A method is proposed for determining the mass of oil pollution per unit area of bottom sediments of water bodies, which makes it possible to associate pollution not only with the concentration of pollutants, but also with the area of the reservoir. The article uses the results obtained during the implementation of the project (No. 8.2.13.2020), within the framework of the Competitiveness Improvement Program of Tomsk State University.

The authors of the article draw the readers’ attention to the urgent problem that is the assessment of the pollution of bottom sediments of water bodies with hydrocarbons in the form of oil and oil products. When conducting surveys of water bodies, the determination of the content of oil or oil products in bottom sediments is expressed in grams per kilogram of precipitation in an air-dry state. Information in this form cannot be associated with the mass of oil at the bottom of the water body, what is very important when designing treatment works and calculating damage to aquatic biological resources. The method for determining the mass of oil pollution per unit area of bottom sediments of water bodies has been proposed and tested, what makes it possible to associate pollution not only with the concentration of pollutants, but also with the area of the reservoir.

Plot size has an important impact on variation among plots in agronomic field trials, but is rarely considered during the design process. Uniformity trials can inform a researcher about underlying variance, but are seldom used due to their laborious nature. The objective of this research was to describe variation in maize field trials among field plots of varying size and develop a tool to optimize field-trial design using uniformity-trial statistics. Six uniformity trials were conducted in 2015–2016 in conjunction with Iowa State University and WinField United. All six uniformity trials exhibited a negative asymptotic relationship between variance and plot size. Variance per unit area was reduced over 50% with plots 41.8 m2 in size and over 75% when using a plot size >111.5 m2 compared to a 13.9 m2 plot. Plot shape within a fixed plot size did not influence variance. The data illustrated fewer replicates were needed as plot size increased, since larger plots reduced variability. Use of a Shiny web application is demonstrated that allows a researcher to upload a yield map and consider uniformity-trial statistics to inform plot size and replicate decisions.

Nowhere in the world have tree improvement and silviculture had a bigger impact on forest productivity and value to landowners than in the southern US. The economic impact from almost 60 years of tree improvement in the southern United States has been staggering. For example, over 300,000 hectares are planted each year with seedlings from the breeding efforts with loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) by members and staff of the North Carolina State University Cooperative Tree Improvement Program. The present value of continued genetic gains from traditional tree improvement efforts is estimated to be $2.5 billion USD to landowners and citizens in the southern US.

The article deals with the problem of payments state university scholarships to students in question in the context of the principle of "equal access to education" and the concept of "free education." Now in Ukrainian universities there are students of two different categories: the so-called "budget students" who study for free and receive scholarship from the state, and the so-called "payers" who pay tuition fee and do not receive stipends from the state. This situation leads to decline of the scholarship’s role as a stimulator, and, as a result - to general decline of the efficiency of higher education. In this regard, methodological aspects of improving the efficiency of public scholarship funds allocated to higher education are discussed. In particular, the term "scholarship" is analyzed in the context of the value of public education as the institutional system. Unfortunately, we continue to understand this concept in the Soviet interpretation as cash payments for students who use it to meet their personal needs during training. At the same time, the world understood as non-cash aid to pay tuition fee.
