Effects of Various Parameters on Hydraulic Fracturing Geometry

Abstract We are conducting a theoretical and experimental program on the hydraulic fracturing process. One primary objective of the program is to determine those reservoir properties or characteristics that can control the created fracture geometry. Theoretical models are applied to analyze some aspects of the dynamics of fracturing near material interfaces. The results of these calculations indicate that variation of material properties across a well-bonded interface can cause dynamic material response resulting from the fracturing, which could enhance propagation across the interface. Effects of friction also are analyzed theoretically; however, in the frictional calculations, the wave mechanics are ignored. These calculations show that frictional slip along the interface tends to draw a pressurized fracture toward the interface; this motion tends to reduce the chances of penetrating the material across the frictional interface.Small-scale laboratory experiments are performed to study the effects of frictional characteristics on hydraulic fracture growth across unbonded interfaces in rocks. Various lubricants and mechanical preparations of the interface surfaces are used to vary the coefficients of friction on the interface surfaces. It is found that the frictional shear stress that the interface surface can support determines whether a hydraulically driven crack will cross the interface. Experiments also are being performed to study the effects of pre-existing cracks, which perpendicularly intersect the unbonded interface, on hydraulic crack growth across the interface. It also is found that the presence of these pre-existing cracks impedes the propagation of the hydraulic fracture across the interface. The experimental results on the effects of friction on the interface and the effects of pre-existing cracks on hydraulic fracture penetration of interfaces are consistent with the predictions of the numerical model calculations. Introduction Massive hydraulic fracturing (MHF) is a primary candidate for stimulating production from the tight gas reservoirs in the U.S. Hydraulic fracturing has been widely used as a well completion technique for about 30 years. MHF is a more recent application that differs from hydraulic fracturing in that more fluid and proppant are pumped to create more extensive fractures in the reservoir. Application of MHF to increase production from the tight reservoirs has provided mixed and, in many cases, disappointing results - especially in lenticular reservoirs. For MHF to be successful in enhancing gas production from tight reservoirs, it is important that the fractures be created in productive reservoir rock with large drainage surfaces in the low-permeability material and conductive channels back to the wellbore. We are faced then with the problem of containing fractures in a given formation.Under the U.S. DOE's unconventional gas recovery program, Lawrence Livermore Natl. Laboratory is conducting a research program on the hydraulic fracture process. The general goal of this research is to determine if and to what extent reservoir parameters control the geometry of the created fractures. From theories implied and demonstrated, hydraulic fractures propagate perpendicular to the least principal stress. Hence, except for very shallow applications, the fractures will be primarily vertical, with the azimuthal orientation controlled by the in-situ stress. The vertical gradient in the horizontal stresses also could be a factor in the control of the shape or vertical extent of fractures. SPEJ P. 435^

Abstract Small-scale laboratory experiments were performed to study the growth of hydraulically driven fractures in the vicinity of an unbonded interface in rocks. The purpose was to evaluate under which conditions the hydraulic fractures would cross the interface. The materials used in these studies were Nugget sandstone from Utah (3 to 6% porosity) and Indiana limestone (12 to 15% porosity). The fracturing fluid was oil (viscosity appx. 300 cp) injected into the rock through high-pressure steel tubing. Prismatic blocks of the rock materials to be studied were held adjacent to one another in a hydraulic press so that a normal stress was set up across their mutual interface. Lubricants and surface roughening were used to vary the frictional properties of the interfaces. It was found that as the interface surface friction coefficient was decreased, the normal stress had to be increased for a hydraulic fracture to cross the interface. The frictional shear stress that the interface can support without slippage appears to be critical in determining fracture growth across the interface. Additional experiments were performed to evaluate the coefficient of friction for the different interface surface preparations used. These experiments demonstrated that a variation in the frictional properties along an interfacial surface in the vicinity of hydraulic fracture growth can alter the path of the fracture. The experiments also demonstrated that cracks, which intersect the interface from the side opposite the approaching hydraulic fracture, can impede fracture growth across the interface. In addition to reservoir parameters, the growth of a hydraulically driven crack will be influenced by (1) the manner in which the driving fluid is injected into the rock, (2) the characteristics of the fracturing fluid (i.e., viscosity, presence of proppant, etc.), and (3) any chemical reaction between the fluid and rock. Previous work has shown that crack orientation is controlled primarily by the in-situ or applied stress field, with crack growth oriented perpendicular to the least principal stress. SPEJ P. 21^

To better understand the interaction between hydraulic fracture and oriented perforation, a fully coupled finite element method (FEM)-based hydraulic-geomechanical fracture model accommodating gas sorption and damage has been developed. Damage conforms to a maximum stress criterion in tension and to Mohr–Coulomb limits in shear with heterogeneity represented by a Weibull distribution. Fracturing fluid flow, rock deformation and damage, and fracture propagation are collectively represented to study the complexity of hydraulic fracture initiation with perforations present in the near-wellbore region. The model is rigorously validated against experimental observations replicating failure stresses and styles during uniaxial compression and then hydraulic fracturing. The influences of perforation angle, in situ stress state, initial pore pressure, and properties of the fracturing fluid are fully explored. The numerical results show good agreement with experimental observations and the main features of the hydraulic fracturing process in heterogeneous rock are successfully captured. A larger perforation azimuth (angle) from the direction of the maximum principal stress induces a relatively larger curvature of the fracture during hydraulic fracture reorientation. Hydraulic fractures do not always initiate at the oriented perforations and the fractures induced in hydraulic fracturing are not always even and regular. Hydraulic fractures would initiate both around the wellbore and the oriented perforations when the perforation angle is >75°. For the liquid-based hydraulic fracturing, the critical perforation angle increases from 70° to 80°, with an increase in liquid viscosity from 10−3 Pa·s to 1 Pa·s. While for the gas fracturing, the critical perforation angle remains 62° to 63°. This study is of great significance in further understanding the near-wellbore impacts on hydraulic fracture propagation and complexity.

Directional rupture is one of the most important and most common problems related to rock breaking. The goal of directional rock breaking can be effectively achieved via multi-hole linear co-directional hydraulic fracturing. In this paper, the XSite software was utilized to verify the experimental results of multi-hole linear co-directional hydraulic fracturing., and its basic law is studied. The results indicate that the process of multi-hole linear co-directional hydraulic fracturing can be divided into four stages: water injection boost, hydraulic fracture initiation, and the unstable and stable propagation of hydraulic fracture. The stable expansion stage lasts longer and produces more microcracks than the unstable expansion stage. Due to the existence of the borehole-sealing device, the three-dimensional hydraulic fracture first initiates and expands along the axial direction in the bare borehole section, then extends along the axial direction in the non-bare hole section and finally expands along the axial direction in the rock mass without the borehole. The network formed by hydraulic fracture in rock is not a pure plane, but rather a curved spatial surface. The curved spatial surface passes through both the centre of the borehole and the axial direction relative to the borehole. Due to the boundary effect, the curved spatial surface goes toward the plane in which the maximum principal stress occurs. The local ground stress field is changed due to the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. The propagation direction of the fractures between the fracturing boreholes will be deflected. A fracture propagation pressure that is greater than the minimum principle stress and a tension field that is induced in the leading edge of the fracture end, will aid to fracture intersection; as a result, the possibility of connecting the boreholes will increase.

During horizontal well staged fracturing, there is stress interference between multiple transverse fractures in the same perforation cluster. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation methods are applied in this study. We analysed the mechanism of induced stress interference in a single fracture under different fracture spacings and principal stress ratios. We also investigated the hydraulic fracture morphology and synchronous expansion process under different fracture spacings and principal stress ratios. The results show that the essence of induced stress is the stress increment in the area around the hydraulic fracture. Induced stress had a dual role in the fracturing process. It created favourable ground stress conditions for the diversion of hydraulic fractures and the formation of complex fracture network systems, inhibited fracture expansion in local areas, stopped hydraulic fractures, and prevented the formation of effective fractures. The curves of the maximum principal stress, minimum principal stress, and induced principal stress difference with distance under different fracture lengths, different fracture spacings, and different principal stress ratios were consistent overall. With a small fracture spacing and a small principal stress ratio, intermediate hydraulic fractures were difficult to initiate or arrest soon after initiation, fractures did not expand easily, and the expansion speed of lateral hydraulic fractures was fast. Moreover, with a smaller fracture spacing and a smaller principal stress ratio, hydraulic fractures were more prone to steering, and even new fractures were produced in the minimum principal stress direction, which was beneficial to the fracture network communication in the reservoir. When the local stress and fracture spacing were appropriate, the intermediate fracture could expand normally, which could effectively increase the reservoir permeability.

Abstract With the development of drilling and well completion technologies, multi-staged hydraulic fracturing (MSF) in horizontal wells has established itself as one of the most effective methods for stimulating production in fields with low permeability properties. In Eastern Siberia, this technology is at the pilot project stage. For example, at the Bolshetirskoye field, these works are being carried out to enhance the productivity of horizontal wells by increasing the connectivity of productive layers in a low- and medium- permeable porous-cavernous reservoir. However, different challenges like high permeability heterogeneity and the presence of H2S corrosive gases setting a bar higher for the requirement of the well construction design and well monitoring to achieve the maximum oil recovery factor. At the same time, well and reservoir surveillance of different parameters, which may impact on the efficiency of multi-stage hydraulic fracturing and oil contribution from each hydraulic fracture, remains a challenging and urgent task today. This article discusses the experience of using tracer technology for well monitoring with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing to obtain information on the productivity of each hydraulic fracture separately.

Abstract In-situ stress state plays an important role in controlling fracture growth and containment in hydraulic fracturing managements. It is evident that the mechanical properties, existing stress regime and the natural fracture network of its reservoir rocks and the surrounding formations mainly control the geometry, size and containments of produced hydraulic fractures. Furthermore, the three principal in situ stresses' axes swap directions and magnitudes at different depths giving rise to identifying different mechanical bedrocks with corresponding stress regimes at different depths. Hence predicting the hydro-fractures can be theoretically achieved once all the above data are available. This is particularly difficult in unconventional and tight carbonate reservoirs, where heterogeneity and highly stress variation, in terms of magnitude and orientation, are expected. To optimize the field development plan (FDP) of a tight carbonate gas reservoir in Abu Dhabi, 1D Mechanical Earth Models (MEMs), involving generating the three principal in-situ stresses' profiles and mechanical property characterization with depth, have been constructed for four vertical wells. The results reveal the swap of stress magnitudes at different mechanical layers, which controls the dimension and orientation of the produced hydro-fractures. Predicted containment of the Hydro-fractures within the specific zones is likely with inevitable high uncertainty when the stress contrast between Sv, SHmax with Shmin respectively as well as Young's modulus and Poisson's Ratio variations cannot be estimated accurately. The uncertainty associated with this analysis is mainly related to the lacking of the calibration of the stress profiles of the 1D MEMs with minifrac and/or XLOT data, and both mechanical and elastic properties with rock mechanic testing results. This study investigates the uncertainty in predicting hydraulic fracture containment due to lacking such calibration, which highlights that a complete suite of data, including calibration of 1D MEMs, is crucial in hydraulic fracture treatment.

The Time-Stepped Linear Superposition Method (TLSM) has been used previously to model and analyze the propagation of multiple competitive hydraulic fractures with constant internal pressure loads. This paper extends the TLSM methodology, by including a time-dependent injection schedule using pressure data from a typical diagnostic fracture injection test (DFIT). In addition, the effect of poro-elasticity in reservoir rocks is accounted for in the TLSM models presented here. The propagation of multiple hydraulic fractures using TLSM-based codes preserves infinite resolution by side-stepping grid refinement. First, the TLSM methodology is briefly outlined, together with the modifications required to account for variable time-dependent pressure and poro-elasticity in reservoir rock. Next, real world DFIT data are used in TLSM to model the propagation of multiple dynamic fractures and study the effect of time-dependent pressure and poro-elasticity on the development of hydraulic fracture networks. TLSM-based codes can quantify and visualize the effects of time-dependent pressure, and poro-elasticity can be effectively analyzed, using DFIT data, supported by dynamic visualizations of the changes in spatial stress concentrations during the fracture propagation process. The results from this study may help develop fracture treatment solutions with improved control of the fracture network created while avoiding the occurrence of fracture hits.

Abstract A mathematical model of the fracturing process, coupling the fracture mechanics and fracture propagation with reservoir flow and heat transfer, has been formulated. The model is applicable to fracturing treatments as well as to high leakoff applications such as fractured waterfloods and thermal fractures. The numerical technique developed is capable of simulating fracture extension for reasonably coarse grids, with truncation error being minimized for high leakoff applications when the grid next to the fracture is approximately square. With the aid of the model, a generalization of Carter's propagation formula has been developed that is also valid for high fluid-loss conditions. The capabilities of the model are illustrated by examples of heat transfer and massive-hydraulic-fracturing (MHF) treatment calculation. Introduction Induced fracturing of reservoir rock occurs under many different circumstances. Controlled hydraulic fracturing is an established method for increasing productivity of wells in low-permeability reservoirs. The technology of fracturing and the earlier design methods are reviewed by Howard and Fast.1 In waterflooding, injection pressures also often exceed fracturing pressures. This may result from poor operational practices, but it also could be intended to increase injectivity.2 In heavy oils, such as Alberta oil sands, most in-situ thermal recovery techniques rely on creating injectivity by fracturing the formation with steam.3 Fracturing also is being used as a method for deterining in-situ stresses4 and for establishing communication between wells for extraction of geothermal energy.5,6 Finally, fractures may be produced by explosive treatment or induced thermal stresses (such as in radioactive waste disposal). To date, most of the research has been directed toward the understanding and design of fracture stimulation treatments, with emphasis on predicting fracture geometry.7–11 The influence of fluid flow and heat transfer in the reservoir has been neglected or accounted for by various approximations in these methods. On the other hand, the need for reservoir engineering analysis of fractured wells led to the development of analytical techniques and numerical models for predicting postfracture performance.1 A common feature of all these methods is that they treat only stationary fractures, which therefore must be computed using some of the methods of the first category mentioned earlier. With the high costs associated with MHF,17–19 and with increasing complexity of the treatments, it is becoming important to be able to understand the interaction of the physical mechanisms involved and to improve the designs. This paper presents a numerical model of the fracturing process that simultaneously accounts for the rock mechanics, two-phase fluid flow, and heat transfer, both in the fracture and in the reservoir. The model is capable of predicting fracture propagation, fluid leakoff and heat transfer, fracture closure, cleanup, and postfracture performance. Although the detailed calculations of geometry, proppant transport, etc., have not been included, they can be integrated in a natural way within the present model. Because vertical fractures are prevalent except for very shallow depths, the discussion is limited to vertical fracturing. The paper focuses attention on the formulation of the basic model and the numerical techniques in general. Applications to fracturing treatments and the specific enhancements of the model are described in a more recent paper.20

Abstract We are conducting a U.S. DOE-funded research program aimed at understanding the hydraulic fracturing process, especially those phenomena and parameters that strongly affect or control fracture geometry. Our theoretical and experimental studies consistently confirm the well-known fact that in-situ stress has a primary effect on fracture geometry, and that fractures propagate perpendicular to the least principal stress. In addition, we find that frictional interfaces in reservoirs can affect fracturing. We also have quantified some effects on fracture geometry caused by frictional slippage along interfaces. We found that variation of friction along an interface can result in abrupt steps in the fracture path. These effects have been seen in the mineback of emplaced fractures and are demonstrated both theoretically and in the laboratory. Further experiments and calculations indicate possible control of fracture height by vertical change in horizontal stresses. Preliminary results from an analysis of fluid flow in small apertures are discussed also. Identification of the parameters controlling fracture geometry and the application of this information in designing and performing the hydraulic stimulation treatment is a principal technical problem. Additionally, current measurement technology may not be adequate to provide the required data. and new techniques may have to be devised. Lawrence Livermore Natl. Laboratory has been conducting a DOE-funded research program whose ultimate goal is to develop models that predict created hydraulic fracture geometry within the reservoir. Our approach has been to analyze the phenomenology of the fracturing process to son out and identify those parameters influencing hydraulic fracture geometry. Subsequent model development will incorporate this information. Current theoretical and stimulation design models are based primarily on conservation of mass and provide little insight into the fracturing process. Fracture geometry is implied in the application of these models. Additionally, pressure and flow initiation in the fractures and their interjection with the fracturing process is not predicted adequately with these models. We have reported previously on some rock-mechanics aspects of the fracturing process. For example, we have studied, theoretically and experimentally, pressurized fracture propagation in the neighborhood of material interfaces. Results of interface studies showed that natural fractures in the interfacial region negate any barrier effect when the fracture is propagating from a lower modulus material toward a higher modulus material. On the other hand, some fracture containment could occur when the fracture is propagating from a higher modulus into a lower modulus material. Effect of moduli changes on the in-situ stress field have to be taken into consideration to evaluate fracture containment by material interfaces. Some preliminary analyses have been performed to evaluate how stress changes when material properties change, but we have not evaluated this problem fully. SPEJ P. 321^

Hydraulic fracturing is an important means for the development of tight oil and gas reservoirs. Laboratory rock mechanics experiments can be used to better understand the mechanism of hydraulic fracture. Therefore, in this study we carried out hydraulic fracturing experiments on Triassic Yanchang Formation tight sandstone from the Ordos Basin, China. Sparse tomography was used to obtain ultrasonic velocity images of the sample during hydraulic fracturing. Then, combining the changes in rock mechanics parameters, acoustic emission activities, and their spatial position, we analyzed the hydraulic fracturing process of tight sandstone under high differential stress in detail. The experimental results illuminate the fracture evolution processes of hydraulic fracturing. The competition between stress-induced dilatancy and fluid flow was observed during water injection. Moreover, the results prove that the “seismic pump” mode occurs in the dry region, while the “dilation hardening” and “seismic pump” modes occur simultaneously in the partially saturated region; that is to say, the hydraulic conditions dominate the failure mode of the rock.
