Objective: To compose a portrait of a typical consumer for various optional lines of equipping a high- speed platform car (“smart” car) with an on-board telemetry system. Methods: The means and methods of marketing, rolling questioning, statistical processing of information, comparison, general systems theory, systemic and economic analyzes, logistics, terminology, visualization are used. Results: Optional lines have been developed for each variant of the technical design of the car, based on the results of processing the questionnaires of the respondents, a portrait of a typical consumer has been compiled; some recommendations on the composition of options in each version of the high-speed platform have been made. Practical importance: The results obtained can be applied when entering the market in terms of establishing optional lines for the design of a high-speed platform and cost. Further research should be aimed at a more detailed study of market segments with the development of the best price and functional-option solutions for the final target consumer.

Objective: Drawing on the results of the conducted marketing research, to work out a portrait of a potential consumer of groupage cargo transportation in a pallet wagon and a matrix of market consumer expectations with an assessment of customer focus and effective demand; provide a list of technical requirements for the car, potential routes, additional options and services for the transportation of groupage cargo in a pallet car, on the basis of which to evaluate possible options for technical solutions. Methods: Comparative analysis and assessment of the obtained analytical dependencies are applied; the need for options based on statistical processing of respondents’ answers is justified. Results: Technical solutions in several versions are recommended, the concept of a covered wagon with a large-volume body and an increased length of the loading and unloading front, with a draft gear, in a single-storey design, was proposed as a general one when a pallet car enters the market. An integral assessment of the opinions of respondents was carried out, by means of statistical analysis and visualization of the results obtained, a typical consumer was characterized. Practical importance: Marketing research data can be used when entering the market in terms of establishing optional lines of technical performance of rolling stock and its cost.

Objective: Drawing on the study of the situation in railway passenger traffic, to propose measures for the reconstruction of station M of the Murmansk transport hub and perform a consolidated estimate of the cost of implementing the proposed measures. Methods: The means and methods of general systems theory, system and economic analysis, terminalistics, logistics and management of the ope- rational work of railways are used. Results: Based on the results of the economic calculation, it was concluded that it is necessary to reconstruct the exhibition track N 2 to receive passenger trains of 25 cars and organize work with double-deck cars. A consolidated estimate of the cost of building an exhibition track N 2 has been made. Practical importance: Thanks to the increase in the useful track length, new opportunities will be opened for the development of promising passenger traffic at the station in question and, consequently, for an increase in the profit of the Russian Railways company. The results obtained can be applied in the implementation of the development concept of the Mur- mansk transport hub, in the design of individual elements and devices of the railway hub, as well as in the optimization of passenger service technology.

Objective: To analyze special features of block trains and container trains promotion in the terminal network of the Saint Petersburg hub, in the environment of the discussed transport hub. Methods: The means and methods of the theory of warehouse systems developed by O. B. Malikov, general systems theory, system and economic analysis, logistics, and railways operational management have been applied. Results: It has been established that in order to attract transit cargo flows and further develop international transport corridors passing through the Saint Petersburg hub, primarily East–West directions, it is necessary to create a network of container terminals with flexible logistics. This solution will expand the range of delivery areas using block trains, form competitive through rates, reorient highly profitable freight traffic from road transport to railways, as well as organize interaction with European and Chinese intermodal and stevedore slotting operators and expand the operation areas block trains, container trains, express and specialized trains. Practical importance: The results obtained can be applied in the implementation of the Saint Petersburg transport hub development concept, in the design of railway hub individual elements and units, as well as in the servicing optimization of the seaport and terminal infrastructure.

Objective: Having studied the features of container train compositions and the container storage conditions in an open area, to propose measures for the station modification and perform a few calculations demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed measures. Me¬thods: Methods of the general systems theory, system and economic analysis, terminalistics, logistics, and railways opera-tional ma¬nagement have been applied. Results: Two alternative options for the development of a container station are proposed, considering the features of the logistics facilities’ evolution and the theory of terminalistics: extension of the railway track and widening the station for storing high-capacity containers by 20 meters. The technology of container train composition on station tracks is considered. The performance of container train composition is calculated taking into account the technology chan¬ging. Practical importance: The increased capacity of the container station opens up new opportunities for the development of a promising container traffic at the station under consideration and, consequently, for the growth of profitability of the terminal and logistics busi-ness of JSC Russian Railways. The study findings can be applied in the implementation of the con-cepts for the development of the container business of the Russian Railways Holding, the creation of a network of terminal and logistics centers in the Russian Federation, as well as in the design of individual elements of the terminal and warehouse infrastructure and optimization of the container train servicing processes.

AbstractThe high-speed impact of a droplet onto a flexible substrate is a highly non-linear process of practical importance, which poses formidable modelling challenges in the context of fluid–structure interaction. We present two approaches aimed at investigating the canonical system of a droplet impacting onto a rigid plate supported by a spring and a dashpot: matched asymptotic expansions and direct numerical simulation (DNS). In the former, we derive a generalisation of inviscid Wagner theory to approximate the flow behaviour during the early stages of the impact. In the latter, we perform detailed DNS designed to validate the analytical framework, as well as provide insight into later times beyond the reach of the proposed analytical model. Drawing from both methods, we observe the strong influence that the mass of the plate, resistance of the dashpot, and stiffness of the spring have on the motion of the solid, which undergo forced damped oscillations. Furthermore, we examine how the plate motion affects the dynamics of the droplet, predominantly through altering its internal hydrodynamic pressure distribution. We build on the interplay between these techniques, demonstrating that a hybrid approach leads to improved model and computational development, as well as result interpretation, across multiple length and time scales.

Objective: Solving the problem of determining the conditions for the onset and development of unstable fracture, which is extremely important for the development of methods for calculating the limiting states of structural elements, improving the dynamic testing schemes of materials and classifying steels according to their ability to resist fracture. Methods: Analytical methods for assessing the limiting state of structural elements are used. Results: A brief overview of the available test methods for structural steels for dynamic strength and crack resistance is given. The experience accumulated by domestic and foreign practices in testing steels for strength and crack resistance under high-speed loading is analyzed. The disadvantages of the existing methods for assessing the indicators of dynamic strength and resistance to brittle fracture are indicated. Practical importance: It is shown that along with the traditional methods for assessing strength based on safety factors, it is necessary to develop and apply new methods for assessing the limiting state of structural elements, including by the criteria of crack resistance
