Abstract Introduction: Estimating the dietary and nutrient intake is one of the indirect methods of assessing nutritional status. Diets of adolescent girls in developing countries including Ethiopia are low in diversity, mostly consuming cereals with limited animal source foods and essential nutrients that led to malnutrition. The problem is highly exacerbated at adolescent stage, which exhibited rapid physiological changes. Hence, this study aimed to assess dietary diversity and associated factors among high school late adolescent girls in Tegede district.Methods: A school based cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 systematically selected adolescent girls from January to February 2018 in Tegede district high schools. Dietary diversity score was measured using a validated 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire based on 10 food groups. Binary logistic regression was used and Bi-variable and multivariable analysis were used to identify factors associated with dietary diversity and 95% confidence interval and Odds Ratio (OR) was computed to assess the strength of association. Variables with 0.05 p-value in the multivariable analysis were taken as significantly associated with the dietary diversity score.Result: The proportion of adolescent girls who had adequate dietary diversity was 47.3% [95% CI: (42- 52%)]. Urban residences [AOR=6.60(3.90 11.16)], Living with family [AOR=5.53(3.26 9.37], common decision on food preparation at household level [AOR=1.97(1.14 3.39], school nutrition club member [AOR=2.33(1.34 4.05)] and access to home gardening (AOR=2.69[(1.57 4.62)] were significant determinants of adequate dietary diversity.Conclusion: This study indicated the proportion of adolescent girls who had diversified diet was low. Family residences, Students living status, decision in home food preparation, school nutrition club member and access to home gardening were significant associated factors. These finding underscored that strengthening of school nutritional club and home gardening is mandatory to curb nutritional related problems.

Background. Anemia defined as a low blood hemoglobin concentration is public health importance. The adolescence age group is the most neglected in public health and nutrition research as priorities are usually given to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and their children less than 2 years. Current Ethiopian Food and Nutrition policy included adolescent girls in the most at-risk group for nutritional demands; however, only a few published studies have assessed a deficiency of anemia and associated factors to tackle the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition. Objective. To assess the prevalence of anemia and associated factors among high school adolescent girls in Jimma town. Methods. Data were collected from 528 secondary school adolescent girls by a school-based cross-sectional study design in Jimma town from 1/1/2019 to 1/2/2019, southwest Ethiopia. A multistage sampling technique was used to select the study participants. A portable battery-operated HemoCue Hb 301+ analyzer was used to measure the hemoglobin level, and then reading was classified as normal Hb ≥ 12 g\dl and anemic if the hemoglobin value <12 g/dl based on the WHO 2011 recommended cutoff points after adjustments to altitude was made. Bivariate analysis at p value ≤0.25 was considered as a candidate for multivariable logistic regression. Multivariable logistic regression was done to control for confounders and to identify factors independently associated with anemia. Level of statistical significance was declared at p<0.05. Results. A total of 528 adolescent girls were included in the study yielding a response rate of 95.8%. The prevalence of anemia was found to be 26.7%, 95% CI (22.7, 30.50). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, those living separately from their family (AOR = 4.430, 95% CI (2.20, 8.90)), low dietary diversity score (AOR = 3.57, 95% CI (1.88, 6.75)), menstrual bleeding more than 5 days (AOR = 2.25, 95% CI (1.17, 4.33)), and low economic status (AOR = 2.16, 95% CI (1.17, 4.33)) were positively associated factors with anemia and only having at least a secondary school in mother’s educational status AOR = 0.43, 95% CI (0.18, 0.97) was negatively associated with anemia in the study area. Conclusion. Prevalence of anemia among school adolescent girls was moderate public health importance according to the World Health Organization prevalence estimation of anemia. The living condition of the adolescent girls, dietary diversity score, duration of menses, and low economic status were positive predictor variables, whereas mothers who are being secondary school and above was a protective factor for anemia. Therefore, iron-rich and diversified food consumption should be given attention.

Abstract Background Despite the government of Ethiopia is striving to reduce the prevalence of the undernutrition, thinness among adolescents is one of the challenging nutritional issues in lifecycle approach in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was aimed on determining the prevalence of thinness and its associated factors among adolescent girls attending high schools in Soro District, Hadiya Zone, Southern Ethiopia. Methods Institution based comparative cross sectional study design was employed. The study was conducted from March 15 to April 15, 2019 in high schools of rural and urban settings of Sorro District, Hadiya Zone. Both binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis were done to identify the factors associated with thinness among adolescent girls. Result A total of 414 adolescent girls were participated in this study making the response rate of 100%. The mean age were (17.01± 1.55) and 16.90 ± 1.48, P = 0.437) among adolescent girls in rural and urban high schools respectively. The overall prevalence of the thinness among female adolescents attending high schools in Soro district, Hadiya Zone was 6.8%. There was no statistically significant difference in thinness among adolescent girls in rural and urban high schools. Household wealth tertile AOR: 4.19; 95% C.I: 1.13-15.47, P <0.05, source of drinking water AOR: 2.31; 95% C.I: 1.01-5.30, P <0.05, dietary diversity AOR: 3.99; C.I: 1.15-13.82, P <0.05 and skipping breakfast AOR: 2.97; C.I: 1.28-6.92, P <0.05 were found to be independent factors associated with thinness. Conclusion Being low in household wealth tertile, unprotected source of drinking water, inadequate dietary diversity and skipping breakfast were those factors identified to be independently associated with thinness among female adolescents. Attention should be given from government and nongovernmental organizations by empowering household economic capacity, extending access for pure drinking water and increasing nutrition sensitive agriculture focusing on maintaining food varieties.

Background. Minimum meal frequency, a proxy indicator for a child’s energy requirements, examines the number of times children received foods other than breast milk. Without adequate diversity and meal frequency, infants and young children are vulnerable to malnutrition, especially stunting and micronutrient deficiencies, and increased morbidity and mortality. In Ethiopia, only 45% of children had fed with an age-appropriate minimum meal frequency. Objective. The study was aimed to assess the minimal meal frequency practice, and its associated factors among children aged 6–23 months in Amibara district, North East Ethiopia. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 07–May 23, 2018. Systematic random sampling technique was applied to select 367 children aged 6–23 months. The univariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses model was used to identify potential predictors of meeting minimum meal frequency. All variables with P values <0.25 in the univariable analysis were taken to multivariable analysis, and variables at P values <0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results. The study revealed a prevalence of minimum meal frequency 69.2% (95% CI: 0.64–0.74). Timely initiation of breastfeeding (AOR = 2.2, 95% CI (1.17, 4.18)), current breastfeeding status (AOR = 7.5, 95% CI (3.95, 14.4)), meeting minimum dietary diversity (AOR = 3.7, 95% CI (1.85, 7.44)), and household hunger scale (AOR = 5.3, 95% CI (1.5, 12.5)) were some of the significant predictors to achieve minimum meal frequency. Conclusion. The prevalence of minimum meal frequency practice is low in the study area. Current breastfeeding status, timely initiation of breastfeeding, no/little household hunger scale, and meeting minimum dietary diversity were found as significant predictors for minimum meal frequency practice. Mothers having children aged 6–23 months should be aware and practice appropriate infant and young child feeding practices including timely initiation of breastfeeding, breastfeeding till the child celebrate his/her second birthday, recommended meal frequency, and dietary diversity practice. In addition, households should be assessed and strengthened for food security.

Abstract BackgroundThe term meal frequency is used to describe the adequacy of complementary feedings among children. In the absence of adequate meal frequency young children are susceptible to malnutrition like stunting, wasting, micronutrient deficiencies and associated morbidity and mortality. More half of Ethiopian children did not receive age appropriate minimum meal frequency. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine minimum meal frequency and associated factors among children 6–23 months in Tahtay Michew district, Northern Ethiopia.MethodsA community based cross sectional study was conducted among systematically selected 981 mothers with index children 6–23 month. An interviewer- administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data. 24 hours dietary recalls was used to determine minimum meal frequency. Crude and Adjusted Odds Ratio with the corresponding 95% confidence interval were computed. In the multivariable analysis, variables with less than 0.05 P-value were considered statistically significant.ResultsMinimum meal frequency was 68% [95% CI: 64.9, 70.9%]. Wealth index (AOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.09, 2.61), growth monitoring follow up (AOR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.41, 2.79) and mothers knowledge (AOR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.51, 3.04) were factors significantly associated with minimum meal frequency.Conclusion and recommendationThe proportion of children who received the minimum meal frequency was found low. Improving the wealth status of families and encouraging all mothers to attend growth monitoring follow ups are important for improving meal frequency and dietary diversity.

Abstract Introduction Different foods and food groups are good sources for various macro- and micronutrients. Diversified diet play an important role in both physical and mental growth and development of children. However, meeting minimum standards of dietary diversity for children is a challenge in many developing countries including Ethiopia. Objective To assess dietary diversity and associated factors among children (6–23 months) in Gedieo Zone, Ethiopia. Method Community based cross-sectional study was carried out at Gedieo Zone, Ethiopia, from January to March 15, 2019. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to get a total of 665 children with the age of between 6 and 23 months from their kebeles. Data was collected by using face-to-face interview with structured questionnaire. Data was entered into Epidata version 3.1 and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 for analyses. Variables having p < 0.25 at bivariate analysis were fitted to multivariable analysis. Multivariable logistic regression model was used at 95% confidence interval and with P-Value < 0.05. Bivariate. Result A total of 665 children were participated with response rate of 96.2%. Only 199(29.9%) of children were met the minimum requirements for dietary diversity. Age of children [AOR 4.237(1.743–10.295))], Educational status [AOR 2.864(1.156–7.094)], Number of families [AOR 2.865(1.776–4.619))] and household wealth index [AOR4.390(2.300–8.380)] were significantly associated with Dietary Diversity of children. Conclusion Only, one out of four children aged of 6–23 months attained the minimum dietary diversity score. Children from low socioeconomic status and mothers with no formal educational attainment need special attention to improve the practice of appropriate feeding of children.

Introduction. In Ethiopia, iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is a major public health problem. The most visible effect of IDD is the appearance of goiters, and 28 million people are affected by goiter. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of goiter among high school adolescent girls at Tach Armachiho district, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from October to November 2018. A total of 620 high school adolescent girls were selected using the simple random sampling technique, and structured questionnaires having observational check-list were used for data collection. The presence of goiter was estimated using criteria set by World Health Organization. Iodine content of the salt was estimated by using spot testing kits. Both bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify associated factors. The degree of association between independent and dependent variables was assessed by using odds ratio with 95% confidence interval. Those variables having p value of less than 0.05 in the multivariable analysis were considered as significant factors for goiter. Results. A total of 614 adolescent girls gave a complete response. The prevalence of goiter among adolescent girls was 24.1%. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, age of adolescent girls (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.01–2.46), residence (AOR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.04–3.51), family history (AOR = 4.96, 95% CI: 3.19, 7.72), low dietary diversity (AOR = 8.39, 95% CI: 4.36–16.14), and medium dietary diversity (AOR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.36–3.77) were significantly associated with adolescent girls goiter. Conclusions. Goiter among high school adolescent girls in this study was high. Age of adolescent, residence, family history of goiter, and dietary diversity were statistically significant factors for goiter. Therefore, more emphasis will be given for late adolescent age, having family history of goiter, low dietary diversity, and rural residence to improve the burden of adolescent goiter.

Abstract Background Burnout resulting from long-term and unmanaged workplace stress is high among healthcare professionals, especially surgeons, and affects both individuals and the quality of patient care. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors for burnout among attending general surgeons and to identify possible preventive strategies. Methods A national cross-sectional survey using a 35-item questionnaire was conducted among members of the Turkish Surgical Society. The survey evaluated demographics, professional and practice characteristics, social participation, and burnout as well as interventions to deal with burnout. Burnout was defined as a high score on the emotional exhaustion (EE) and/or depersonalization (DP) subscales. Surgeons with high scores on both the EE and DP and a low score on personal accomplishment (PA) were considered to have severe burnout. Results Six hundred fifteen general surgeons completed the survey. The median EE, DP, and PA scores were 34 (IQR, 20–43), 9 (IQR, 4–16), and 36 (IQR, 30–42), respectively. Overall, the prevalence of burnout and severe burnout were 69.1 and 22.0%, respectively. On multivariable analysis, factors independently associated with burnout were working in a training and research hospital (OR = 3.34; P < 0.001) or state hospital (OR = 2.77; P = 0.001), working ≥ 60 h per week (OR = 1.57; P = 0.046), and less frequent participation in social activities (OR = 3.65; P < 0.001). Conclusions Burnout is an important problem among general surgeons with impacts and consequences for professionals, patients, and society. Considering that burnout is a preventable condition, systematic efforts to identify at-risk populations and to develop strategies to address burnout in surgeons are needed.
