The article discusses the role of the social context in the evolution of implemented urban development utopia. The ontological and morphostructural problems of one of the implemented urban development utopias on the example of the city of Togliatti are revealed. It was established that the general plan of the Avtozavodsky district of Tolyatti, which fully met the ideals of the Athenian Charter, came into conflict with the idea of the city as a concentrated environment. It is noted that modern Togliatti is in search of a solution to the problem of the integrity of the urban structure. The conclusion is drawn: overcoming the crisis state of Togliatti lies in the field of generating, including new utopias; integration of existing morphostructures; reinforcing redundant conceptuality of form with contextual content. A new morphological unit is proposed - this is macro frame, which is based on multilevel integration of traffic and pedestrian flows.

The architecture and urban planning competitions are a form of architectural activity that bring creative ideas important for parts of cities or territories, and they can precede the creation of future planning documentation. At the end of the 19th century and in the 20th century, the competitions were occasionally used for solving the most important problems in urban structure of cities. In this respect, Belgrade joined many important European cities. The great urban planning competitions influenced the urban planning solutions and the creation of the waterfront identity. This paper analyses three examples of great public urban planning competitions that were organized at the time of important turning point in the development of waterfronts of the rivers Sava and Danube. This research opens up the question of a specific role of competitions that marked the theoretical and practical problems of their time. Investigating the views of the city, authentic ambiences and recognizable images of the city, the participants provided numerous answers that have influenced the existing identity of the Belgrade waterfront area over time.

The paper deals with characteristics of multifamily housing development (MHD) in specific conditions of post-socialist transition. Multi-layered political, institutional and socio-economic changes have influenced the change in the urban structure of cities, including housing areas. Time distance of thirty years from the beginning of transition in Serbia, gives us a good position to monitor and fully understand the effects of changes, including the last and longest-term phase of transitional process - urban changes. The development of multifamily housing is examined on the example of the city of Nis, a typical socialist industrial city that underwent dramatic changes in the post-socialist period and represent a good testing ground for transitional changes and their effects. The goal of the paper is to recognize different types of multifamily housing and the transitional changes that led to certain type of development and their spatial distribution in the city. The research suggests that multifamily housing development is especially influenced by privatization in the initial phase of transition, restitution in the later phase of transition, changing role of public and private sector in housing development, as well as changes in urban planning.

Since the 1950s, the urban structure of Abruzzo has gradually polarized on the area of Pescara-Chieti, as the expression of a series of location and settlement advantages. There, the trade sector, favoured by a period of expansion of large-scale commercial distribution, represented a powerful vehicle for territorial convergence and cohesion, contributing to the progressive process of marginalization of urban proximity trade. The aim of this work is to go beyond the opposition between suburban shopping center/central urban trade and to propose an interpretation at intra-urban scale that starts from peripheral neighbourhoods and peculiar spaces: They are able, in some cases, to better represent urban identity, but, above all, to provide a favourable observation point from which to promote a balanced and sustainable reorganization of the city.

- The laical mark on the devotional city: public and private intervention in Milan between the beginning of Spanish domination and Manzoni's plague The article is aimed to stress the importance of laical action in the building and infrastructural sectors in the period between the second half of 16th century and the pla- gue of 1630. One of the major interventions in this sector was the reconstruction of the city wall, about which the article accounts of a number of important data. This, with other important works carried out in the same period, induces to reconsider the role played by laics, intended as both public institutions and private, in reshaping the urban structure of Milan. The article also gives back to building sector a role of first importance in sustaining the growing phase in Milanese economy, towards a traditional approach that tends to consider this period less dynamic if compared with both precedent and subsequent ones and almost entirely characterised by the initiative of ecclesiastics.

Understanding the role of urban public spaces in today’s historic Spanish Mediterranean cities is a key priority for researchers and urban professionals. Increasingly, social media showcases users’ preferences, a trend that can provide an indication as to why some urban public spaces are preferred over others. This research focuses on preferred urban public spaces in historic cities in the province of Alicante (Spain) and has two objectives: to identify their urban morphological features; and, to recognise similar traits in terms of their location within the urban structure. The method involved: first, analysing Foursquare social media data on user preferences about urban public spaces; second, studying spatial and functional urban attributes; and third, recognising their role within the city structure. The results demonstrate that the preferred urban spaces share morphological attributes; a central position in the urban structure; mixed-use ground floor activities; and the presence of relevant urban public facilities.

The formation of the ecological framework of the city determines its viability in general as a modern settlement structure that meets the requirements of sustainable development. In this case, the ecological framework of the city becomes the basis that will be able to form a single ecosystem of the city and establish a format of connections between its various elements. The purpose of the article was to determine the role of the settlement area in the formation of the ecological framework of a large city. This article identifies the role of residential areas in the formation of the ecological framework of the city. The author analyzes the concept of "ecological framework" and its compliance with the peculiarities of the urban structure. It was found that the ecological framework is mainly interpreted as a natural framework. In an urban environment, this leads to certain inconsistencies. The city also has its own spatial framework, which includes a number of properties and characteristics. Therefore, the author proposes to consider the ecological framework of large cities as a system of interaction of natural and urban frameworks. Establishing the right relationship between them will ensure compliance with the level of environmental safety in the city and its sustainable development. It was established that there is no understanding of the concept of ecological framework in the context of urbanization. Most authors consider the ecological framework exclusively as a natural framework of the territory, which is relevant for large areas outside large cities. It is proposed to take into account the peculiarities of the existence and development of the urban organism, which has its own structure, its own spatial framework. It is determined that the urban framework consists of elements of different functions, which are interconnected by a network of communications. All elements create a certain load on the natural structure of the territory (natural framework). It is proposed to consider the ecological framework of a large city as a combination of natural and urban framework. It is their rational combination that will help to improve the environmental situation as a whole and will meet the conditions of sustainable development of the city. Keywords: ecological framework, settlement territory, natural framework, urbanization, ecological stabilization, ecological knots, ecological corridors.

<p>Considering the tendency for expansion, diversification and fragmentation of the present city´s urban spaces, and considering that in the last decades public space lost much of the formal and functional attributes that it held in the past (in the historical city), the main problem that we currently face as architects and planners, seems to be how to articulate and (re) build (new) public places that materialise, in a qualified manner, the collective experience (the new ways of living, social interaction and displacement) of the “newer parts” of the city, and that simultaneously incorporate attributes that transform them into memorable and perennial spaces - landmarks of the city that is to come.<br />The recent practical and theoretical outputs contradictorily appear to demonstrate a relative devaluation of the structuring role of public space, especially in those less consolidated parts of the city. Regarding the architectonic and urbanistic practice, we conclude that, in a time of mediatisation of architecture (in particular by the enhancement of the image and of iconographic values), the construction of the city and the materialisation of public space expresses, in many cases, generic and epidermal responses with visible consequences in terms of urban structure and perception of the city. Regarding the theoretic outputs, the insights also do not appear, in general, to contribute towards a theoretical framework committed to a consistent practical knowledge, or the resolution of the key issues and challenges that the city faces today.<br />Taking into account these considerations, and starting with a brief diagnosis that will focus on the major “weaknesses or controversies” that we identify in the theoretical discourse on the city and on public space, this paper will seek to focus on the importance of the urbanistic vocation of public space by identifying three main issues or key purposes to think and retrieve the public space project in the contemporary city. The three key purposes that will help us to recognize the strategic importance of public space in the contemporary European “enlarged city”, and that will be analysed by using a case study, are:<br />- The public space as an ordering element of “new urban expansion”;<br />- The public space as a factor of reconstruction of the “city without a plan”;<br />- The public space as a (re)structuring element of the “metropolitan city”.</p>
