Abstract We develop a statistical framework to use the data of night-time-lights (DN) from satellite to augment official GDP measures, and a non-linear substitution relationship between DN and GDP is given. In this paper, we take advantage of DN instead of GDP to measure the imbalance of regional development (IRD) in China by using the method of bi-dimensional decomposition under the population-weighted coefficient of variation. The method enables us to analyze the contributions of DN components to within-region and between-regions inequality under the framework which has been proposed, we can get the conclusion that the imbalance between-regions rather than within-region is the main reason for the influence of IRD for the whole country in China.

Abstract Aims Arterial hypertension (AHT) represents the leading cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and premature death worldwide. Essential AHT accounts for 95% of all cases of hypertension; although the aetiology of essential AHT is still largely unknown, a pivotal role of autonomic nervous system has been proposed and demonstrated. Both excessive sympathetic tone and vagal withdrawal, that define autonomic dysfunction, has been associated with essential AHT. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between blood pressure and autonomic function in essential hypertension; this was done comparing 24 h heart rate variability and 24 h blood pressure data, simultaneously collected, in a population of essential AHT subjects. Methods A prospective registry of 179 consecutive not selected essential AHT patients were considered in the present study. All patients underwent cardiac evaluation at the Primary and Secondary Cardiovascular Prevention Unit of the Don Gnocchi Foundation of Parma. All subjects underwent 24 h ECG monitoring, and 24 h Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring, during the same day. Twenty-four hours Heart Rate variability analysis included: Time-domain, frequency-domain and non-linear domain. Results Mean age was 60 0a11.7 years, male gender was prevalent (68.4%). Among the population 26 (14.7%) subjects had diabetes; the prevalence of family history of CVD was 61.7% and 66.5% had dyslipidaemia; body mass index mean values were 27.6 7.4.3. In the whole population, the prevalence of uncontrolled AHT was 80.5%, divided into: 53.1% systo-diastolic, 17.9% isolated systolic, and 9.5% isolated diastolic. The prevalence of untreated AHT (recent diagnosis) was 40.2%, while treated AHT was 59.8% and only 19.6% had controlled blood pressure values (AHT at target). 12.3% of patients were treated with Beta Blockers. A significant correlations between diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values (24 h and day-time), LF/HF ratio (24 h) (r = 0.200; P = 007) and DFA alfa1 (24 h) (r = 0.325; P = 0.000), two know markers of sympathetic tone, were found. A higher sympathetic tone, expressed as high LF/HF, was found in isolated diastolic AHT compared to other types of AHT and the lowest sympathetic tone was found in isolated systolic AHT. Considering non-linear (complexity) analysis, DFA alfa1 (24 h) showed a significant correlation with DBP values that remained independent even after multiple adjustment for BMI, age, gender and Beta Blockers (β = 0.218; P = 0.011). Moreover, the lack of DBP control was associated with high sympathetic tone (LF/HF 3.8 112.3 vs 5.5 .33.3; P < 0.0001). On the other hand, no significant correlations between all DBP data and vagal markers, such as SDNN index, RMSSD and HF, were found. Again, no significant correlations between 24 h, daytime, night-time SBP and time or frequency HRV data as well as with non-linear (complexity) analysis were found. Finally, considering ‘autonomic dipping’, expressed as changes in HRV data between day and night, a strong inverse correlation between vagal markers and Heart Rate Dipping (r = −0.297; P < 0.0001) was found; correlation that remain independent even adjusted for age, gender, BMI, and BB. On the other hand, no association between blood pressure dipping and autonomic dipping was found. Conclusion Diastolic blood pressure and uncontrolled diastolic AHT, rather than systolic AHT, are associated with a hyper-sympathetic tone rather than with blunted vagal tone. The lack of heart rate dipping during night-time in AHT is associated with blunted vagal activation rather than a persistent night-time hyper-adrenergic tone.

The rapid development of technology coupled with humanity’s desire to reach beyond terra firma, has resulted in more than 60 years of Outer Space activities. Although the exploration of space has provided many advantages and benefits to society so far, including vast, new information that has greatly added to our understanding of our planet and beyond, unfortunately, mankind’s footprint has negative aspects that need to be minimised as much as possible. In recent decades, a major worldwide problem has emerged in regard to the significant increase in light pollution from ground-based illuminations, as well as a lack of proper regulatory frameworks to mitigate the issue in order to protect the night sky and astronomical research. More recently, due to the escalating demand of air space for microsatellites and the rapid development of these new space technologies, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), a new problem has arisen connected to visual light pollution (VLP). New Zealand has been especially affected, as, because of its dark skies, it has the third highest number of astronomical observatories in the world. The aim of this research is to identify critical areas for broader investigation; an action plan to improve the impact of new technologies is urgently required, not only at a national level but also worldwide. This is crucial in order to preserve humanity’s right to access the night sky and to also enable continual professional and amateur night-time observations for the present and the future, as well as for New Zealand to become a Dark Sky Nation.

Abstract. Making accurate estimations of daily and annual Rs fluxes is key for understanding the carbon cycle process and projecting effects of climate change. In this study we used high-frequency sampling (24 measurements per day) of Rs in a temperate rainforest during 1 year, with the objective of answering the questions of when and how often measurements should be made to obtain accurate estimations of daily and annual Rs. We randomly selected data to simulate samplings of 1, 2, 4 or 6 measurements per day (distributed either during the whole day or only during daytime), combined with 4, 6, 12, 26 or 52 measurements per year. Based on the comparison of partial-data series with the full-data series, we estimated the performance of different partial sampling strategies based on bias, precision and accuracy. In the case of annual Rs estimation, we compared the performance of interpolation vs. using non-linear modelling based on soil temperature. The results show that, under our study conditions, sampling twice a day was enough to accurately estimate daily Rs (RMSE  <  10 % of average daily flux), even if both measurements were done during daytime. The highest reduction in RMSE for the estimation of annual Rs was achieved when increasing from four to six measurements per year, but reductions were still relevant when further increasing the frequency of sampling. We found that increasing the number of field campaigns was more effective than increasing the number of measurements per day, provided a minimum of two measurements per day was used. Including night-time measurements significantly reduced the bias and was relevant in reducing the number of field campaigns when a lower level of acceptable error (RMSE  <  5 %) was established. Using non-linear modelling instead of linear interpolation did improve the estimation of annual Rs, but not as expected. In conclusion, given that most of the studies of Rs use manual sampling techniques and apply only one measurement per day, we suggest performing an intensive sampling at the beginning of the study to determine minimum daily and annual frequencies of sampling.

The article deals with the development of inter-regional disparities in the Czech Republic during the period of transition. Regional disparities are firstly set into wider context of regional development theories and consequently, disparities within the Czech Republic are compared with those in EU member states. Since the unemployment rate in the Czech Republic is unusually low, the interregional disparities seem small. However, the coefficient of variation reveals the contrary. Finally it is concluded that the inter-regional disparities in average incomes are still only a fraction of the disparities in economic preformance of the regions.

The quantity of human-generated light visible from outer space reflects variation in both population density and income per capita. In this paper we explore the usefulness of the change in visible light as a measure of GDP growth. We discuss the data, and then present a statistical framework that uses lights growth to augment existing income growth measures, assuming that measurement errors in the two series are uncorrelated. For some countries with very poor income measurement, we significantly revise estimates of growth. Our technique also produces growth estimates for cities or regions where no other data are available.

We develop a statistical framework to use satellite data on night lights to augment official income growth measures. For countries with poor national income accounts, the optimal estimate of growth is a composite with roughly equal weights on conventionally measured growth and growth predicted from lights. Our estimates differ from official data by up to three percentage points annually. Using lights, empirical analyses of growth need no longer use countries as the unit of analysis; we can measure growth for sub- and supranational regions. We show, for example, that coastal areas in sub-Saharan Africa are growing slower than the hinterland. (JEL E01, E23, O11, 047, 057)
