SURFACE WATER QUALITY IN KHARKIV RECREATIONAL AREAS: 2006-2020

The aim of the paper is to assess dynamics of water quality in four main recreational areas in Kharkiv and to develop recommendations for water quality improvement. Methods. Field and laboratory methods and analytical data processing. Results. The paper presents analysis of dynamics in water quality for four main recreational areas located in Kharkiv: Zhuravlevskiy Hydropark, Oleksiivskiy Lugopark, Udyanskiy Hydropark and Osnovyanske Lake. Period of study: 2006-2020, time: May-June and August-September. Average data are presented. Samples were analysed at certified Laboratory of Analytical Chemical Research of the Karazin Institute of Environmental Sciences. Laboratory data were compared with national UA standards and European ones. Conclusions were made for the following key parameters: dissolved oxygen and BOD5, total mineralization, biogenic substances content, oil products and surfactants, toxic heavy metals content. There is no specific dynamics on the pollution level. Conclusions. The following recommendations for improvement of water quality were developed: (i) to preform regular monitoring of water quality; (ii) to introduce regular and systematic control by one local authority; (iii) to improve infrastructure of recreational areas; (iv) to introduce regular cleaning of the recreational areas; (v) to install bio-WC; (vi) to install additional waste containers (preferably with separate waste collection); (vii) plant trees for better isolation from highways; (viii) to improve level of water treatment on WWTP; (ix) to create nature protected areas along rivers

The level of cholinesterase in the human blood is a very good indicator of liver function. In this study we desrcibe the relationship between cholinesterase values obtained with routine laboratory methods and near infrared (NIR) spectral data of 72 individuals with a wide range of cholinesterase levels. NIR spectra were measured with a SPECTRALYZER 10–25 (PMC) computerised research analyser. The relationship of laboratory data and values of the second derivative of the log (1/ TF) spectra measured at different wavelengths was determined with multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis using three-term linear summation equations. A correlation coefficient ( r) of 0.89 and a standard error of calibration ( SEC) of 987 units L−1 (U/L) of the enzyme were obtained. Our results indicate that NIR measurements of cholinesterase in the human blood serum can be related to the analytical data obtained with routine laboratory methods. NIR spectroscopy is a rapid, accurate, and inexpensive method for determining various constituents in the human blood.

The study was aimed to determine the anionic detergent pollution level and some physico-chemical parameters (pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved substance, conductivity, temperature, phosphate, oxidation reduction potential) seasonally in Sarıkum Lake, which is located in Sinop province between November 2016 and July 2017. According to one-year measurement data, the highest of anionic detergent concentration was 0.056 mg / L and the lowest value was 0.021 mg / L. The classification of the results was made in accordance with the Water Pollution Control Regulation (2008) and Surface Water Quality Regulation (2016). In the study, Water quality is equivalent to Class I (high quality) in terms of anionic detergent, pH and temperature values but are equivalent to Class II (a bit dirty) and III (dirty) in point of dissolved oxygen, total dissolved matter and phosphate phosphorus values. In addition, it is equivalent to Class IV (very dirty) with regard to conductivity value. Detergent pollution coming from the settlements of Sarıkum Lake is observed to be low in contrast to expectations, while the high phosphorus value shows that the ecosystem living in the lake is exposed to agricultural pollution especially in terms of environmental resources.

The Manahara River located in northeast part of the Kathmandu Valley has been disturbed for last one decade by several anthropogenic activities and natural causes thereby deteriorating its recreational functions and stream habitat. To obtain an existing environmental condition and disturbances of the river, the river was surveyed for its habitat, pollution level and surface water quality. Among the five representative segments of the river, the downstream segment (Sano Thimi) was scored into intermediate category showing more pollution and environmental deterioration compared to the upstream segments. Turbidity, electrical conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand and ammonia increase, whereas dissolved oxygen decreases from upstream to downstream with exponential functions. Aquatic lives like Garra sp. (Buduna), Schizothorax sp. (Asala), Channa sp. (Hiele) and Heteropneustes sp. (Singe) were observed except in downstream of the Jadibuti Bridge situated downstream from Sano Thimi stretch. Fish species were rare from the Jadibuti area most probably due to reduced dissoved oxygen (5 mg/l). Coliform bacteria ranged from 3000 to 4000 in the Manahara River showing high amount of bacterial contamination. Major disturbances, which affect river habitat and surface water quality of the Manahara River were destruction of riparian buffer zones, excavation excessive amount of sand from the river, encroachment of floodplains and bars, solid waste and sewer effluent, and tendency of landuse change. The management of natural surface water resources requires an understanding and knowledge of water quality. The Lake Dayet Er-Roumi (classified as a Site of Biological and Ecological Interest (SIBE)) is the only permanent continental lake of low altitude in Morocco, this international attraction site is subject to various sources of anthropogenic pollution, in addition to the effects of climate change (thermal variability, lack of precipitation, etc.). The objective of this work is to quantify and assess the quality of the waters lake, and its tributaries through Spatio-temporal monitoring of several physicochemical parameters during two seasons (winter and summer) of the year 2019. All the physicochemical analysis (such as temperature, hydrogen potential, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, orthophosphates, and chlorides) were carried out at 7 study stations (5 stations at lake level and 2 stations representing the tributaries). Statistical calculation of the data set revealed high concentrations of chlorides in both seasons and orthophosphates during the summer season, with average nitrate concentrations during the winter season. The results obtained show that the pH of the water is basic with a very high electrical conductivity showing a load of water in different minerals. These results greatly exceed the standards of fish water quality and surface water quality. They show that the lake Dayet Er-Roumi is polluted. Strategies to limit the pollution of the lake must be implemented by decision-makers at all levels, in order to avoid several ecological problems (fish mortality for example).
