Optical micro-angiography (OMAG) is a new method of detecting flow rate and widely used for in vivo imaging. Although OMAG can distinguish between flowing and stationary parts, it cannot obtain accurate flow rate information. This study proposed a range formula for OMAG and the ultrahigh-sensitivity OMAG (UHS-OMAG) method to quantify the measurement range of an entire system. The parameters of the angle between beam scanning and flow directions, the angular velocity of the galvanometer, and the offset of incident light were introduced, and a formula for calculating the range was derived. Experiments were conducted to measure fine and ultra-fine flow rates by using OMAG and UHS-OMAG methods. The minimum measured flow rate was approximately 30 μm/s, and the maximum measured flow rate was approximately 8 mm/s. Experimental results are in good agreement with the preset results.

The fabrication, analysis, and testing of a large flow rate and high frequency microvalve array are presented in this paper. The array consists of 88-microvalves fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. The SOI wafer simplifies the fabrication process and eliminates the need for multi-layer surface micromachining process and bulk wafer-bonding procedures. The analytical resonant frequency of the valve is up to 50 kHz and operates at high delta pressures (i.e. 0.14 MPa). The microvalves are fabricated with various flap widths ranging from 300 to 400 μm and flap thickness ranging from 10 to 13 μm. The results indicate that flap displacement and flow rate are strongly dependent on flap thicknesses and to a lesser degree on flap widths increases. The resonance frequency with valve flap thickness increases and width decreases. Comparison between predicted and measured flow rate shows good agreement. A flow rate up to 35 cc/sec was measured. A failure criterion is also presented using the fracture stress analysis and shows good agreement with experimental result.

Broadband acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) is widely used in agricultural water resource explorations, such as river discharge monitoring and flood warning. Improving the velocity estimation accuracy of broadband ADCP by adjusting the waveform parameters of a phase-encoded signal will reduce the velocity measurement range and water stratification accuracy, while the promotion of stratification accuracy will degrade the velocity estimation accuracy. In order to minimize the impact of these two problems on the measurement results, the ADCP waveform optimization problem that satisfies the environment constraints while keeping high velocity estimation accuracy or stratification accuracy is studied. Firstly, the relationship between velocity or distance estimation accuracy and signal waveform parameters is studied by using an ambiguity function. Secondly, the constraints of current velocity range, velocity distribution and other environmental characteristics on the waveform parameters are studied. For two common measurement applications, two dynamic configuration methods of waveform parameters with environmental adaptability and optimal velocity estimation accuracy or stratification accuracy are proposed based on the nonlinear programming principle. Experimental results show that compared with the existing methods, the velocity estimation accuracy of the proposed method is improved by more than 50%, and the stratification accuracy is improved by more than 22%.

In vivo microperfusion was used to examine the mechanism of luminal flow rate dependence of proximal tubule acidification. Luminal flow rate was acutely changed between 5 and 40 nl/min, while luminal and peritubular capillary composition were held constant. With inhibition of basolateral membrane base transport by peritubular 4,4'-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS), cell pH (pHi) provides a sensitive index of apical membrane H secretory activity. At a luminal perfusate [HCO3] of 25 mM, progressive increases in luminal flow rate (5----15----25----40 nl/min) caused progressive increases in pHi. This effect was of a smaller magnitude with a luminal perfusate [HCO3] of 60 mM and was further decreased at a luminal perfusate [HCO3] of 100 mM. This pattern of diminished flow rate dependence at higher luminal [HCO3] is consistent with the presence of a luminal unstirred layer, whose composition can be modified by luminal flow rate. The activity of the apical membrane Na-H antiporter, assayed as the initial rate of pHi recovery from an acid load in the presence of peritubular DIDS, was faster at 40 compared with 5 nl/min. Basolateral membrane Na-3HCO3 symporter activity, assayed as the initial rate of pHi recovery from an alkali load in the absence of luminal and peritubular chloride, was faster at 40 compared with 5 nl/min. This effect was eliminated by luminal amiloride, suggesting an indirect effect of flow mediated by changes in pHi secondary to flow rate-dependent changes in apical membrane Na-H antiporter activity. In summary, increases in luminal flow rate directly increase apical membrane H secretion, possibly by modification of a luminal unstirred layer.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

This paper presents a comparison of MELCOR calculated results with experimental data for the QUENCH-16 experiment. The analysis for the air ingress experiment QUENCH-16 has been performed by INRNE. The calculations have been performed with MELCOR code. The QUENCH-16 experiment has been performed on 27-th of July 2011 in the frame of the EC-supported LACOMECO program. The experiments have focused on air ingress investigation into an overheated core following earlier partial oxidation in steam. QUENCH-16 has been performed with limited pre-oxidation and low air flow rate. One of the main objectives of QUENCH-16 was to examine the interaction between nitrogen and oxidized cladding during a prolonged period of oxygen starvation. The bundle is made from 20 heated fuel rod simulators arranged in two concentric rings and one unheated central fuel rod simulator, each about 2.5 m long. The tungsten heaters were surrounded by annular ZrO2 pellets to simulate the UO2 fuel. The geometry and most other bundle components are prototypical for Western-type PWRs. To improve the obtained results it has been made a series of calculations to select an appropriate initial temperature of the oxidation of the fuel bundle and modified correlation oxidation of Zircaloy with MELCOR computer code. The compared results have shown good agreement of calculated hydrogen and oxygen starvation in comparison with test data.

Compartmental analysis was used to study the hepatobiliary transport of taurocholate (TC) in the rat in vivo. The available data are the following: [14C]TC kinetics in blood and bile, weighting factors associated with these data and computed from a theoretical variability model, and TC excretion rate in bile. The lumped model that best fits the data contains five compartments: three compartments for TC distribution in blood and two compartments for the liver. It includes a compartmental representation of the laminar flow of bile in the collecting catheter. This model overestimates TC concentration in blood. A perfusion model that includes a compartment representing explicitly the sinusoidal TC concentration gradient was developed. TC concentration in blood estimated by this model is in good agreement with direct measurements, showing that the perfused model has a better descriptive capacity than the lumped model. The amounts of TC estimated in the two hepatic compartments are similar to values previously published.

Abstract This was a study to compare computational and experimental results of flow field inside the venous anastomosis of an arteriovenous (AV) graft. Laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) measurements were conducted inside an upscaled end-to-side graft model under steady flow conditions at Reynolds number 1820 which is representative of the in vivo flow conditions inside a human AV graft. The distribution of the velocity and turbulence intensity was measured at several locations in the plane of the bifurcation. This flow field was simulated using computation fluid dynamics (CFD) and shown to be in good agreement. Under steady flow conditions, the flow field demonstrated an unsteady character (transition to turbulence).

A simple, fast, accurate and precise reverse phase HPLC method is developed and described for the determination of ramelteon in tablet dosage form. Chromatography was carried on an ODS column using a mixture of acetonitrile and phosphate buffer pH 7.0 (35:65 V/V) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min with detection at 286 nm. The retention time of the drug was 7.7 min. The procedure was validated for linearity, precision, accuracy, and robustness. The developed method was validated for linearity from 50 to 150% which shows the method is quite linear with a correlation coefficient of 0.999, for precision which includes system precision, method precision, intraday and by another analyst on another day, and accuracy. The %RSD for system precision was observed to be 1.1, whereas the method precision was observed to be 0.2. The % recovery from ‘accuracy’ studies yielded the recovery of 99.7-101.5% which indicates the capability of the method, and finally for robustness that includes studies w.r.t. change in flow rate, the percentage of organic modifier and pH. As per ICH guidelines, method validation results are in good agreement. The proposed method was simple, sensitive, precise and accurate.

We studied mesenteric arterial arcades from 3- and 35-day-old swine to determine the relationship between perfusate flow rate and release of nitric oxide (NO) into mesenteric effluent. Mesenteric arterial arcades were perfused under controlled-flow conditions with a peristaltic pump using warm oxygenated Krebs buffer. Basal rates of NO production were 43.6 ± 4.2 vs. 12.1 ± 2.5 nmol/min in 3- vs. 35-day-old mesentery during perfusion at in vivo flow rates (9 vs. 20 ml/min, respectively). Rate of NO production was directly related to flow rate over a wide range of flows (5–40 ml/min) in 3- but not 35-day-old mesentery. Both age groups demonstrated a brisk, albeit brief, increase in NO production in response to infusion of NO-dependent vasodilator substance P (10−8 M/min). Tyrosine kinase inhibitor herbimycin A andl-arginine analog l-NMMA significantly attenuated flow-induced increase in NO production, and phosphatase inhibitor phenylarsine oxide increased magnitude of flow-induced increase in NO production in 3-day-olds. Removal of extracellular Ca2+ and depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores (Ca2+-free Krebs with EGTA plus thapsigargin) had no effect on NO production in either group. Thus, basal rate of NO production is greater in mesenteric arterial arcades from 3- than from 35-day old swine, a direct relationship between flow rate and NO production rate is present in mesentery from 3- but not 35-day-olds, and phosphorylation events are necessary for this interaction to occur.
