Medicinal plants have been identified and used as primary sources in prevention and treatment of pulmonary diseases (mainly obstructive pulmonary diseases) from ancient times due to various pharmacological activities. In this review, the stimulatory effects of extracts, some fractions and constituents of medicinal plants on β2-adrenoceptors which could be used as possible therapeutic agents in the future were reviewed. Various databases including; Medline, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched using stimulatory effect, β2-adrenoceptors, possible mechanism, tracheal smooth muscle (TSM), medicinal plants and their constituents as keywords from 1985 to 2017. All studied plants including; Nigella sativa, Rosa damascena, Thymus vulgaris, Carum copticom, Carum carvi, Zataria multiflora, Crocus sativus, Cuminum cyminum, Liomnia acidissima, Portulaca oleraceae, Satureja hortensis, Ephedra sinica and Achillea millefolium showed relaxant effect on tracheal smooth muscle with a stimulatory effect on β2-adrenoceptors mechanism. The studied plants and their constituents could be of therapeutic value in clinical practice as a bronchodilatory drug by β2-adrenoceptors stimulatory mechanism for treatment of obstructive pulmonary diseases.

Abstract Today, the coronavirus epidemic, which caused the death of 79 million cases and 1743 thousand people in 218 countries around the world, continues to increase its impact all over the world. Researchers are still trying to develop an effective solution against covid-19, including vaccines and drugs. However, there are few studies that determine the effect of natural products obtained from plants on covid-19. Medicinal and aromatic plants have been used for therapeutic purposes since the existence of humanity. In this study, the effects of some important medicinal plants including Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Saffron (Crocus sativus L.), Nigella (Nigella sativa L.), Laurel (Lauris nobilis), Karabaş (Lavandula stoechas), and Zahter (Thymbra spicata L. var. Spicata) against Covid-19 were investigated in vitro conditions. The six plants were evaluated for cytotoxic effect on Vero cells and determining inhibition of viral replication in Vero-E6 cells at concentrations of broad-spectrum antiviral non-cytotoxic against Covid-19 in cell culture and an additional antiviral effect against Covid-19. According to the results, the five examined plants (Saffron, Nigella, Laurel, Karabaş, Zahter) were ineffective against Covid-19 in vitro conditions. Interisingly, the water extract obtained from the root of the licorice plant (Glycyrrhiza glabra) inhibited Covid-19 in vitro conditions in the 2nd dilution (1: 4) following the initial concentration in Vero-E6 cells.

Psychological complications appear to be significant disorders which need prolonged recovery period. They cause disability and impose hospitalized costs on patients. This systematic review was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of medicinal herbs on psychological indices in patients undergoing surgeries. The keywords such as anxiety, depression, aggressive, impulsive, stress, delirium and cognitive in combination with surgery and medicinal plants search terms such as medicinal plant or phyto or herb were used to search for relevant publications indexed in the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Scopus and PubMed using EndNote software. A total of 1231 studies with mentioned keywords were added to the bank of the study and after considering inclusion and exclusion criteria, 36 human studies were reviewed. Some medicinal plants such as Passiflora incarnata L., Valeriana officinalis L., Melissa officinalis L., Crocus sativus L., and Rosa damascena Mill. and some herbal formulas like Hochu-ekki-to and Yokukansan and also some phytochemicals such as ?-6 PUFA and Gastrodin reduce the psychological symptoms in several ways in the patients undergoing operation. Most of the clinical studies were carried out on aromatherapy and the others were based on oral administration. Taken together, using medicinal herbs in medical settings before and after surgery is an effective alternative way for alleviating some psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, aggressive and impulsive behavior, stress, delirium and cognitive dysfunction. However, the surgeons and anesthesiologists must be aware of their interaction and possible complications.

The use of plants or their isolated bioactive components for the prevention and treatment of various disorders has been developed. Here, we aim to identify effective medicinal plants for relief of cough and respiratory symptoms in children. The data of this review article were obtained from published articles in scientific databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, until December 2019. The keywords, including “Zataria multiflora Boiss.” OR “Portulaca oleracea L.” OR “Ferula assa-foetida L.” OR “Nigella sativa L.” AND “respiratory symptoms” OR “airway inflammation” OR “smooth muscle relaxant effects,” were searched individually or combined. The mentioned medicinal plants decreased total white blood cell (WBC), neutrophils, and eosinophils counts of blood and lung lavage in animal model-induced respiratory disorders. These plants also have protective effects on serum immunoglobulin, antibody titer, eosinophil count, and proinflammatory cytokines. Evidence from the studies indicated that the abovementioned medicinal plants have smooth muscle relaxant properties (bronchodilator effects) via stimulation of β-adrenoceptor or inhibition of muscarinic receptors (in vitro) and also improved the pulmonary function test in clinical settings. These medicinal plants are safe and easy to use. Based on the anti-inflammatory, anti-antispasmodic, and immunomodulatory effects, the clinical benefit may be assumed, therefore considering a place for these medicinal plants in relieve of chronic cough and symptoms of children’s allergy, asthma, and common cold.

Chronic pain can be periodic, persistent, or even a combination of both. Unlike acute pain, chronic pain is not usually useful, reduces the quality of life and functional abilities and also weakens mental health, interpersonal relationships, and financial status, leading to changes in appetite, sleep disorders, psychomotor retardation, tiredness and depression. Human being has always faced various kinds of pain during life and sought to relieve his pain. Pain is a sign of a disease that acts as a warning mechanism and informs of a tissue injury. In this regard, the analgesic effects of many medicinal plants have also been studied. Therefore, in this review study, indigenous medicinal plants with anti-chronic pain effects were reported. Information to conduct this review was obtained using the keywords chronic pain, herbal drug, Iran, medicinal plants, extracts and essential oils to retrieve articles indexed in databases such as Scopus, SID, Magiran, Google Scholar and other Persian databases. The related articles were reviewed for plants serving as chronic pain killers. After reviewing the literature, it was found that Solanum melongena, Hyoscyamus niger, Phoenix dactylifera, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Artemisia sieberi, Crocus sativus, Carum copticum, Euphorbia helioscopia, Hypericum perforatum, Cucurbita maxima, Passiflora caerulea, Rosa damascena, Tanacetum parthenium, Allium jesdianum and Pistacia atlantica among indigenous medicinal plants with analgesic effect.

Introduction: According to Rome IV, functional dyspepsia is diagnosed with presence of dyspepsia in the absence of organic or metabolic causes. FD caused by several factors such as impaired gastric accommodation and hypersensitivity to gastric distention. Several studies have reported effectiveness of herbal medicine on FD. This article, thus, reviews Persian herbal medicine in FD. Method: Electronic databases including Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrain, Embase, Web of science and Ovid were searched so as to find clinical articles related to dyspepsia and herbal medicine by July 2019. Our search strategies were traditional medicine, complementary and alternative medicine, herb, plant, and dyspepsia. We excluded all articles except Persian clinical trials. Results: We found 34 clinical trials with 15 herbs and 4 compound herbal remedies like Asparagus racemosus, Brassica oleracea, Cynara scolymus, Ocimum basilicum, Mentha longifolia, Mentha pulegium, Mentha piperata, Pimpinella anisum, Nigella sativa, Mastic gum, Curcuma longa, Pistatio atlantica, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Solanum tuberosum and Zingiber officinale and compound remedies of Rosa damascene & Crocus sativus, Trachyspermum copticom & Apium graveolence, Carum carvi & Mentha pipperata, Gingiber officinalis & Cynara scolymus are effective in functional dyspepsia. Conclusion: Many people use herbal and traditional remedies for treatment of disorders such as gastrointestinal disordersو , especially in Asian countries. Several studies reported the efficacy of herbal medicine in functional dyspepsia. Although their mechanisms are not fully understood, it seems they can modulate GI motility and improve symptoms of FD.
