Structural racism is a multilevel system of ideologies, institutions, and processes that have created and reified racial/ethnic ineq­uities. As a system, it works in concert across institutions to propagate racial injustice. Thus, efforts to address structural racism and its implications for health inequity require transdisciplinary collaboration. In this article, we begin by describing the process through which we have leveraged our discipline-specific training -- spanning edu­cation, epidemiology, social work, sociology, and urban planning -- to co-construct a transdisciplinary analysis of the determinants of racial health inequity. Specifically, we introduce the underlying theories that guide our framework development and dem­onstrate the application of our integrated framework through a case example. A content analysis of 486 syllabi from 110 baccalaureate social work programs was conducted to assess the extent of minority content in undergraduate social work curricula. Programs were requested to submit syllabi for required courses in the Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Research, and Policy foundation areas, as well as courses specifically focusing on minority groups. Findings indicate that content on women and women's issues is highly integrated across the curriculum, but content on racial/ethnic minorities does not appear to be as integrated into the curriculum. In particular, scant attention is being paid to minorities in the Research foundation.

The book concludes with a summary of its main contributions. This workplace ethnography provides the reader with a gendered account of the racial dynamics in multiracial schools and finds that there are larger racial/ethnic stereotypes and hierarchies that emerge among racial/ethnic minority groups in the white-collar world and professions. The Conclusion explains that Latina teachers heavily guard Latino culture in schools and become ethnic mobility agents to deflect racism against their Latino students, but there is a cost to some students, especially African American children and those Latino students who do not fit the mold of deserving aid. While structural racism influences their jobs, culture is a vehicle to promote educational success. It describes whether Chicana/Latina cultural pedagogies can be learned and implemented by non-Latina teachers and ends with a discussion of the possible negative repercussions of Chicana/Latina cultural pedagogies in multiethnic metropolitan regions across the nation as Latino families settle in new immigrant gateways. It also provides policy implications for educational reform for students who attend schools in multiracial spaces.

AbstractLoss and damage from climate change, recognized as a unique research and policy domain through the Warsaw International Mechanism (WIM) in 2013, has drawn increasing attention among climate scientists and policy makers. Labelled by some as the “third pillar” of the international climate regime—along with mitigation and adaptation—it has been suggested that loss and damage has the potential to catalyze important synergies with other international agendas, particularly sustainable development. However, the specific approaches to sustainable development that inform loss and damage research and how these approaches influence research outcomes and policy recommendations remain largely unexplored. We offer a systematic analysis of the assumptions of sustainable development that underpins loss and damage scholarship through a comprehensive review of peer-reviewed research on loss and damage. We demonstrate that the use of specific metrics, decision criteria, and policy prescriptions by loss and damage researchers and practitioners implies an unwitting adherence to different underlying theories of sustainable development, which in turn impact how loss and damage is conceptualized and applied. In addition to research and policy implications, our review suggests that assumptions about the aims of sustainable development determine how loss and damage is conceptualized, measured, and governed, and the human development approach currently represents the most advanced perspective on sustainable development and thus loss and damage. This review supports sustainable development as a coherent, comprehensive, and integrative framework for guiding further conceptual and empirical development of loss and damage scholarship.

The escalation of discourse on racial injustice prompts novel ideas to address the persistent lack of racial equity in LIS research. The underrepresentation of BIPOC perspectives contributes to the inequity. Applying the Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach meaningfully engages BIPOC to help guide LIS investigations that identify evolving needs and concerns, such as how systematic racism may contribute to social justice issues like environmental and health inequity. Engaging with BIPOC, using the CBPR approach, can help address racial equity in LIS because it will result in increased racial representation which enables incorporation of the perspectives and priorities of BIPOC. This shift to greater engagement is imperative to respond to escalating attention to social injustice and ensure that these central issues are adequately reflected in LIS research. The discipline is positioned to help detail the drivers and implications of inequity and develop ways to address them. We underscore the importance of working across research disciplines by describing our CBPR experience engaging with BIPOC in LIS research. We highlight the perspectives of community partners who have over two decades of experience with community-based LIS research. We offer lessons learned to LIS researchers by describing the factors that make these initiatives successful and those which contribute to setbacks.

This article presents a multidimensional model of psychosocial determinants of health behavior for health promotion research and policy analysis. Frequently, health promotion focuses almost exclusively on intrapsychic determinants and on individual level behavior. Based upon Field Theory and attitude theories, this proposed model holds that in populations with comparable sociodemographic and biological status (exogenous variables) a health behavior is a function of direct and interaction effects of five key intrapsychic and external variables. These are: behavioral intentions, social support, accessibility of means for action, personal autonomy, and action situation. Empirical tests with cross-cultural studies in Venezuela, Kenya, and the Philippines provide substantial support for the model. The findings suggest that while health promotion strategies should deal with intrapsychic determinants of behavior, key extrapsychic factors (such as social support, quality and accessibility of health care measures, and situational factors) all have direct and independent effects on health behavior as well. Health promotion research and interventions which aim exclusively at intrapsychic determinants would thus have rather limited overall value. The article discusses key research and policy implications of the model presented.
