AbstractComplexes of arylidene salicyloyl- and benzoyl-hydrazones with the 3d metal ions, Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), have been prepared using 2:1 ligand to metal ion ratio. Characterization of the isolated solids was accomplished by IR and electronic spectra, elemental analysis, and molar conductivity measurements. It is concluded that the two Schiff bases function as neutral bidentate ligands and the complexes formed assume a distorted octahedral geometry.

Metal complex of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) with benzoic acid have been prepared and characterized by physiochemical methods. On the basis of electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurement in conjunction with infrared spectra, six coordinated octahedral structure have been proposed to all the complexes. The benzoic acid and their complexes have been tested for their antibacterial activity against the bacteriaE. coli,Bacillus subtilis,Pseudomonas aeruginosaandStaphylococcus aureus. Further, the non electrolytic nature of all the synthesized complexes was identified from conductivity measurements.

Mononuclear chelates of Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Cd(II), and Cu(II) derived from triazole novel tridentate ligands were prepared and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. The metal to ligand ratio was 1 : 2, which was revealed by elemental analysis. All the complexes were electrolytic in nature as suggested by the conductivity measurements. IR pointed out that the coordination of the triazole ligand toward the metal ions was carried out through N amino and S thiophenolic atoms. The complexes were found to have octahedral geometry, and their thermal stability was also studied. The XRD spectrum of Co(II) and Fe(III) complexes concluded their crystalline structure. The parent ligand and its chelates were investigated for antimicrobial potential. Bioassay of all triazole complexes showed increased activity as compared to that of the ligand. The complexes having Ni(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) ions as metal center exhibited superior antibacterial activity in opposition to Gram-positive (B. subtilis and S. pyogenes) and Gram-negative (E. coli and P. vulgaris) bacterium as compared to standard.

New cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes of 12-membered macrocyclic Schiff - base ligand containing thiosemicarbazone moiety as a part of ring have been prepared having general composition [MLX2] where M = Co(II) or Ni(II), L=3,4,9,10–tetra-2-furanyl-1,2,5,6,8,11- hexaazacyclododeca-7,12- dithione - 2,4,8,10 – tetraene, X = Cl-, NO3-, NCS-. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, spectral (IR, electronic, EPR) techniques and thermal analysis. Spectroscopic studies suggested a six coordinated octahedral geometry for all the complexes. The IR spectra of complexes suggest that ligand is coordinated to the metal ion through its four imines nitrogen. Conductivity measurements supported the non electrolytic nature of the complexes. The antifungal activities of complexes have been studied against a number of pathogenic fungi under laboratory conditions. The complexes showed good antifungal results. Thermal analysis of reported complexes suggests the absence of water molecule either in or outside the coordination sphere.

Four novel metal complexes of mixed amodiaquine and paraaminobenzoic acid have been synthesized using a standard method and confirmed by results of some physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques. Antimicrobial activities have been carried out on the complexes against some selected organisms: (antibacterial organisms: K. pneumonia, B. subtilis, E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and S. faecalis) and (antifungal organisms: Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum) to determine their effectiveness. The complexes were evaluated for their toxicity level in wister rats. The Amodiaquine and Paraaminobenzoic acid produce complexes in ratio 1:1:1 in coordination with the metal ion. Octahedral geometry has been proposed for all the complexes. The complexes were found to be non-electrolytic in nature. The complexes were observed to be more active than their free ligands as determined by their zone of inhibition (nm). The complexes have been proved to be less toxic to the body.

The Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonylhydrazone are described. It has been found that the ligand can coordinate to metal ion as a monobasic bidentate chelating agent and it can form di- and trinuclear complexes while acting as a dibasic tetradentate one. The structure of the isolated complexes have been suggested on the basis of elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy and conductivity measurements. The complexes are all formulated as four-coordinate. Some complexes showed enhanced antimicrobial activity relative to the free ligand.

Mixed-ligand ternary complexes of Cu (II) metal ion with 1,2,4 triazole (TRZ) and amino acids (histidine (L1), threonine (L2), proline (L3) and hydroxyl proline (L4)) have been synthesized. The prepared ternary chelates were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic spectra, as well as conductivity measurements. The general formula [Cu(TRZ)L]H2O were found for the ternary chelates containing TRZ. From the analytical and spectral data, the stoichiometry has been found to be 1:1:1 for all the complexes. A tetrahedral geometry has been proposed. Molecular modeling studies were also carried out to confirm the geometries of the complexes. All the new complexes were found to be active against bacteria. © 2014 JSR Publications. ISSN: 2070-0237 (Print); 2070-0245 (Online).
