The studies on Rousseauist work seem to have said it all, yet an apparently innocuous fact has rekindled our curiosity and prompted us to take another reading of the Confessions by trying to grasp the vector of singularity in its multiple dimensions, which give the Confessions the status of constituent speeches within the meaning of D. Maingueneau. We will analyze our corpus through the procedures of discourse analysis, also using lexicometry. Our intention is not in analytical completeness but to decipher what from 1782 to the present day still arouses much passion and debate.

The aim of this paper is to comprehensively reconstruct the reception of postmodernism in Peter McLaren’s critical/radical pedagogy. On a more general level, the article discusses the pedagogical perils of uncriticalinfatuation with poststructuralist and postmodernist principles of dismantling grand metanarratives and debunking the notions of truth, totality, and universalism and replacing them with the notions of pluralism and perspectivism. The author seeks to verify the statement that McLaren’s response to postmodern developments in philosophy and social theory is in as much similar to that of Henry Giroux’s that it produces a project of education informed by postmodern ideas. The thesis – advanced in the mid 1990s by Tomasz Szkudlarek – is refuted on the basis of thorough a analysis of both earlier and more contemporary texts of McLaren where the main tenets of postmodern theory are severely criticized. The argument about the evolution of McLaren’s thought from a cautious appropriation of some elements of postmodernism to its downright condemnation is supported by the theory of its increasing radicalization under the influence of Marxism. The alternative to the illusory radicality of postmodernism – denounced as affirming the status-quo – is “pedagogy of revolution,” which emerges as strictly political, interventionist praxis whose aim is no longer discourse analysis but concrete social struggle against the oppressive capitalist class relations.

Abstract Debate over the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES) ranges over three quite different domains of enquiry. Protagonists are committed to substantive positions regarding (1) empirical questions concerning (for example) the properties and prevalence of systems of epigenetic inheritance; (2) historical characterizations of the modern synthesis; and (3) conceptual/philosophical matters concerning (among other things) the nature of evolutionary processes, and the relationship between selection and adaptation. With these different aspects of the debate in view, it is possible to demonstrate the range of cross-cutting positions on offer when well-informed evolutionists consider their stance on the EES. This overview of the multiple dimensions of debate also enables clarification of two philosophical elements of the EES debate, regarding the status of niche-construction and the role of selection in explaining adaptation. Finally, it points the way to a possible resolution of the EES debate, via a pragmatic approach to evolutionary enquiry.

This paper analyzes the textual aspects in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) Norman Fairclough model of CNN news discourse about Uyghur issue. When this research is conducted, there are only at least five articles specifically discussing Uyghur issue that are 29th December 2011, 29th February 2012, 29th February 2012, 30th October 2013, and 5th September 2014 publications. The research focuses on analyzing the text representation and the relation between participants in the discourse. Objectives of the paper are: 1) to analyze the text representation of news in the news channel of CNN related to the Uyghur case, and 2) to analyze the relation between participants in the news channel of CNN related to the Uyghur case. The subject of this paper is Uyghur issue as reflected in the news articles of CNN International. The paper applies qualitative descriptive method. As a consequence: CNN often put formality features and a vague vocabulary to block and obscure the negative value from the readers to China. The relation here is presented by CNN to China rather than CNN to Uyghur. It is reflected by the power of the status of China.

This paper reports on the findings of how the status of the audience affects the discourse of the writer in terms of the lexical choice and ideology. The data are elicited through a questionnaire that consists of (11) questions represent lexical choice and ideology. Analysis of the data suggests that there is a great support and satisfaction about the ideology of the editor more than some of the lexical choice questions. In addition, the editor was somewhat successful in reflecting what the audience thinks of. The study concludes with some implications and recommendations in the field of discourse analysis.

Aim: To describe practices related to body hygiene of children with encephalopathy at their homes. Method: This is a qualitative study using the creative-sensible method, with data generated from February to April 2014 through the dynamics “C orpo S aber”, and with five family groups of children assisted in the clinic of a cityhospital in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro; it was analyzed according to the French discourse analysis. Results: The body hygiene was contextualized by relatives in multiple dimensions, such as: the selection of the time for hygiene, location and necessary adaptations to perform the procedure, the affectionate dimension present during the bath, and the bath of child with gastrostomy. Discussion: For the relatives, body hygiene is presented as a complex care procedure, as it involves routines and adaptations related to the demand of children; however, it permitted to create moments of relaxation and play. Conclusion: The cultural traits of each family supported their caring practices, demonstrating the challenges created by the complexity of the care practice towards the demands of the children.

This paper demonstrates the concept of disaster resilience through the development and application of quantitative measures. As the idea of building disaster-resilient communities gains acceptance, new methods are needed that go beyond estimating monetary losses and that address the complex, multiple dimensions of resilience. These dimensions include technical, organizational, social, and economic facets. This paper first proposes resilience measures that relate expected losses in future disasters to a community's seismic performance objectives. It then demonstrates these measures in a case study of the Memphis, Tennessee, water delivery system. An existing earthquake loss estimation model provides a starting point for quantifying resilience. The analysis compares two seismic retrofit strategies and finds that only one improves community resilience over the status quo. However, it does not raise resilience to an adequate degree. The exercise demonstrates that the resilience framework can be valuable for guiding mitigation and preparedness efforts. However, to fully implement the concept, new research on resilience is needed that goes beyond loss estimation modeling.

Social worker‘s professional activity has been analysed from different viewpoints: the complexity of professional activity in the socio-cultural context of Lithuania is reflected by a complex character of clients' problems, multiple dimensions of the empowerment process, the novelty and the status of the profession in the community, public culture, etc. Social work is included in the list of risk professions, therefore, new and innovative ways of professional support are sought with the aim of professional risk prevention. One of them is supervision, or a professional relations counselling service. The service was first provided in the field of social work, which reflects the world tradition. The article aims to disclose the risk of professional stress in the social work process by actualizing the prospect of the use of supervision. The article presents an analysis of the data of the representative qualitative research. The research findings revealed that the process of social work was complex and full of surprises and tensions. Therefore, the line between good self-regulation skills and a burnout syndrome was unpredictable. The stages of planning, testing, and the review of the outcomes were identified as the most difficult, because they required reflection skills. Continuous improvement of self-regulation skills was necessary, which was the function of supervision as a form of professional competence improvement. Supervision cannot substitute for the support provided by one‘s colleagues, administration, the closest environment, or a priest, however, it can help to restore harmony, to reflect on one‘s professional experience, to name and to reconsider the stages of the process, to express the feelings experienced in the past and being experienced in the present, and to name the tensions arising between the professional and personal identities in the situation of intervention.

This article briefly reviews the rise of Critical Discourse Analysis and teases out a detailed analysis of the various critiques that have been levelled at CDA and its practitioners over the last twenty years, both by scholars working within the “critical” paradigm and by other critics. A range of criticisms are discussed which target the underlying premises, the analytical methodology and the disputed areas of reader response and the integration of contextual factors. Controversial issues such as the predominantly negative focus of much CDA scholarship, and the status of CDA as an emergent “intellectual orthodoxy”, are also reviewed. The conclusions offer a summary of the principal criticisms that emerge from this overview, and suggest some ways in which these problems could be attenuated.

Abstract: The present article aims to investigate memory functioning in the digital space departing from the original formulation We can do it! , which acquired the status of meme due to its repetition. To do so, we selected an analytical corpus composed of three memes that signified/signify the We can do it! formulation, producing sensory effects on the woman. Effects that provoke humor and irony, through the paraphrastic and polysemic processes of discourse, in the convergence between discursive memory and metallic memory, and which lead to resistance to machist discourses. We seek theoretical support in French Discourse Analysis, as proposed by Pêcheux (2014), in scholars like Courtine (2009), Orlandi (2015) and Indursky (2011), regarding discursive memory, and Orlandi (2006) and Dias (2016), when it comes to mettalic memory. Also, we understand the tension between paraphrase and polysemy, (ORLANDI, 2015), concepts dear to the materialist theory of the Discourse, as well as the discursive functioning of the memes in the digital space, texts composed by different significant materialities (LAGAZZY, 2009; 2011).

Keywords: Discourse; Digital space; Memes.
