Engineering is a complex field of study.  Declining enrollment in engineering programs in the United States is of concern and understanding the various factors that contribute to this decline is in order.   Fostering a higher level of student engagement with the content may foster passion towards engineering which could increase academic competency as well as sustained interest in remaining in the profession.  This study examined the role of passion toward engineering content on students’ overall academic performance in an introductory course taught to university and high school students.  A pre-test, post-test, weekly surveys and periodic classroom observation measured levels of passion in the student, classmates, and professor. Mid-semester feedback prompted the professor to adjust his teaching for the purpose of infusing greater student passion towards the content. Results suggest that student passion in both settings fluctuated widely from week to week perhaps due to variable interest in the specific topic.  Overall, high school students’ level of passion remained more stable than that of university students and they performed better academically. Among university students, higher passion was not linked to higher academic performance.  Professor’s passion was highly valued by students though it did not increase their own passion.

The determinants of students’ academic performance caught the attention of many scholars for many years now. Among other factors, self-efficacy proved to be an important predictor of academic performance. In an educational context, self-efficacy refers to students’ expectations about their ability to complete academic tasks successfully. Learners, who are unsure of their ability to complete the task, often give up when they encounter difficulties. This study tested the relationship between self-efficacy and academic performances in Algebra among first-year private non-sectarian high school students. The research design was descriptive- correlation survey method that utilizes a modified tool in Algebra self-efficacy scale in order to gather data from 163 first-year students from different high schools in Davao City. The academic performance measured in this study was based on students’ third-quarter grades. Data were treated using Mean and Pearson Product - Moment Coefficient of Correlation. The results of the study indicated that the level of students’ self–efficacy on Motivational Strategies, Cognitive Strategies, Resource Management, and Self-Regulated Learning is high. Furthermore, students’ level on academic performance in Algebra is satisfactory. Self-efficacy was not significantly related to academic performance in Algebra. The study recommends using a standardized test in algebra to measure students’ academic performance and with a bigger sample proportionate to the population of each school.Keywords— Mathematics Education, self–efficacy, academic performance, algebra, first year students, private non-sectarian, descriptive-correlational design, Davao City, Philippines

Effective Use

The purpose of this book chapter is to illustrate the effective use of online learning design in project management for a fully accredited online high school. This online high school was developed through a partnership of a national-accredited online K-12 educational institution and a prominent university located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Within the high school, a course was created to measure the value of this online high school experience through the focal lens of its main stakeholders, the online high school students. The authors discuss the implementation and management that was used for the design of that online course. Drawing on a description of an online preparatory course and survey data from 3 participants, the objectives of this chapter are to highlight mission and goals of the online high school and the advantages/disadvantages of attending a synchronous online high school (Quillen, 2010). Findings illustrate the labor intensive commencement of an online high school through its first year.

This study entitled “Enhancing Academic Performance in English of Bilaran National High School through a Self-Developed Mobile Quiz Game Application” aimed to improve the academic performance in English of Bilaran National High School students through a Self-Developed Mobile Quiz Game Application. Currently, it is a problem of Bilaran National High School, especially in English, that students have problems academically such as in retention. The experimental type of research was utilized by the researcher in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the aforementioned mobile quiz game app.After the experiment, the computed t-value of 9.72 which is higher than the critical value of 1.99 set at 0.05 level of significance revealed that there was a significant difference between the post-test results of the control and experimental groups. Thus, it is found out that the Self-Developed Mobile Quiz Game Application is effective in teaching English, both grammar and literary terms. This research may serve as reference to teacher in providing innovations and reinforcement activities that would enhance the learners’ knowledge.

This paper reports an analysis of an integrated data set that longitudinally tracked over 14,000 students from Canada’s largest school board (the Toronto District School Board [TDSB]) into Canada’s largest university (the University of Toronto [UofT]). Our analysis showed that when controlling for high school academic records and other student demographics, immigrant students from TDSB were more likely to pursue engineering than other fields of study; math ability was a strong predictor for the TDSB-UofT Engineering pathway; and while engineering students had better academic outcomes than other students, they had lower CGPAs than would be predicted by their academic performance in high school. These findings reveal three characteristics of UofT Engineering: its selectivity and rigor, transnational character of its student population, and complex student diversity. The study also suggests UofT Engineering look into its grading practices.

The Relationship

The increasing use of smartphone among young people is creating negative effects and is an important public health problem in many countries. Smartphone abuse and addiction may cause physical and psychological disorders among users. However, the awarenes on this issue has been inadequate due to lacking of evidence. Objectives: To describe the current situation of smartphone using among students at highschools and universities in Hue city and to examine the relationship between smartphone using and sleep disturbances and psychological disstress among participants. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a randomly selected sample of 1,150 students at highschools and universities in Hue city. SAS-SV scale was used to evaluate phone addiction status, K10 scale was used for psychological distress assessment and PSQI scale was used to examine the sleep quality. Results: The proportion of students at highschools and universities having smartphones was 78.0%. The rate of smartphone addiction among high school students was 49.1% and that among university students was 43.7%. There was 57.3% of high school students had poor sleep quality, and that of university students was 51.6%. There was a statistically significant association between smartphone addiction and sleep disturbances and psychological disstress among participants (p <0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of smartphone addiction among students at highschools and universities is alarming and is related to sleep disturbances and psychological disstress among participants. There is a strong call to develop intervention to help students to aware and manage the use of smartphone effectively.

This study first approaches the history of the observer’s gaze, that is, as observers, we are forming or constructing our way of visualizing moving images. Secondly, it reaffirms the importance and need of resistance of the teaching / learning of Art as a compulsory curricular component for high school. Finally, the third part reports an experience with video art production in a class of first year high school students, establishing an interrelationship between theory and practice, that is, we study video art content to reach the production of videos, aiming as a final result, the art videos created by the students of the Reference Center in Environmental Education Forest School Prof. Eidorfe Moreira High School. The first and second stages of this research share a theoretical part of the Master ‘s thesis, Making films on the Island: audiovisual production as an escape line in Cotijuba, periphery of Belem, completed in 2013.
