Background: The experience of a mother of a child with a foreign body stuck in its nasal cavity can be quite panicky and horrifying. The nasal foreign bodies are one of the commonest emergencies in the department of otorhinolaryngology. The common foreign body objects that are removed from the nasal cavity includes beads, pencil butts, peas or other grains, seeds, sponge, stones, paper bits, erasers, metallic objects, crayons, batteries.Methods: An observational prospective study was performed at the department of otorhinolaryngology, government medical college, Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir. In this study we examined 120 cases of foreign body nose that had presented to us from March 2019 up to March 2020. Once detected a written consent was obtained from the patient’s attendants after duly explaining the involved risks to the child. Thereafter the foreign bodies were removed using appropriate instruments. Microsoft Excel tool were used to analyze and interpretate the data.Results: Amongst the 120 patients, there were 23 adults and 97 children under 10 years. Study included 72 males and 48 females. The 86 patients had a clear history of foreign body insertion. The 12 patients were brought to our OPD with history of a long standing unilateral nasal discharge. The 12 patients had presented with history of epistaxis. Eight patients had presented with headache and recurrent episodes of rhinorrhea. Two cases presented with symptoms of pain over the nasal bridge and swelling.  In our study 86% of the patients were brought with a history of foreign body insertion and only 14% a foreign body was detected when the child had presented to the outpatient department with nasal complaints. Amongst the patients 88 of them (74%) had presented with foreign bodies in their right nostril.Conclusions: Any history of insertion of a foreign body inside the nose should be thoroughly investigated. Appropriate clinical examination and diagnostic nasal endoscopy (wherever indicated) should be done. Appropriate instrument should be selected and used for foreign body removal.

In the urinary tract, foreign body is most commonly found in the urinary bladder. It is commonly self-inflicted but can rarely be introduced by other person. Various types of foreign bodies have been reported, which includes infusion set, aluminum rod, gold chain, pearl, fish, pencil etc. Here we report a case of a 28-year young man who gave the history of forceful introduction of a long wire of mobile charger into the bladder by another person. It could not be removed by himself and by the local doctors. Then he was referred to Enam Medical College & Hospital and subsequently was removed by suprapubic cystostomy. Background: The objective of the study was to study clinical presentation, mode of insertion, and management of intravesical foreign bodies in patients treated at our hospital.Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted between January 2018 to June 2019. Six patients underwent treatment for urinary bladder foreign body at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and Sion Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Medical records were analyzed retrospectively with regard to nature of foreign body, each patient’s clinical presentation, the mode of insertion and how the foreign was managed.Results: A total of six foreign bodies were retrieved from patients’ urinary bladders. The patients range in age from 28 to 65 years (mean age was 45 years). The Clinical presentation includes Lower urinary tract symptoms. Four patients were male and two were female. Circumstance of insertion was iatrogenic in 5 patients and self-insertion in 1 patient. Five patients were treated endoscopically (cystoscopy retrieval with or without cystolithotrity) and one patient with supra pubic cystostomy. Post-operative hospital stay was of 1 to 2 days. Mean follow up period was 3 months. Psychiatric referral and counseling were done in patients with history of self-insertion of foreign body in urinary bladder.Conclusions: Foreign body in the urinary bladder remain a challenge to the urologist. Removal of the foreign body without injury to the urinary bladder or the urethra gives good outcome.

To review our experience with inhaled laryngeal foreign bodies in children, we performed a retrospective review of all admissions to our institution between March 1989 and March 2002 with the diagnosis of an inhaled laryngeal foreign body. We included only cases in which the diagnosis was confirmed at endoscopy under general anesthesia. Two children were dead on arrival at our institution as a result of upper airway obstruction following a choking episode and did not undergo endoscopy; they were not included. Nine children (5 male, 4 female) were identified. The age range was 5 months to 13 years 9 months, although only 1 child was older than 32 months. The foreign body was removed within 24 hours of a witnessed choking episode in 4 children, and the diagnosis was delayed in 5 children for a period between 4 days and 2 months, including 2 in whom a history of a choking episode had been initially obtained. One complication occurred in a child in whom the diagnosis was delayed; he developed laryngeal edema after foreign body removal and required endotracheal intubation for 1 week.

Abstract Background Ingested foreign bodies are a common presentation to paediatric ENT services. Depending on the site, these are usually managed with flexible or rigid oesophagoscopy and retrieval. This paper presents a novel technique for removing a hollow foreign body that could not be removed using conventional means. Method and results After rigid and flexible approaches failed, a guidewire was passed through the foreign body under fluoroscopic guidance and a dilatation balloon passed through the lumen of the object. Inflating the balloon allowed dilatation of the inflamed mucosa above and below the object, facilitating straightforward removal under traction. Conclusion This is a novel and reproducible technique that uses equipment readily available in tertiary referral centres. Employed in this context, the technique enabled removal of an impacted object surrounded by granulation tissue, and would be appropriate for other objects with a lumen.

AbstractBackground:Removing a button battery from the ear can be a tricky and challenging procedure.Method and Results:We describe the innovative use of a magnetic telescopic rod to successfully remove a button battery from the ear canal of a nine-year-old boy.Conclusion:We propose that this equipment should be available in ENT clinics and operating theatres to be used for removing foreign bodies made from ferrous materials.

Airway foreign bodies are a leading cause of death among children and require urgent recognition by medical personnel. While most cases are diagnosed readily from a clinical history of acute respiratory distress, some cases remain more indolent and present later. We report the case of a 7-year-old boy who aspirated a “LEGO” toy and presented with a week history of increasing respiratory distress compatible with known asthma. Despite a normal chest X-ray, a low-dose computed tomography showed the presence of a foreign body in the left main bronchus, which was subsequently removed by fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Our case serves to reemphasize the importance of considering airway foreign bodies as a cause of respiratory distress, especially in young children.

As many as half of routine ill-patient visits in pediatrics practice involve respiratory symptoms. It is not surprising that we see so much coughing and wheezing when we consider that children are still developing immunologically and are, therefore, more susceptible to infection. In early life, most of these infectious diseases occur in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. In addition, the gradual exposure of the constitutionally allergic child to environmental allergens pre-disposes to the development of respiratory symptoms. Childhood is also a time for congenital defects of the cardiopulmonary system to become apparent. A sometimes overlooked cause of respiratory symptoms in infants and young children—and one that can become rapidly and severely complicated if misdiagnosed—is the aspiration of foreign bodies. Aspiration or ingestion of foreign bodies remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Children between 8 months and 4 years of age are at highest risk. Not all cases of aspiration are of the acute, obstructive variety, and pediatricians should consider a foreign body as a possible cause of coughing and wheezing even when no definite history of aspiration is obtained. Children of course are curious and their natural tendency is to reach out and explore new objects. Bringing objects to their mouths to taste and to test textures is common.

Two uncommon cases of foreign body (a wooden clothespin and a toothpick) perforation of the gut with associated pyogenic liver abscesses are presented. These cases illustrate the difficulties of preoperative diagnosis. The lack of history of ingestion of foreign bodies, variable clinical presentation of the conditions and radiolucent natures of the foreign bodies all play a role in impeding the diagnosis preoperatively. This report emphasizes the role of ultrasound and computed tomographic scan in evaluating similar cases. Any patient with known risk factors for ingestion of foreign body should arouse suspicion and be investigated further.

Abstract- Nasal foreign bodies are usually received in otolaryngology practice. Although more frequently seen in pediatric patients, also they can affect adults, specifically those with mental retardation or any psychiatric problems. We presented an unusual case of the nasal foreign body, an eraser rhinolith in a 17-year-old boy with mild mental retardation presented with long-lasting nasal obstruction but no chronic infection or epistaxis. Computed tomography revealed a peripherally calcified sub-mucosal round mass in the left nasal cavity. After surgery, a round shape foreign body that looked like an eraser piece was removed from the nasal cavity. Rhinolith can present just with nasal obstruction. With properly diagnosed and appropriate surgery, all rhinoliths can be removed and complication of extraction can be minimized

Abstract Background and Objective: Detection of radiolucent soft-tissue foreign bodies is a challenging problem, which is especially further complicated when retained foreign body is highly suggested by clinicians but radiography is negative. So, blind exploration is sometimes hazardous for patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of ultrasonography (USG) in detecting radiolucent soft-tissue foreign bodies in the extremities. Materials and Methods: From November 2011 to January 2012, patients with clinically suspected radiolucent soft-tissue foreign body and negative radiography were evaluated by USG with a 12-MHz linear array transducer. The patients with positive clinical and USG examination were included in our study and underwent exploration or USG removal. Results: Fifty-one patients underwent foreign body removal under ultrasonography-guided or surgical exploration and 47 patients had foreign body (31, 12, 3, and 1 case had thorn, wood, glass, and plastic, respectively). Ultrasound was positive in 50 patients. USG falsely predicted the presence of foreign body in four cases and was falsely negative in one of the cases. Accuracy, sensitivity, and positive predictive value were determined as 90.2%, 97.9%, and 92%, respectively. Conclusions: The real-time high-frequency USG is a highly sensitive and accurate tool for detecting and removing radiolucent foreign bodies which are difficult to be visualized by routine radiography.
