Ordovician echinoderms from the Tabas and Damghan regions, Iran: palaeobiogeographical implications

Abstract Two echinoderm assemblages are described in the Middle Ordovician of Iran (Darriwilian). The Simeh Kuh section (Damghan area, eastern Alborz range) has yielded a rich and diverse blastozoan fauna consisting of fistuliporite (Echinosphaerites, Heliocrinites) and dichoporite rhombiferans (cheirocrinids indet., hemicosmitids indet.), as well as aristocystitid (Sinocystis) and sphaeronitid diploporites (Glyptosphaerites, Tholocystis). Heliocrinites, cheirocrinids, hemicosmitids, Glyptosphaerites, and Tholocystis are reported for the first time in the Ordovician of Iran. A less diverse assemblage was collected in the Shirgesht section (Tabas area, Derenjal Mountains), and represents the first report of Ordovician echinoderms in east-central Iran. The Shirgesht fauna includes fistuliporite rhombiferans (Heliocrinites), aristocystitid and sphaeronitid diploporites. The new Iranian material documents some of the earliest known assemblages of diploporites and rhombiferans, and thus, brings important information on the radiation of these two major blastozoan classes. The two Iranian echinoderm faunas show relatively strong affinities with contemporary faunas from Baltica, the northern Gondwanan margin (e.g. Bohemia, Morocco), Sibumasu, and South China terranes. Aristocystitids suggest stronger links between Iran, and regions from the “Province à Amphorides” (northern Gondwanan margin, Sibumasu, South China). These observations support a palaeogeographical position of Iran at intermediate palaeolatitudes during the early Middle Ordovician, in the periphery of the northeastern Gondwanan margin.

AbstractActinocerid nautiloids from the Lhasai Formation in the Xainza region are studied systematically for the first time. The nautiloids are identified as Middle Ordovician in age based on stratigraphic correlations with those from North China, Sibumasu, North Australia (northern Gondwana), and North America (Laurentia). A cluster analysis shows strong affinities between the actinocerid nautiloids of the Lhasa Terrane and those of the Himalaya, North China, and Sibumasu terranes. Our results support Middle Ordovician paleogeographic reconstructions that place North China rather than South China much closer to Australia. Abstract Detailed studies of upper Cisuralian (i.e., upper lower Permian) fusulinids make it possible to decipher the paleobiogeographic relations of central Iran, as part of the Cimmerian terranes, with other Paleotethyan regions. Two sections, Bagh-e Vang and Shesh Angosht, located in east-central Iran, are revised. Four local fusulinid biozones are distinguished: upper Yakhtashian Pamirina darvasica and Sakmarella spp. Zone, lower Bolorian Misellina (Brevaxina) dyrhenfurthi Zone, mid-Bolorian Cuniculinella Zone, and upper Bolorian Misellina (Misellina) cf. M. (M.) termieri Zone (probably equivalent to the traditional Misellina (Brevaxina) parvicostata Zone). Taxonomically, the main results are as follows: (1) a clarification is provided of the fusulinid genus or subgenus “Cuniculina,” the name of which is pre-occupied, and its synonymy with Cuniculinella; and (2) a lectotype is designated for Darvasites (Alpites) sinensis (Chen, 1934). The mid-Bolorian Cuniculinella Zone is recognized for the first time in Iran. Among the Bolorian fusulinids, Cuniculinella is reported in SE Pamir, Karakoram, central Afghanistan, SW Japan, central Japan, and California, confirming the faunal affinity of the study area in east-central Iran with both Paleotethyan and Panthalassan bioprovinces. Such a distribution is considered to have resulted from combined effects of global warming during the upper Cisuralian, warm oceanic currents along the Paleotethys Ocean, and the northward drift of the Iran block toward lower paleolatitudes.

Recent biostratigraphic studies on the western argentine Puna recorded the Middle Ordovician conodont Baltoniodus cf. B. navis (Lindström) for first time, related to key graptolite taxa of the Central Andean Basin. The analyzed material comes from the lower and middle thirds of the turbidite succession exposed at the Huaytiquina section, Salta Province, which was previously assigned to the “Coquena” Formation. The conodont fauna was recovered from the calcareous sandstone beds intercalated in the middle portion of this unit, and it is composed by species of the genera Baltoniodus, Gothodus, Trapezognathus, Drepanoistodus, Drepanodus, and Protopanderodus, among others. The conodont association indicates a middle Dapingian (Dp2) age, linking the conodonts of the Argentine Puna with those from Baltoscandinavia and South China. The conodont productive levels also contain graptolites assignable to Tetragraptus bigsbyi (Hall) and Isograptus sp. They are located overlying strata bearing Azygograptus lapworthi Nicholson and underlying deposits with Xiphograptus lofuensis (Lee). The graptolite associations are indicating a Dapingian age (Dp1-Dp2) for the lower and middle portions of the “Coquena” Formation. The current findings from the western Puna, as well as the record of Azygograptus lapworthi related to the early Dapingian (Dp1) index conodont Baltoniodus triangularis in the Argentine Cordillera Oriental, are suggesting that a high-resolution correlation between both geomorphological regions is possible. This also documents that the Cordillera Oriental as well as the Puna were connected parts of the Central Andean Basin, during the interval from the Lower Ordovician (Floian) to the Middle Ordovician (Dapingian), instead of corresponding to the source and infill sectors of the basin, respectively. Furthermore, the regional and global correlations are discussed, and the potential of the Ordovician successions of the Argentine Puna for future advances on conodont-graptolite high-resolution biostratigraphy is highlighted.

Rinamba opacicollis Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was collected from Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, India for the first time from the larvae of white stem borer, Xylotrechus quadripes Chevrolat infesting arabica coffee. Its role in the biological or integrated control of X. quadripes remains to be evaluated. White stem borer could be the first host record of this parasitoid all over the world.

Abstract A new dipterous pest is reported, for the first time, on commercial pistachios from Sirjan, Kerman province, Iran. The genus of the insect was determined to be Resseliella Seitner (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Adults are light brown to brown in color and 0.8–1.5 mm in length with females, generally, slightly larger than males. Females have an elongated ovipositor, which is characteristic of the genus. Larvae are orange in color, 2–3 mm in length in the later instars, feed under bark without inducing galls, and cause branch dieback on trees of various ages. Brown to black discolorations are observed on plant tissues under bark where the larvae feed. Infestations observed on current and the previous—year’s growths, ranged from 0.5 to 1.2 cm in diameter, and all located in outer branches. Dry leaves and fruit clusters on infested branches remain attached, which may be used to recognize infestation by the gall midge. Dark-colored, sunken spots with splits on the bark located at the base of the wilted sections of the shoots also are symptoms of Resseliella sp. larval activity. Species-level identification of the gall midge is currently underway.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis that is prevalent worldwide. It is considered endemic in Portugal but few studies have been performed on Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato and their hosts. In this study, CE cysts are reported for the first time in a free-living wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Portugal. The presence of the metacestodes in the liver of the wild boar was identified by morphological features, microscopic examination and molecular analysis. The sequencing of part of the DNA nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS-1) region revealed a G5 genotype that presently corresponds to Echinococcus ortleppi. This is the first report of E. ortleppi in Portugal and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, in Europe. These results suggest that wild boar may be a host of CE, namely, crossing the livestock–wildlife interface, which has important public health implications. Wildlife reservoirs must be taken into account as CE hosts and surveillance of game as well as health education for hunters should be implemented using a One Health approach, with implementation of feasible and tailor-made control strategies, namely, proper elimination of byproducts in the field.

In this brief, the occurrence of Wisteria vein mosaic virus (WVMV) was reported for the first time in Chinese wisteria in the United States of America. Accepted for publication 18 June 2008. Seven flavonoids were isolated from the butanol fraction of the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Cynanchum acutum L. (Asclepiadaceae). All of which have been isolated for the first time from the genus Cynanchum. Their structures were established as quercetin 3-O-β-galacturonopyranoside (1), quercetin 7-O-β-glucopyranoside (2), tamarixtin 3-O-β-galacturonopyranoside (3), kaempferol 3-O-β-galacturonopyranoside (4), 8-hydroxyquercetin 3-O-β-galactopyranoside (5), tamarixtin 3-O-α-rhamnopyranoside (6), and tamarixtin 7-O-α-arabinopyranoside (7) on the basis of their chromatographic properties, chemical and spectroscopic data. The major isolated flavonoids 1, 2 and 3 were found to exhibit significant antioxidant and antidiabetic activities (by measuring blood glucose and insulin levels). This is the first report about the antioxidant and antidiabetic activities of compounds 1 - 3.
