluate water quality they are statistical methods, multivariate statistics, neural networks, fuzzy logic and machine learning algorithms. The aim of this study is to give insight into various methods used or developed to evaluate water quality of both ground and surface water by earlier research works.

Present communication deals with a study of Physico-chemical parameters such as pH, Temperature, Total Suspended Solids, Turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Nitrate and Phosphate in water samples of Channarayapatna, Janivara, Anekere and Baghur water bodies in Channarayapatna taluka, Karnataka state of India. The water quality of the samples was compared with standard values given by World Health Organization (WHO) and United State Salinity Laboratory for drinking and irrigation purposes. Water Quality Index (WQI) was also calculated to know the overall quality of water samples. Water quality index (WQI) of Surface water body of various Sampling locations of Channarayapatna taluka, Karnataka ranged between 61.82 and 68.27 indicates the fair quality of water. The water quality index is calculated by indicator (100-point scale) shows that water is suitable for drinking purposes only after pretreatment like filtering, boiling, reverse osmosis and electro dialysis. WQI can play a big role in justifying the water pollution problems after encountered in different surface water bodies. Application of Water Quality Index (WQI) in this study has been found useful in assessing the overall quality of water and to get rid of judgment on quality of the surface water.Int J Appl Sci Biotechnol, Vol 4(4): 475-482

This paper presents a study on assessment of water quality. According to a study, mining activities have a significant impact on water quality (lakes, surface water and groundwater), which has become a major problem globally. Due to mining and exploitation processes, lakes can be formed around these mines. Also, these lakes have been formed around the world and are steadily increasing. The purpose of this study is to watch the quality of water from the area around mining activities. This study refers to the, Groapa Burlacu lake around the mining exploitation Targu Ocna, Romania. This lake was formed on the northern bottle of the massive salt, strongly affected by the underground activities. Sampling for the determination the concentrations of Cl- and NaCl from the studied area was made at different depths (0 m, -5 m, -10 m, -15 m, -20 m, -25 m, -30 m, -35 m -40 m). Besides these concentrations, physical parameters of the water (pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen and temperature) were also measured. To determine the physical parameters in the monitored area, sampling was done from four different points of the area and then put together for analysis. These parameters were measured on site using portable equipment. The data on the analyzed concentrations indicate that at depths of less than 5.0 m, the NaCl concentration values are more than 250 g/L.

Factor analysis was conducted to explain the characteristics and variation in the quality of water during the disassembly of oyster frames and fishery boxes. The result shows that the most important latent factors in the Tapeng Lagoon are the ocean factor, the primary productivity factor, and the fishery pollution factor. Canonical discriminant analysis is applied to identify the source of pollution in neighbouring rivers outside the Tapeng Lagoon. The two constructed discriminant functions (CDFs) showed a marked contribution to all the discriminant variables, and that total nitrogen, algae, dissolved oxygen, and total phosphate combined in the nutrient effect factor. The recognition capacities in these two CDFs were 95.6% and 4.4%, respectively. The water quality in the Kaoping river most strongly affected the water quality in the Tapeng Lagoon. Disassembling the oyster frames and fishery boxes improved the water quality markedly. However, environmental topographic conditions indicate that strengthening stream pollution prevention and constructing another entrance to the ocean are the best approaches for improving the quality of water in the Tapeng Lagoon by reducing eutrophication. These approaches and results yield useful information concerning habitat recovery and water resource management.

Directive 2013/39/EU amending Directives 2000/60/EC and 2008/105/EC as regards priority substances in the field of water policy was adopted on 12 August 2013. It revises crucial rules on determining the chemical quality of surface water in Europe (e.g. identification of new harmful substances, updating of environmental quality standards, introduction of a new “watch list” mechanism) and establishes new standards for the protection of water in Europe. This paper explores the legal and factual background to the new legislation on protecting water quality in Europe and takes a critical look at its most important provisions.

The urbanization process through which large urban centers have been passing has drastically affected the availability and especially the quality of water. The Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed (CIW), located in the municipality of Guarulhos (State of São Paulo, Brazil), includes areas with different land use classes. This paper aims to correlate the spatial and temporal effects of land use and land cover on the water quality of the Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed. In a period of 12 months and at six sampling points along the watershed, the physicochemical parameters temperature (T), pH, turbidity (TU), total solids (TS), electrical conductivity (EC), total phosphorus (TP), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), as well as microbiological analysis (E. coli) were measured. Water quality was assessed using a modified version (WQIM) of the Water Quality Index (WQI) and the Trophic State Index (TSI). The areas surrounded by urban development presented a marked worsening in water quality, with the downstream point most affected and ranked as ‘POOR’. From the evaluated parameters, what contributed most to water quality degradation of the Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed (CIW) was E. coli, followed by BOD, and TP, all parameters related to the presence of sewage in the water. The need for the construction of sewerage and waste treatment, protection and recovery of riparian forests, and environmental education regarding waste disposal are necessary to significantly improve the environmental quality of the Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed.

Applicability of a widely accepted watershed-based water quality assessment tool (BASINS) and its associated watershed model (WinHSPF) was evaluated on the Seamangeum watershed in Korea. The study site is the largest polder project area in Korea and its environmental quality has been debated for the last five years. BASINS was found to be a convenient and powerful tool for assessment of watershed characteristics, and provided various tools to delineate the watershed into land segments and river reaches, reclassify land use, and parameterize for WinHSPF simulation. Calibration results were satisfactory showing model efficiency over 0.80 for stream flow, temperature, and dissolved oxygen simulation, and model output for water quality constituents also reasonably matched the observed data. It was demonstrated that calibration with dry-day data for a relatively long period might be adequate to simulate hydrologic characteristics and water quality of the watershed with WinHSPF, and using parameters generated with BASINS for nonpoint source pollution simulation is suggested when enough wet-day monitoring data are not available. The unit-area load of biochemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus was 27.8, 48.2, and 4.3 kg/ha/yr, respectively. These values are within the expected range but on the high side of the reported values, which implies that effective control measures are required to protect water quality of the downstream reservoir. Overall, BASINS/WinHSPF was applicable and found to be a powerful tool in pollutant loading estimation from the watershed, and its use in Korea is recommended.


Bangalore city consists of many artificial lakes which was constructed for domestic water supply, industrial, agricultural and also for recreational purposes. Due to huge population growth, pollution and urbanization the lakes of Bangalore is depleting day by day. Hebbal lake is one among the oldest lake in Bangalore, with its source being rainwater. Hence there is a need to study, restore and protect this lake. The present study deals with studying and analyzing the physicochemical parameters of Hebbal Lake at its different sampling points. The following parameters were analyzed in laboratory using different analytical methods i.e Temperature, Dissolved oxygen, Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Electrical conductivity, Total hardness, Total dissolved solids (TDS), and chloride. All other parameters were well within the permissible limits. The BOD exceeded the maximum limit as per the standards 6mg/lit prescribed by BIS. Water quality index was plotted to know its water quality fluctuations at different sampling points. The obtained results revealed the importance of lake restoration and management of the hebbal lake. It was concluded that the lake water could be used for domestic purpose, irrigation, and also for drinking purpose with proper filtration. This paper presents the qualitative assessment of hebbal lake and its remedial measures for water crisis in Bangalore city

Predictions of future events must be factored into decision-making. Predictions of water quality are critical to assist authorities in making operational, management, and strategic decisions to keep the quality of water supply monitored under specific criteria. Taking advantage of the good performance of long short-term memory (LSTM) deep neural networks in time-series prediction, the purpose of this paper is to develop and train a Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) Neural Network to predict water quality parameters in the Selangor River. The primary goal of this study is to predict five (5) water quality parameters in the Selangor River, namely Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Ammonia Nitrogen (NH3-N), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), pH, and Dissolved Oxygen (DO), using secondary data from different monitoring stations along the river basin. The accuracy of this method was then measured using RMSE as the forecast measure. The results show that by using the Power of Hydrogen (pH), the dataset yielded the lowest RMSE value, with a minimum of 0.2106 at station 004 and a maximum of 1.2587 at station 001. The results of the study indicate that the predicted values of the model and the actual values were in good agreement and revealed the future developing trend of water quality parameters, showing the feasibility and effectiveness of using LSTM deep neural networks to predict the quality of water parameters.

Analyzing of water quality at Ooty town and to provide clean and safe water. The water quality is analyzed and tabulated in this paper. So we are able to know the quality of water available in the sample taken. The water analyzed about the chemical, physical and biological characteristics of water. It is used to measure the appearance of sample water for the need of living. Water samples are collected from the open well (Latitude and longitude coordinates are 11.410000, 76.699997). The samples were tested for parameters like pH, turbidity, total hardness, fluoride, dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, acidity, and alkalinity. The values which are obtained from each parameter were compared with the Indian Standards: 10500 (Drinking water specifications). During the summer season the water demand is very high hence from the result the water was found to be safe for drinking.
