Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are still one of the main causes of death. In recent years, nanotechnology has offered new materials and strategies for more effective and safe treatment as well as diagnosis of CVDs. This review highlights the recent advances in nanotechnology applications in CVD therapy. The manipulation and the production of biomedical implantable devices based on nanomedicine approaches as well as drug delivery concepts for diagnosing and treatment of CVDs are discussed in this paper.

Hybrid materials based on Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles (MSN) have attracted plentiful attention due to the versatility of their chemistry, and the field of Drug Delivery Systems (DDS) is not an exception. MSN present desirable biocompatibility, high surface area values, and a well-studied surface reactivity for tailoring a vast diversity of chemical moieties. Particularly important for DDS applications is the use of external stimuli for drug release. In this context, light is an exceptional alternative due to its high degree of spatiotemporal precision and non-invasive character, and a large number of promising DDS based on photoswitchable properties of azobenzenes have been recently reported. This review covers the recent advances in design of DDS using light as an external stimulus mostly based on literature published within last years with an emphasis on usually overlooked underlying chemistry, photophysical properties, and supramolecular complexation of azobenzenes.

AbstractDue to the unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, much attention has been paid to the exploration and application of 2D materials. In this review, we focus on the application of 2D materials in mode-locked fiber lasers. We summarize the synthesis methods for 2D materials, fiber integration with 2D materials and 2D materials based saturable absorbers. We discuss the performance of the diverse mode-locked fiber lasers in the typical operating wavelength such as 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 μm. Finally, a summary and outlook of the further applications of the new materials in mode-locked fiber lasers are presented.
