Background: Jelly based desserts are very popular among millions of people worldwide. The main gel forming ingredient used in these products is ‘Gelatin’, which is a complex polysaccharide in their chemical structure. This research study focusses on incorporation of fruit pieces in to the dessert jelly in order to give a novel experience to the consumers. Methods: To determine the best way of incorporating fruit pieces in a commercially available jelly mixture (which is made up of fruit flavour, acid, water, sugar and pectin as the jelling agent), fruit pieces were treated in two ways and compared for the best textural and sensory qualities. First sample constituted unblanched, oven dried fruit pieces in a commercially available jelly mixture and its was compared with a jelly sample with blanched (fruit pieces were pretreated to minimize any possible discolorations and textural changes), osmo air dehydrated and oven dried fruit pieces. Sensory qualities such as texture, mouth feel and flavour of two different samples were gauged through a sensory test. Result: From a sensory test carries out by a panel of 09 sensory panelists it was found that the jelly mixture when incorporated with osmo air dehydrate fruit pieces it did not degrade the texture of the final product as opposed to unblanched dried fruit pieces does. The osmo air dehydrated fruit pieces in the prepared jelly has a texture and an acceptable mouth feel which is closer in texturally to the natural mouth feel and the taste, when they are reconstituted inside the jelly mixture by absorbing the water from the mixture.

Deanship of scientific research established by the King Abdulaziz University provides some research programs for its staff and researchers and encourages them to submit proposals in this regard. Distinct research study (DRS) is one of these programs. It is available all the year and the King Abdulaziz University (KAU) staff can submit more than one proposal at the same time up to three proposals. The rules of the DSR program are simple and easy so it contributes in increasing the international rank of KAU. The authors are offered financial and moral reward after publishing articles from these proposals in Thomson-ISI journals. In this paper, multiplayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network (ANN) is employed to determine the factors that have more effect on the number of ISI published articles. The proposed study used real data of the finished projects from 2011 to April 2019.

Background: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a common reagent in the production and living, but excessive H2O2 may enhance the danger to the human body. Consequently, it is very important to develop economical, fast and accurate techniques for detecting H2O2. Methods: A simple two-step electrodeposition process was applied to synthesize Pd-Cu/Cu2O nanocomposite for non-enzymatic H2O2 sensor. Cu/Cu2O nanomaterial was firstly electrodeposited on FTO by potential oscillation technique, and then Pd nanoparticles were electrodeposited on Cu/Cu2O nanomaterial by cyclic voltammetry. The chemical structure, component, and morphology of the synthesized Pd-Cu/Cu2O nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of Pd-Cu/Cu2O nanocomposite were studied by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry. Results: Under optimal conditions, the as-fabricated sensor displayed a broad linear range (5-4000 µM) and low detection limit (1.8 µM) for the determination of H2O2. The proposed sensor showed good selectivity and reproducibility. Meanwhile, the proposed sensor has been successfully applied to detect H2O2 in milk. Conclusion: The Pd-Cu/Cu2O/FTO biosensor exhibits excellent electrochemical activity for H2O2 reduction, which has great potential application in the field of food safety.

Objective: Determination of the clinical effectiveness of ciprofloxacin versus ceftriaxone in children with enteric fever on the basis of defervescence within 72 hours of commencement of treatment. Duration and Place of Study: This randomized controlled trial was carried out from 15th May to 15th November 2017 in pediatrics units of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Teaching Hospital Abbottabad and Jinnah International Hospital Abbottabad. Methodology: 90 children with uncomplicated enteric fever were admitted and divided randomly into two groups, Group A was administered I/V Ceftriaxone 75mg/kg OD and Group B was given I/V Ciprofloxacin 10mg/kg BD for seven days. Response to drug was taken as defervescence within 72 hours while continued fever after 72 hours was taken as no response. The data was analyzed by using SPSS Version 21.00. Results: In our research study 53(58.9%) children were male and 37(41.1%) patients were female. The mean age was 8.43±3.17 years encompassing 4 to 14 years, mean weight of the patients in kg was 29.54±10.8 kg. Efficacy of ceftriaxone group was 93.3% while in ciprofloxacin group 62.2% patients became afebrile in 72 hours. The proportion of achieving defervescence within 72 hours was higher with ceftriaxone than with ciprofloxacin Conclusion: Ceftriaxone is more efficacious in terms of achieving defervescence than ciprofloxacin in children having enteric fever.

Abstract Data were gathered, during a study on the development of an automated system for the extraction, cleanup, and quantitation of mycotoxins in corn, to determine if it was scientifically sound to reduce the analytical sample size. Five, 10, and 25 g test portions were analyzed and statistically compared with 50 g test portions of the same composites for aflatoxin concentration variance. Statistical tests used to determine whether the 10 and 50 g sample sizes differed significantly showed a satisfactory observed variance ratio (Fobs) of 2.03 for computations of pooled standard deviations; paired f-test values of 0.952, 1.43, and 0.224 were computed for each of the 3 study samples. The results meet acceptable limits, since each sample’s r-test result is less than the published value of the |t|, which is 1.6909 for the test conditions. The null hypothesis is retained since the sample sizes do not give significantly different values for the mean analyte concentration. The percent coefficients of variation (CVs) for all samples tested were within the expected range. In addition, the variance due to sample mixing was evaluated using radioisotopelabeled materials, yielding an acceptable CV of 22.2%. The variance due to the assay procedure was also evaluated and showed an aflatoxin B, recovery of 78.9% and a CV of 11.4%. Results support the original premise that a sufficiently ground and blended sample would produce an analyte variance for a 10 g sample that was statistically comparable with that for a 50 g sample.

Diclofenac (DCF) is one of the most detected pharmaceuticals in environmental water matrices and is known to be recalcitrant to conventional wastewater treatment plants. In this study, degradation of DCF was performed in water by photolysis and photocatalysis using a new synthetized photocatalyst based on hydroxyapatite and TiO2 (HApTi). A degradation of 95% of the target compound was achieved in 24 h by a photocatalytic treatment employing the HApTi catalyst in comparison to only 60% removal by the photolytic process. The investigation of photo-transformation products was performed by means of UPLC-QTOF/MS/MS, and for 14 detected compounds in samples collected during treatment with HApTi, the chemical structure was proposed. The determination of transformation product (TP) toxicity was performed by using different assays: Daphnia magna acute toxicity test, Toxi-ChromoTest, and Lactuca sativa and Solanum lycopersicum germination inhibition test. Overall, the toxicity of the samples obtained from the photocatalytic experiment with HApTi decreased at the end of the treatment, showing the potential applicability of the catalyst for the removal of diclofenac and the detoxification of water matrices.

PurposeThe aim of the article is to analyze the process of creating spatial value. The object of the analysis concerns the riverside areas of the city of Poznan. The study focuses on spontaneous practices that are outside the legal regulations, thanks to less-visited places which have gained popularity among residents and disciplinary techniques introduced by government officials in response to such activities.Design/methodology/approachAt the theoretical level, the study is primarily based on Florian Znaniecki's spatial value concept and Michel Foucault's concept of power. The empirical research study includes quantitative (questionnaire-based interviews) and qualitative methods (expert interviews and content analysis).FindingsIdentification of the method of creating spatial value which does not require direct financial outlays; determination of disciplinary techniques used by government officials ultimately led to a reduction in the spatial value.Originality/valueThe article reveals the hidden mechanisms of functioning of the authority that defends itself against the reduction of its powers. It is an alternate way of analyzing and interpreting organizational changes in urban space to the one promoted by the Poznan authorities. The results can be used in various ways. Researchers representing the critical trend of urban research can interpret the process of creating spatial value by residents in terms of community, resistance and alternates to the actions of the authorities. From this point of view, the research study is interventional and exposing in nature. On the other hand, for city decision makers allowing the possibility to consume alcohol in a given area can be an effective, low-cost way of revitalizing it. Research can also be useful in assessing the effectiveness of particular disciplinary techniques by public officers.
