If design management is worldwide institutionalized especially in developed economies, little is known about African design even though the continent is becoming an attractive economy thanks to his exponential growth and more political stability. Oriented toward one specific country: Morocco, this study through a questioning embedded in institutional theory brings an overview about design in a specific context. This research captures design management emergence in Morocco by spotting the light on the state of design institutionalization toward the creation of design value.

Secondary channels present a favourable opportunity for ecological restoration of the River Rhine and its branches. However, they have to be fitted into the landscape without affecting existing interests such as inland shipping and protection against flooding. Also the ecological targets have to be met with a minimum of human interference. In this article some design principles for secondary channels are presented in which these aspects are taken into account. To avoid silting up of the secondary channel it is recommended to prevent sediment from entering the channel at all. Flow velocities have to be below the threshold value for initiation of motion of sediment, but still high enough to satisfy the ecological targets. The secondary channel discharge is a function of the maximum allowable aggradation of the main channel. Discharge and flow velocities together determine the required cross-sectional area and thus the design value of the bank slopes. In order to have flowing water in the secondary channel all year round, the thalweg level is to be chosen on the basis of the water level frequency curve of the main channel.

An ocean-based, 1-MWe (gross) test plant has been planned to establish the feasibility of OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) power generation in the revised Sunshine Project. The preliminary design of the proposed test plant employs a closed-cycle power system using ammonia as the working fluid on a barge-type platform with a rigid-arm-type, detachable, single-buoy mooring system. Two types each of titanium evaporators and condensers are to be included. The steel, cold-water pipe is suspended from the buoy. The design value of the ocean temperature difference is 20 K. The paper presents an overview of the preliminary design of the test plant and the tests to be conducted.

In this study, Larix gemilinii and metal plate were selected as the main materials. According to GB5005-2003, the connection properties of tension-splice joint and larch wood were investigated. The results showed that the elastic modulus of Larix gemilinii was not affected by the performance parameters of tension-splice joint greatly and three kinds of failure modes were introduced. Besides the design value for the ultimate bearing capacity of Larix gemilinii and the design value for the ultimate tensile bearing capacity of the metal plates were determined. A conservative calculation method for ductility ratio of metal plates was proposed. The ductility ratio of the metal plate connected joint changed with the construction modes, and the ductility ratio for metal plate parallel to the grain (more than 2.4) was obviously bigger than that of perpendicular to the grain, which complies with the requirements for ductility ratio in anti-seismic structure.

An experimental investigation has been conducted into the feasibility of increasing blade spacing (pitch) at constant chord in a linear turbine cascade. Vortex generator jets (VGJs) located on the suction surface of each blade in the cascade are employed to maintain attached boundary layers despite the increasing tendency to separate due to the increased uncovered turning. Tests were performed at low Mach numbers and at blade Reynolds numbers between 25,000 and 75,000 (based on axial chord and inlet velocity). The vortex generator jets (30 degree injection angle and 90 degree skew angle) were operated with steady flow with momentum blowing ratios between zero and five, and from two spanwise rows of holes located at 45% and 63% axial chord. In the absence of control, pitch-averaged wake losses increase up to 600% as the blade pitch is increased from its design value to twice the design value. With the application of VGJs, these losses were driven down to or below the losses at the design pitch. The effectiveness of VGJs was found to increase modestly with increasing Reynolds number up to the highest value tested, Re = 75,000. The fluid phenomenon responsible for this remarkable range of effectiveness is clearly more than a simple boundary layer transition effect, as boundary layer trips installed on the same blades without VGJ blowing had no beneficial effect on blade losses. Also, tests conducted at elevated levels of freestream turbulence (4% at the cascade inlet) where the suction surface boundary layer is generally turbulent, showed wake loss reduction comparable to tests conducted at the nominal 1% freestream turbulence. For all configurations, blowing from the upstream row had the greatest wake influence. These findings open the possibility that future LPT designs could take advantage of active separation control using integrated VGJs to reduce the turbine part count and stage weight without significant increase in pressure losses.

Industrial pumps are generally used in a wide range of operating conditions from almost zero mass flow to mass flows larger than the design value. It has been often noted that the head-mass flow characteristic, at constant speed, presents a negative bump as the mass flow is somewhat smaller than the design mass flows. Flow and mechanical instabilities appear, which are unsafe for the facility. An experimental study has been undertaken in order to analyze and if possible to palliate these difficulties. A detailed flow analyzis has shown strong three dimensional effects and flow separations. From this better knowledge of the flow field, a particular device was designed and a strong attenuation of the negative bump was obtained.

Proposal for improved mixes to produce concrete masonry units with commonly used aggregates available in the Valley of MexicoABSTRACTIn this paper, a proposal is done to update the masonry index compressive strength design value f*m for solid concrete masonry units for the masonry guidelines of Mexico´s Federal District Code (NTCM-2004). Solid units were made by taking into account the characteristics of the most commonly used raw materials available in the Valley of Mexico to fabricate such units in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City. Different tests were conducted for both raw materials and the obtained concrete units. This paper explains the need for a guidance manual for loading Great Lakes bulk carriers. The guidance manual is concerned with limiting the stillwater bending moment to the design value. Topics covered herein are the effect of stillwater bending moment on deflection, historical stillwater bending moment as a function of ship parameters, light ship weight distribution, and items commonly included in the guidance manual.
