The purpose of this article is to explore how gender representations are portrayed through the examination of the salient images and messages latent in a prime-time comic series entitled Kenza FDouar (Kenza in the village) that was aired during the holy month of Ramadan in 2014 on 2M which is a Moroccan state-owned television channel. The study adopts the textual representation approach and draws heavily on the critical discourse analysis. The findings point to the absence of a coherent and consistent policy by the domestic outlet towards the gender issue in the series. The paper also reveals that the gender representations as manifested in the program are not compatible with the institutional endeavor to counter the perpetuation of stereotypical portrayals on the national media.

The various local media and national media report about a case of the dissolution of the odalan ceremony in Bantul Yogyakarta with a different bias. This study analyzes the discourse that was produced by CNNindonesia and Solopos.com in order to reveal how the national media trends CNNIndonesia.com and local media Solopos.com in reporting the odalan ceremony case. The theory used is the three dimentions of Norman Faircough’s critical discourse analysis, namely the textual dimension, discourse practice, and the sociocultural with three stages approach: description, explanation, and interpretation. In the text dimension stage, the text tools analyzed are the title, gramatical structure of the contents of the text, and the use of conjunctions. The second dimension, the researcher analyzes the interdiscursivity and intextuality sections to explain how the media construct the news text. In the third part, the researcher explains sociocultural practices by analyzing power and ideology. The results are CNNIndonesia.com taking sides with the odalan ceremony group and vice versa Solopos.com taking sides with residents who refuse. The media uses related actors as power over ideology of each party.

Abstract This article analyses the official discourse of the Chechen authorities and posits that it reflects the government’s efforts as self-legitimation. This investigation seeks to identify the mechanisms exploited by the Chechen regime to boost self-legitimacy by examining the ‘News’ programme on the Chechen state television channel ‘Grozny’, which, in the authoritarian setting of Chechnya, became the government’s mouthpiece and a propagator of official discourse. To provide for the context and to boost findings, the study is complemented by a discursive analysis of one more historical-political television programme and a political advertisement that was broadcast by the same channel during the period in which the fieldwork took place. The collected data is processed using Critical Discourse Analysis.

This article uses critical discourse analysis (CDA) to analyse occurrences of female superiority and racial stereotypes in Quantico, ABC’s breakthrough show in fall 2015. This show features Alex Parrish, a strong female lead of Indian descent. Through the use of CDA, we looked closely at the behaviours and aggressive language of the show’s characters. After analysing season 1 of Quantico (roughly 405 minutes of material), an important conclusion of this study is that, unlike other prime-time television tendencies in the past, the results of this analysis showed significantly more occurrences of female superiority than racial stereotyping. Evidence of female superiority came in the measures that concerned aggressive/authoritative language, violent behaviour and the sexualising of characters on ABC’s Quantico.

In results, the concern of researches related to Islam in media only focuses on terrorism issue. Providing this background, this research is aimed to raise the issue related to Moslems and the Chinese minority in Indonesia, specifically in the celebration of Chinese New Year 2013 which is associated with Islamic issue. The data of this research are two newspaper articles. The first article is written by a journalist working for Agence France Presse (AFP) as the foreign media. Meanwhile, the other is written by The Jakarta Post which is the national media. The pivotal theory applied in this research is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. This theory comprises of two notions of analysis namely communicative event analysis and order of discourse analysis. Orientalism theory by Edward W. Said regarding the self and the other is also applied to analyze the socio-cultural context of the data. In this case, AFP represents the self, while The Jakarta Post is the other. After conducting thorough analysis, the findings disclose that the self represents Indonesian Islam negatively. In contrast, the other represents Indonesian Islam objectively</p>
