The hymen is a thin fold of mucous membrane; partially closing the external vaginal opening.1It is composed mainly of elastic, collagenous connective tissue and covered on its both surfaces by stratified squamous epithelium. At pregnancy, the epithelium of hymen becomes very thick and rich in glycogen, which may lead to spontaneous closure. We aim to report a rare case of spontaneous closure of hymen in a 23-year old primigravida in labour with no prior history of menstrual problems or problems during intercourse. Two conditions can cause the secondary closure of the hymen: following previous scarring and in pregnancy. In pregnancy, it could be spontaneous closure due to increase glycogen content of the hymen or due to extensive scarring as seen in previous hymenal surgeries. Spontaneous closure of hymen during pregnancy though very rare can occur. Along with extensive scarring, prolonged abstinence and oestrogenic effect on hymen, gonococcal infection can also cause sponatenous closure of hymen during pregnancy.

We report the first cesarean delivery in a woman with COVID-19 in a level III hospital in Portugal. It refers to a healthy woman with a term pregnancy that tested positive for COVID-19 on the day of labor induction. Given a Bishop score < 4 and the prior history of a cesarean section, the team decided to perform a surgical delivery. Appropriate personal protective equipment and safety circuits were employed, as described in more detail in the case report. Both the mother and the newborn are well. With this report we aimed to share our concerns, clinical management, maternal and neonatal outcomes, and to present our current circuits and adjustments regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in our maternity hospital.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the global spread of the disease (COVID-19) at present. Our understanding of the impact of the virus on the nervous system is limited. The involvement of CNS and neurological manifestations reports are further limited in obstetrical cases. We are reporting a case of an unusual presentation of COVID-19 infection in an admitted P2L2 postpartum woman who developed multiple episodes of seizures on postpartum day 8 of lower segment caesarean section, with no prior history of seizures or hypertension. This report will add to a rare neurological manifestation of COVID-19 in pregnancy.

Granulosa cell tumors are rare ovarian tumors that can arise during pregnancy. We present a new case of recurrent adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT) in pregnancy and a systematic review of the literature. The new case described is a 41-year-old woman G5P1122 with a prior history of AGCT that was referred to our center at 29 weeks because of a symptomatic abdominal mass, compatible with a possible recurrence of AGCT. At 36 + 3 weeks, she underwent a cesarean delivery for preterm labor and a total hysterectomy with a radical surgical staging. A healthy female infant was delivered. The patient received a platinum-based chemotherapy, with a 26-month follow-up negative for recurrence. Analyzing our case with the four identified by the literature review, three were recurrent and two were primary AGCT. Only one required surgery for AGCT at 15 weeks, while another underwent chemotherapy in pregnancy. In the other three cases, surgery for AGCT was done at the time of cesarean delivery. There were three cases of preterm delivery. All five pregnancies resulted in the birth of live babies with weight adequate for gestational age. In conclusion, AGCT diagnosed in pregnancy is rare, reported in only five cases. All gave birth to live babies in the third trimester, and maternal outcome at up to 18 months showed no recurrence.

Introduction: Pregnancy increases the risk of various psychiatric illness including depression. Such illness can result in prematurity, low birth weight and mother-child bonding. Depression is more common in women who have had negative experiences in previous pregnancies, have prior history of psychiatric disorder or are experiencing stressful life events. Unfortunately, psychiatric disorders among pregnant women are still undiagnosed and untreated, especially in developing country like Nepal. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence and correlates of depression in pregnancy. Material and Method: A cross-sectional, hospital based, descriptive study was conducted among 135 pregnant women attending Manipal Teaching Hospital’s antenatal clinic. Sociodemographic data and relevant clinical variables were collected using a predesigned proforma after obtaining informed written consent. The subjects were interviewed with Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI). For the assessment of correlates, regression analysis was carried out. All statistical analyses were done using SPSS v 20.0. P values < 0.05 were considered significant. Results: The prevalence of depression was 13.3 % according to BDI with additional 19% fulfilling criteria of mild mood disturbance. Factors such as history of sub fertility, pregnancy-induced illness and presence of domestic violence were found to be statistically significant predictors of depression during pregnancy. Conclusion: Depression can occur frequently among pregnant women. Certain factors can be identified, which further increase the risk of such mental illnesses. Thus, pregnant women who are at high risk such as with pregnancy induced illness, have history of sub fertility, exposed to domestic violence etc., must be identified and diagnosed so that they can be treated timely.

Aim: Evaluating the newborn passive immunization after maternal vaccination against SARS-COV-2. Case presentation: We present the case of a pregnant woman, with no prior history of COVID-19 infection, who got her second dose of mRNA vaccine against SARS-COV-2, 3 days before the start of her spontaneous labor. She was delivered by cesarean section after dynamical dystocia. Placental cord blood was retrieved immediately and sent to evaluate the titers of COVID-19 antibodies. Vaccine-generated antibodies were present in the umbilical cord with IgG spike >100 AU/ml. Conclusion: By reviewing the literature, vaccination seems to give hope about the potential protective effect of the maternal vaccination on her baby. Thus, pregnant women deserve a priority in the COVID-19 vaccination program.

Co-existence of multiple drug allergies and pregnancy often results in vexing dilemmas for physicians. A 21-year-old pregnant woman presented with asymptomatic cervicitis with dual infection with Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae during her third trimester. She reported a history of generalised rash with mucous membrane involvement following use of both macrolides and penicillins. Her gonococcal infection was successfully treated with a single dose of intramuscular gentamicin and chlamydial infection with oral clindamycin and rifampicin.

The stratified squamous epithelium which lines the ruminal compartment of the bovine stomach performs at least three important functions. (1) The upper keratinized layer forms a protective shield against the rough, fibrous, constantly moving ingesta. (2) It is an organ of absorption since a number of substances are absorbed directly through the epithelium. These include short chain fatty acids, potassium, sodium and chloride ions, water, and many others. (3) The cells of the deeper layers metabolize butyric acid and to a lesser extent propionic and acetic acids which are the fermentation products of rumen digestion. Because of the functional characteristics, this epithelium is important in the digestive process of ruminant species which convert large quantities of rough, fibrous feed into energy.Tissue used in this study was obtained by biopsy through a rumen fistula from clinically healthy, yearling holstein steers. The animals had been fed a typical diet of hay and grain and the ruminal papillae were fully developed. The tissue was immediately immersed in 1% osmium tetroxide buffered to a pH of 7.4 and fixed for 2 hrs. The tissue blocks were embedded in Vestapol-W, sectioned with a Porter-Blum microtome with glass knives and stained with lead hydroxide. The sections were studied with an RCA EMU 3F electron microscope.

The physiologic demands of pregnancy may either trigger or uncover ischemic heart disease (IHD) via largely unknown mechanisms, leading to an increased mortality compared with nonpregnant individuals. Risk factors for IHD in pregnancy are age, smoking, multiparity, and prior cardiac events. A multidisciplinary team at a referral center is key to coordinating medical or invasive management and inpatient observation. Etiologies may be revealed by experienced angiographers, and are predominantly spontaneous coronary artery dissection, followed by atherosclerotic disease and thrombus, while a significant percentage of women are found to have normal coronary arteries by angiogram. The management of these conditions is varied and, in general, conservative management is preferred with adequate coronary flow and stable hemodynamics. A woman with a history of IHD in pregnancy is at a substantial risk for further complications in future pregnancies and beyond; therefore, aggressive risk factor-reduction strategies and regular cardiology follow-up are imperative to decrease adverse events.
