Constructivist teaching in virtual environments places particular emphasis on the use of discussion forums. This article presents the implementation of a concept of constructivist didactics through an e-learning course on the Blackboard platform of the Department of Education at the University of Salzburg, Austria. Students were motivated to build knowledge through their participation in discussion forums on the Blackboard platform. Teachers, in their role of moderators, expected to be able to gradually reduce their presence in the debates.  The challenge was to be able to measure the extent to which this was achieved, considering that thousands of discussion contributions had to be analyzed. This document describes how the discussion lines can be extracted from Blackboard to be used by UCINET software for social network and thus produce a graphic presentation of the discussion sequences.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential role of information literacy (IL) within the changing context of the e-learning environment at the University of Jos in recent years. It focuses and emphasises the role of the University library in facilitating teaching and learning through the use of e-learning platforms in teaching information retrieval skills. The paper aims to identify gaps in students’ information skills that could be addressed through IL instruction. Design/methodology/approach – The study employed a case study research design while the methodology involved the administration of structured questionnaires to the two groups of respondents. Findings – Findings from the study provide useful insights to the skills challenges experienced by students and point to a need for effective collaboration between the library, faculty and management in order to promote a better approach to learning at the institution. Originality/value – By emphasising the role of the library, the paper contributes to previous studies on e-learning at the University and provides a basis for further research in this regard.

Scholarship exploring the makeup, function, and efficacy of collegial governance structures within the context of Canadian higher education is limited and primarily focused on the board or the senate. This paper expands that scholarship by focusing on the governance structures of the university library. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of library councils in Canadian universities and to examine their composition, role, and function as evidenced in their governing documents. Using Karl Mannheim’s document method to analyze the terms of reference of 23 library councils, findings reveal that, overwhelmingly, library councils function as information-sharing and discussion forums rather than decision-making bodies. The paper concludes with a review of progressive language and governance practice as gathered from the document analysis.

Castilla-La Mancha University has decided to implement two tools: WebCT and Moodle, Virtual Campus has emerged: www.campusvirtual.ulcm.es. This paper is dedicated to the analysis of said tool as a primary mode of e-learning expansion in the university environment. It can be used to carry out standard educational university activities in accordance with the guidelines set out by the new European Space for Higher Education. New needs continue to present themselves, not only with regard to the exchange of information and documents, but the complete and integrated management of teaching which is carried out using virtual environments and the Internet: e-learning.

With the wide adoption of instant messaging, online discussion forums, blogs and social networks, online communication has shifted from narration to highly collaborative discussions with multiple authors and discussion threads. However, the theories and methodologies for analyzing this new type of discourse which is different from narration, but also from dialogue, have remained mostly the same. The authors propose a new method for the analysis of this type of discourse, designed especially for multi-party chat conversations where parallel discussion floors and threads exist at the same time. The theoretical underpinning of the inter-animation framework is the detection of links between utterances in order to build a conversation graph that may be used to discover the discussion threads. The framework has been used for analyzing chat conversations of students in Computer Science in order to assess the involvement of each student, the inter-animation of the conversation and the degree of collaborative discourse.

AbstractThis paper presents the findings from a research aiming to study the perception of the knowledge level of the use of e-learning tools among faculty from the University of A Coruna, belonging to both undergraduate and graduate programs. Based on a quantitative methodological approach, differences in knowledge levels are analysed, in order to identify relationships according to personal (sex and age) and professional (teaching experience, university teaching experience using virtual environments and position) features. The results show that the level of knowledge of faculty in e-learning tools is low, being e-mail and chat the utilities that have achieved the highest score. An inferential analysis also shows that untenured younger teachers, with fewer years of experience and using virtual environments for a longer period of time, score higher levels of knowledge of the e-learning tools.Recibido: 16 de agosto de 2010 Aceptado: 24 de enero de 2011

The paper reports the results of an investigation on teaching supported by digital equipments in an Italian university. The opportunity for the study arises from the creation of a particular training activity for first employed teachers (called TFA), and it aims at analyzing the teaching styles adopted by professors when the use of digital technologies is proposed to support didactics. Two main results emerge from the collected data: first, most part of professors have a common view of the use of digital technology in teaching, based on the support that tools can give to their work; second, university professors usually have little or no consciousness of the positive influence that virtual environments can have on teaching and how e-learning can help students in autonomously building and develop their knowledge.

Project management is a term for which there are endless books professing the right way to conduct it. Project management is the systematic application of a standardized approach to conducting a project that increases that project's chances of success. It is known that IT projects are some of those projects most likely to fail, and e-learning projects are no different. The aim of this chapter is to explain how it might be possible to develop a toolkit that could allow e-learning systems of any scale to be developed by those who often have to deliver learning, but may not necessarily have skills in project management or ICT development. It is intended that the proposed toolkit would be valued by other internationally focussed organisations where learning and teaching are a core part of the activities that it conducts, but on a smaller scale. To achieve this, research is proposed at the University of Gloucestershire and Crocels Community Media Group. A pilot study is conducted, and the questionnaire for the study proves to be reliable.
