Abstract Due to the elasticity of the links in modern high speed mechanisms, increasing operating speeds often lead to undesirable vibrations, which may render a required accuracy unattainable or, even worse, lead to a failure of the whole process. The dynamic effects e.g. may lead to intolerable deviations from the reference path or even to the instability of the system. Instead of suppressing the vibration by a stiffer design, active control methods may greatly improve the system performance and lead the way to a reduction of the mechanism’s weight. We investigate a four-bar-linkage mechanism and show that by introducing an additional degree of freedom for a controlled actuator and providing a suitable control strategy, the dynamically induced inaccuracies can be substantially reduced. The modelling of the four-bar-linkage mechanism as a hybrid multi body system and the modelling of the complete system (including the actuator) is briefly explained. From the combined feedforward-feedback optimal control approach presented in (v. Stein, Ulbrich, 1998) a time-varying output control law is derived that leads to a very good system performance for this linear discrete time-varying system. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the applied control strategy.

Nowadays, most three-phase, “off the shelf” inverters use electrolytic capacitors at the DC bus to provide short term energy storage. However, this has a direct impact on inverter lifetime and the total cost of the photovoltaic system. This article proposes a novel control strategy called a 120° bus clamped PWM (120BCM). The 120BCM modulates the DC bus and uses a smaller DC bus capacitor value, which is typical for film capacitors. Hence, the inverter lifetime can be increased up to the operational lifetime of the photovoltaic panels. Thus, the total cost of ownership of the PV system will decrease significantly. Furthermore, the proposed 120BCM control strategy modulates only one phase current at a time by using only one leg to perform the modulation. As a result, switching losses are significantly reduced. The full system setup is designed and presented in this paper with some practical results.

A comparative study of the yearly performance of multistage solar collector systems, (comprised of more than one collector type) with a single on/off flow control strategy for all the collectors and separate on/off controls for each collector stage, is performed. Detailed numerical simulations under a range of climatic conditions showed that there is little advantage in using individual collector controls over a single on/off control strategy when the systems operate at low collector thresholds, but differences in system performance can be quite significant at high threshold values. In addition, the choice of the single control strategy (i.e., which collector the strategy is based on) at low thresholds is not critical in terms of system performance.


A reliable grid connected Photovoltaic (PV) system require effective control schemes for efficient use of solar energy. This paper presents a three-phase grid tied PV system with decoupled real and reactive power control to achieve desired power factor with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller to get maximum solar energy. The synchronous reference frame (dq) control along with decoupling concept is used to control the DC-AC inverter output, while the Phase Locked Loop (PLL) synchronization technique is used to monitor and synchronize the voltage and current at the grid side. The DC-DC converter with Incremental Conductance (InC) based MPPT model is also designed in this paper due to better accuracy compared to Perturb & Observe (P&O) algorithm. The simulation is performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK and a 31.5 kW PV system is modelled to get 30 kW power with the help of MPPT at Standard Test Conditions (STC). Any power factor value between 0.85 lagging to 0.9 leading can be obtained by changingreference q current in this inverter control strategy. The simulation results show that the change of reactive powerdoes not affecttheactive power values of the system, which verifies the effectiveness of the decoupled control strategy of the inverter.

In this, work the finite control set (FCS) model predictive direct current control strategy with constraints, is applied to drive three-phase induction motor (IM) using the well-known field-oriented control. As a modern algorithm approach of control, this kind of algorithm decides the suitable switching combination that brings the error between the desired command currents and the predicated currents, as low as possible, according to the process of optimization. The suggested algorithm simulates the constraints of maximum allowable current and the accepted deviation, between the desired command and actual currents. The new constraints produce an improvement in system performance, with the predefined error threshold. This can be applied by avoiding the switching combination that exceeds the limited values. The additional constraints are more suitable for loads that require minimum distortion in harmonic and offer protection from maximum allowable currents. This approach is valuable especially in electrical vehicle (EV) applications since its result offers more reliable system performance with low total harmonics distortion (THD), low motor torque ripple, and better speed tracking.
