Production and decomposition of mangrove litter could contribute organic matter and nutrients to the coastal waters. This study was to estimate the extent to which the rehabilitated mangrove of Rhizophora mucronata and Sonneratia alba contribute organic matter. This study was conducted from November 2015 to January 2016. Litter traps were used to collect the litter production and litterbags to measure decomposition rates. The results showed that the average of litter production for Sonneratia alba and Rhizophora mucronata was 4,38 g.m-2.day-1 and 3,61 g.m-2.day-1, respectively. However, Sonneratia alba apparently showed higher decay rates compare with Rhizophora mucronata. Nutrients element (N and P) released were 321,2 kg.ha-1.years-1 and 47,45 kg.ha-1.years-1 for Sonneratia alba; and 131,4 kg.ha-1.years-1 and 13,14 kg.ha-1.years-1 for Rhizophora mucronata. Overall, this study indicated that the mangrove rehabilitation in the area study contributed insignificantly carbon restocking the affected area, although it was able to provide ecological functions of this mangrove ecosystem.

The mangrove ecosystem is a coastal ecosystem that has important ecological roles and functions in supporting marine resources and fisheries. The existence of a sustainable and healthy mangrove ecosystem cannot be separated by the supply of organic matter from mangrove litter. Litter is vegetative and reproductive structures avalanches caused by the factor of aging, stress by mechanical factors, or a combination of both and the death and destruction of the whole plant by the climate (rain and wind). The purpose of this study was to determine the production of mangrove leaf litter, compare the production of litter of several dominant types of mangrove found in Mang Kalok Beach, and to determine the value of environmental parameters related to litter. Research was conducted in January until March 2018 in Mang Kalok Beach, District Sungailiat, Bangka. A common method used for making the production of litter is litter-trap method (Net container litter). The production of mangrove leaf litter in Mang Kalok Beach is more produced from the type Ceriops decandra with a mass of 185.7gr / m2 / 30 days compared to the type of Rhizophora mucronata which only produces 119.6gr / m2 / 30 days. The total production of mangrove leaf litter at Mang Kalok Beach is 305.3 gr / m2 / 30 days or 10.17 gr / m2 / day. While the environmental parameters show that the condition of Mang Kalok Beach is still good and can support the process of absorption of organic matter from mangrove leaf litter.

The decomposition rates of 14C-labelled plant residues in different parts of the world were characterized and mathematically simulated. The easily decomposable materials, cellulose and hemicellulose, were described as being decomposed directly by the soil biomass; the lignin fraction of aboveground residues and the resistant portion of the roots entered a decomposable native soil organic matter. Here it could be decomposed by the soil biomass or react with other soil constituents in the formation of more recalcitrant soil organic matter. The transformation rates were considered to be independent of biomass size (first–order). Data from 14C plant residue incorporation studies which yielded net decomposition rates of added materials and from carbon dating of the recalcitrant soil organic matter were transformed to gross decomposition rate constants for three soil depths. The model adequately described soil organic matter transformations under native grassland and the effect of cultivation on organic matter levels. Correction for microbial growth and moisture and temperature variations showed that the rate of wheat straw decomposition, based on a full year in the field in southern Saskatchewan, was 0.05 that under optimal laboratory conditions. The relative decay rates for plant residues during the summer months of the North American Great Plains was 0.1 times that of the laboratory. Comparison with data from other parts of the world showed an annual relative rate of 0.12 for straw decomposition in England, whereas gross decomposition rates in Nigeria were 0.5 those of laboratory rates. Both the decomposable and recalcitrant organic matter were found to be affected by the extent of physical protection within the soil. The extent of protection was simulated and compared to data from experimental studies on the persistence of 14C-labelled amino acids in soil. The extent of protection influenced the steady-state levels of soil carbon upon cultivation more than did the original decomposition rates of the plant residues.

Mangrove litter production is important in the displacement of organic matter from mangrove vegetation to water such as in the coast of West Muna Regency. However, one factor influencing it is the frequency of rainfall. This research, therefore, aims to determine the influence of the frequency of rainfall in mangrove ecosystem by obtaining data through the fractional wet weight. The results showed that the biomass fraction with the largest amount were Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, and Sonneratia alba with of 31.59; 31.07; and 30.96%, respectively, while the lowest was Rhizophora stylosa, Bruguiera cylindrica, and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza with of 30.07; 30.10; and 31.95%, respectively. The species with the largest leaf litter production was Bruguiera cylindrica, with of 1.72 g.m-2.day-1 which occurred in April and the lowest was Rhizophora apiculata, 0.24 g.m-2.day-1 in August. The species with the largest leaf litter production was Bruguiera cylindrica, 1.96 g.m-2.day-1 which occurred in May and the lowest was Sonneratia alba, 0.29 g.m-2.day-1 in August. In addition, the species with the largest fruit litter production was Rhizophora apiculata, 1.76 g.m-2.day-1 in April and the lowest was Sonneratia alba, 0.32 g.m-2.day-1 in September. The total litter production was 18,75 g.m-2.day-1 consisted of 6,69 g.m2.day-1 leaf litter, 6,54 g.m-2.day-1 branch litter, and 5,52 g.m-2.day-1 fruit litter. The higher the frequency of the rain, the greater the litter production.   Keywords: biomass fraction, seasonal litter production, West Muna Regency

Mangrove at Tahura Ngurah Rai Bali contributes the organic material into environment. Polychaeta is one of the main benthic macrofauna that has important role in accumulating organic material to mangrove ecosystem. The purpose of this research is to explain the abundance and diversity of Polychaeta such as Rhizophora mucronata, mix mangrove and Sonneratia alba at Tahura Ngurah Rai. The sampling of Polychaeta using corers with diameter 17 cm and height 18 cm those sink in the substrate. The abundance was analyzed by the Krebs and diversity was analyzed by Shannon Wiener index. There were five genus of Polychaeta, such as Heteromastus, Marphysa, Laeonereis, Nereis, and Paranaitis. The highest abundance of Polychaeta was found in mixed stations (432 ± 57,37 ind/m2), and the lowest abundance was in R. mucronata (414 ± 79,93 ind/m2). The abundance of Polychaeta in the three stations did not differ significantly because it was influenced by the dominant substrate of sandy clay. The highest Polychaeta diversity was found in S. alba (0,704), followed by the mixed station (0,642), and the lowest was in R. mucronata. The value of Polychaeta diversity on the three stations differed significantly because of the comparison between the type and total number of individuals in each station that varied. The Polychaeta diversity index in the three stations is low, while the Polychaeta abundance value in each station is quite abundant. The result showed that the stability of the Polychaeta community in the mangrove ecosystem is unstable.

Benthic suspension feeders, such as bivalves, potentially have several different food sources, including plankton and resuspended detritus of benthic origin. We hypothesised that suspension feeders are likely to feed on detritus if it is present. This inference would be further strengthened if there was a correlation between δ13C of suspension feeder tissue and δ13C of particulate organic matter (POM). Since detritus is characterised by high particulate organic matter (POC):chl a ratios, we would also predict a positive correlation between POM δ13C and POC:chl a. We hypothesised that increasing depth and greater distance from shore would produce a greater nutritional reliance by experimentally transplanted blue mussels Mytilus edulis on plankton rather than macrophyte-derived detritus. After deployments of 3 mo duration in 2 different years at depths from 3 to 40 m, M. edulis sizes were positively correlated with POM concentrations. POC:chl a ratios and δ13C of POM and M. edulis gill tissue decreased with increasing depth (and greater distance from shore). δ13C of POM was correlated with δ13C of M. edulis. Our results suggest that detritus comprised a large proportion of POM at shallow depths (<15 m), that M. edulis ingested and assimilated carbon in proportion to its availability in POM, and that growth of M. edulis was higher where detritus was present and POM concentrations were higher.
