The article deals with the problems of language learning within the educational universities. These theme is a major one, because it is important for English learners and moreover it is connected with other aspects of the language that can be linked with students’ awareness of the English language itself The essence of the issue is that the perfect acquisition of the language studied can be achieved only by learning the history of the language and the country studied as well as its relation to culture and people. The purpose of the article is to reveal a number of historical aspects of language learning, which include acquisition of material and awareness of historical background. The leading approach to the study of the problem is systematic.We suppose that it will facilitate shaping skills needed for cross-cultural communication. Any language is perceived as a social phenomenon, which comprises not only linguistic items, but also a combination of economic, behavioral and historical aspects. The materials of this paper can be recommended for use in modern practice of various educational institutions.

The ability to speak one language is considered insufficient for successful career development. It is believed that speaking more than one language can deliver economic growth of the country. Integration and globalization in education set new educational standards for future professionals. The study is relevant due to the significance of the English language in various spheres of activity. The development of the intercultural communicative competence is the main objective of educational institutions all over the world and international organizations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). English as an international language is considered by the author as a tool for cross-cultural communication. The main aim of the research work is to identify the concept of cross-cultural communication as a part of intercultural communication competence. The authors reveal potential challenges in language learning and give different approaches to successful language acquisition. The case study of the USA as one of the multi-ethnic countries in the world deserves examining. The system of education in the USA takes leading positions in the matter of modernization and reformation. Fundamental principals in English as a foreign language/ English as a second language learning reflect the well-organized system ensuring the development of tolerance, respect for the representatives of different ethnic groups, their cultures, beliefs and values, thus, providing efficient intercultural communication.

As an "atypical" historical film released in recent years, the film Forever Young gives up the usual grand narrative angle and pays attention to the small potatoes. It pieces together and links the hundred-year history of China's struggle and self-improvement through a "messy" and "broken" cross-narrative method and a consistent theme of "being true to yourself”. This paper analyzes the national and cosmopolitan elements reflected in the film and explores the acceptance in both domestic and foreign markets, indicating the weakness of contemporary Chinese films in the process of cross-cultural communication. It has been found out that the elements of nationalism are mainly embodied in three aspects, hundred years historical changes of China, oriental core values and oriental implicit artistic style and that the elements of cosmopolitanism are reflected in its narrative techniques, characterization and the theme.Based on the analysis of the weakness of  this film in cross-cultural communication, this paper suggests that it should avoid dealing with sensitive topics and obscure values for better cross-cultural communication effects.

In the framework of globalisation, the development of cross-cultural communication skills is of high interest. However, there is no due attention paid to the development of intercultural language competence in all universities as well as the possibility to share it directly with native interlocutors of the other culture. The objective of the article is to define the critical complexities in the area of cross-cultural communication among those who study a foreign language. Another objective is to elaborate recommendations that will enable the solution of the issues in the area of cross-cultural communication within up-to-date education. As a result, the researchers’ have organised and carried out the survey among 650 linguistic students of the 4th course from four largest Russian higher educational institutions (Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Higher School of Economics, Moscow State Institute of International Relations, and Moscow State University). The outcomes of the research  can be used in future as the basis for the development of cross-cultural communication for university students, which should have cross-cultural competence.

Technology-enhanced language learning has broadened the horizons of collaboration in the L2 classroom. At the same time, it has brought the cultural component closer, enriching the overall picture for students when learning a foreign language. This highlights the need for students to develop solid cross-cultural skills regarding the meaning negotiation processes underlying the discursive practices of their respective L2 communities. Only by acknowledging the referential, semiological nature of language and understanding cultural practices in situated terms may students be truly socialized in their L2. This study explores the perception of students regarding wiki-based collaborative writing as a resource in the L2 classroom while paying special attention to the treatment of culture specific elements that may hinder effective cross-cultural communication in their L2.

[Aim] The thesis is mainly about the great impact of cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning in web environment on students’ foreign language level, cultural awareness, affective factors, cooperation ability and independent ability. [Methods] We carry out practical activities of cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning by means of experimental teaching, video conference, E-mail inside and outside the class and giving priority to computer aided international cultural exchange form, as en elective course. [Result] Most students are positive about cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning under web environment in developing students’ cooperation ability, independent ability, affective factors and cultural awareness(M=4.059, SD=0.732). Subjects who are convinced to totally convinced that web learning environment greatly enhanced their cooperation ability and independent ability account for 92.4% and 78.2%; subjects who greatly approve that the web environment does good to learning account for 72.4%; students who agree the web environment could improve developing positive emotion in learning account for 88.8%; and also 84.1% of subjects believe that the web environment can improve their cultural awareness in language learning. [Conclusion] Cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning in web environment offer an ideal learning environment, increase opportunities to output or input, improve their cultural awareness in language learning, encourage and support affective factors beneficial to language learning and develop consciousness and ability of self-studying and cooperation.

In this article the author shares her experience on how to develop sociocultural competence by means of the literary and theatrical project on English classes. The Author´s need of appealing to the study of literature and theatreof the country which language is learned is caused by the nowadays increased necessity in cross-cultural communication and cooperation. The search for the solution led to the idea to organize the process of training English language on the basis of modern educational technologies allowing to improve educational process, to increase efficiency and quality of its organization. The method of projects became one of the primary ones. The author offers the creative project "Literary Drawing Room" with staging elements allowing to create the language environment, maintaining interest in studying of English and motivation for the new knowledge. The theatrical project became another integral part of the educational process organized by the author of this article. She refers to the prominent educatorswho proved the expediency of carrying out theatrical classes in general education process. The participation of the drama school headed by the author of this article in the International Theater Festivals in Russia and abroad, receiving Grants and recognition are a bright confirmation of the right choice of the literary and theatrical project as a way to polycultural personality formation prepared for cross-cultural communication.
