Ondel-ondel, initially believed to have fearsome characteristics and magical ability to ward evil spirits off, is still performed in various areas in Jakarta on particular occasions. Ondel-ondel was originally an ancient artwork named barongan. This research aims to seek a theoretical explanation of the ondel-ondel phenomenon by examining the relationship between the media and local culture. Several defining features of postmodernism are incorporated to reframe ondel-ondel as a form of entertainment, along with the interplay between the tradition and technology-assisted media. This paper seeks to reveal the actual meaning of ondel-ondel for locals and non-locals during their encounters with ondel-ondel. The research found (1) that ondel-ondel is an attempt to reinvent the way people seek entertainment in the face of changes brought about by modernity and (2) that the presence of ondel-ondel communicated in the virtual space generates digital traces in the form of messages contributing to the creation and the re-creation of ondel-ondel itself.

Javanese literary works, especially the Panji tales, often feature human characters with animal names, such as Kuda Narawangsa, Kebo Kanigara, and Kidangwalangka. This naming phenomenon can also be found in old Javanese inscriptions. Recent studies generally concluded that such naming tradition occurred during the Kadiri-Majapahit era, and this was closely related to the banner of the army and the identity of makasirkasir. This study aims to reveal the motivation behind the naming tradition and the relationship between personal name, social status, and occupation of the person so named throughout the ancient Javanese era. This study uses Nyström’s onomastical approach, especially the concept of anthroponomics, namely the presuppositional meanings of proper names consisting of categorial, associative, and emotive meanings. This research utilized archaeological methods which involved data collection, data processing, and interpretation. Results show that this naming phenomenon was generally motivated by people’s appreciation of certain animals that had a special place and played an important role in the ancient Javanese society and culture. The correlation between the names and the characters’ social status and occupation has been found to be influenced by the sociocultural development during the Ancient Mataram and Kadiri-Majapahit periods.

In medical-psychology, schizophrenia is defined as a severe psychotic disorder that causes its sufferers to experience hallucinations and chaotic behaviors. However, the paradigm of schizoanalysis considers schizophrenia as a system of thought that opposes the existence of established discourses (i.e. the Oedipus System). One form of schizophrenia can be seen in the Joker movie (2019). This research aims to identify the schizophrenia suffered by Arthur Fleck, the movie’s main character, from the schizoanalysis perspective as proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. This qualitative research applied the interpretative description method based on the schizoanalysis perspective. This research found that the Joker character, as a schizophrenic, successfully reconstructs established ideas in his own ways solely through his desires. Joker unleashes his desires through practices presented as a form of resistance to the established system in Gotham City. This “madness” character was displayed by Arthur Fleck who opposes prevailing social values and norms, which he had previously imagined and questioned. However, he ends up destroying a greater system or order. Joker, as a progressive and revolutionary schizophrenic subject, clearly shows how a person can deconstruct the Oedipus to turn it into a counter-ammunition. Furthermore, the movie also shows that the broader “Joker movement” is disorganized as much as it is unplanned, spontaneous, and creative. Such spontaneity and creativity generates the flow of energy which stimulates those demonstrators to take a fight against capitalism.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which is a global disaster, has an impact on all aspects of human life. Indonesia is one of the countries that have a high rate of COVID-19 incidences, which naturally has led to various policies intended to suppress further transmission by limiting social mobility. During this pandemic, people are faced with uncertain conditions that result in an increasing level of boredom, fear, and even public anxiety. The author was interested in exploring the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic by examining the possible relationship between public anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic and an awareness of the need for spirituality which may be achieved by means of performing a Javanese spiritual practice called tapa brata. This practice was then examined in relation to public anxiety that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our analysis has generated several main results. Firstly, anxiety among the people during the pandemic is caused by a common awareness of the uncertain and constantly changing reality. Secondly, tapa brata is a mental practice of forming a calmer and wiser self which can adapt to all changes. Thirdly, tapa brata is an esoteric, personal practice that can overcomepublic anxiety during a pandemic and has a positive physiological effect on people’s immunity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This article aims to understand the development of fashion consumerism in the United Kingdom (UK) with the focus: why fast fashion consumerism in the last two decades was very high? This study applied a post-structuralism paradigm, namely the Libidinal Economy concept from Jean-Francois Lyotard and a post-modernism paradigm on the Consumer Society from Jean Baudrillard. The method employed in the article is a case study in the UK in the last two decades. Data were collected from scientific writings, documents, news, and advertisements in media. The results show that fashion consumerism in the UK dated back to the 18th century; it strengthened in the first two decades of the 21st century, driven by libidinal economic activities and facilitated massively by technological advancements in both marketing and trades. The ability of multinational fast fashion companies to utilize the mass media to construct the social status of its consumers and to create “hyper-reality” needed by modern people nowadays seemed to surpass the awareness of British clothing consumers regarding the environmental impacts and global imbalances of the fast fashion industry. In this study, the application of the post-structuralism paradigm clarifies the relationship between technology, mass media, the expansion of capitalism and the consumption of fast fashion in British society, whereas the post-modernism paradigm highlights socio-cultural aspects that encouraged the creation of hyper-reality through fast fashion among the British. These findings contribute to the knowledge about the relationship between technology, media, and multinational fast fashion companies with the development of consumer society in the UK.

This research is entitled “Construction of Nationalism Identity in Baduy Society Based on Pikukuh and Buyut.” This is a library research on the philosophical life of the Baduy, a traditional community in Indonesia. Analysis was conducted using interpretation, inductive and deductive, internal coherence, and holistica approaches. This research resulted is some conclusions. First, the Baduy community was found to uphold a form of ethno-nationalism which is based on Pikukuh and Buyut with a strong focus on the meaning of leadership, communal life, and observance of laws. However, this ethno-nationalism does not conflict with the state nationalism upheld by the Indonesian government. Indeed, seba shows that there has always been good relationship between the Baduy people (which uphold ethno-nationalism) and the Indonesian government (which upholds state nationalism). Secondly, the “imagined” nationalism in the Baduy community is founded based on traditional bond, in which case nationalism is not separated from tradition. Consequently, the values are oriented towards basic rationality in order to construct an identity of nationalism unique to the Baduy community. However, at the same time, instrumental rationality and the value-oriented rationality have the same role, in that they serve to construct the meaning of nationalism in the Baduy community. All of these factors result in a harmonious relationship between ethno-nationalism upheld by the the Baduy community and state nationalism upheld by the Indonesian government.

Literature, as a work containing facts and fiction, can obscure the conventions of realities and create new realities so that there are no visible boundaries between the real thing and the unreal thing. Fact and fiction coincide and simulate to form hyperreality. In the short story “Yang Datang dari Negeri Asap (Who Comes from the Smoky Country)” by Hary B. Kori’un, the existence of facts and fiction overlap each other. The author created the country of smoke as a fictitious world due to his contemplation on the consumption culture, which is a phenomenon in people’s lives and relates it to the haze disaster that keeps going to occur every year. The researcher sorts out facts and fiction that are interconnected in the short story to explore the creation of hyperreality using the perspective of Jean Baudrillard. As a result, the researcher found a consumption culture in the community, especially plantation entrepreneurs. The presence of a new world in a short story is a reproduction of the value of a sign or symbol that simulates as if there was a poverty scenario created by globalization through a variety of industrial distribution media to extract all potentials to benefit an established industry. Finally, consumption culture causes all aspects of life to be a commodity object because the needs that arise will always exceed the production of goods.

This paper discusses the syntactic function of the word jeongmal (정말) analyzed through part of speech (품사). In the Korean language, a word can be classified into more than one parts of speech, which is called pumsa tongyong (품사통용) or conversion. An example of pumsa tongyong is the word jeongmal, which can function as an adverb, noun, and interjection. This research shows that such classification makes the word jeongmal has different functions in a syntactic unit, which are main component (predicate), attributive component (adverb), and independent component. In addition, the limitations of the word jeongmal as a noun and POS-tagging error in classifying the word jeongmal as an interjection in the corpus were found. The syntactic function of the word jeongmal is important to be understood because jeongmal is a basic vocabulary with a high frequency of use, both spoken and written. This research is using a quantitative-qualitative method by analyzing a corpus (corpus-based analysis), 21st Century Sejong Corpora (21세기 세종 말뭉치). POS-tagged written and spoken corpus data is used as the data source of this research.
