Abstract Polymethylmethacrylate (acrylic) has some important characteristics such as light weight, impact-resistant, and high durability. In a manufacturing industry, acrylic has been widely used as the basic material for billboard products, decorative lights, canopies, and room decorations. This research aims at determining the optimal process parameters of the laser cutting process. The experiment was conducted using multi-response Taguchi method involving four responses, namely processing time, dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, and carbon emissions. The Taguchi method is used to determine the Signal to Noise (SNR) for each response. The Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) method is performed by calculating the normalized weight of SNR for each response to determine the optimal setting level of each factor applied in the experiment. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied to determine the mathematical model based on the results of the experiment to allow the multi-objective optimization and determine the exact value of optimal process parameters which simultaneously compromise all the responses. Based on the results of the experiment, the optimal process parameters are 65% of the laser power, 4 mm/s of the cutting speed, and 4 mm of nozzle distance. Whereas from the results multi-objective optimization, the optimal process parameters are 75% of laser power, 5.9 mm/s of cutting speed, and 3mm of nozzle distance.

AbstractParameter optimization is used in manufacturing as an indicator to produce the best manufacturing product. This paper studies an optimization parameters of CNC laser cutting such as focus of laser beam, pressure cutting gases and cutting speed for reducing variation of surface roughness and cutting rate on material SUS 316L. Based on L9(34) orthogonal array parameters, it is analized using ANOVA based on Taguchi method. In order to optimaze the minimum surface roughness and maximum cutting rate in laser cutting process, it is used Grey relational analysis. The confirmation experiments used to validate the optimal results that has done by Taguchi method. The results show that the Taguchi Grey relational analysis is being effective to optimize the machining parameters for laser cutting process with two responses.

ABSTRACT The application of the low-power CO2 laser-cutting process to fluoroelastomer (FKM), polyamide 6 (PA6), PA6/FKM thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), and their thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) is reported. The main laser process parameters studied were laser power, cutting speed, and material thickness. The value of the top and bottom widths of the slit that were formed during laser cutting (kerf width), melted transverse area, and melted volume per unit time were measured and analyzed. Interestingly, TPE showed a smaller melted area and melted volume per unit time when compared with those values with PA6. Dynamic vulcanization further decreased these values. For example, the melted areas of PA6 and TPE were 510 × 10−3 mm2 and 305 × 10−3 mm2, respectively, which reduced to 238 × 10−3 mm2 for TPV at 40 W laser power. FKM showed the lowest value (melted area of 180 × 10−3 mm2). In addition, the output quality of the cut surface was examined by measuring the root mean square (RMS) roughness of the cut edges and heat-affected zone (HAZ). The obtained results indicated that the dimension of the HAZ and RMS roughness largely decreased in TPE when compared with PA6. For example, the HAZ of PA6 was 700 μm, which decreased to 230 μm for TPE at 40 W laser power. On the other hand, HAZ was nonexistent for FKM. Infrared spectroscopic analysis showed that there was no structural change of TPE or pristine polymers after applying the low-power CO2 laser on the surface of materials. CO2 laser cutting will be a new technique in this industry, and this analysis will assist the manufacturing industry to choose a suitable laser system with exhaustive information of process parameters for cutting or machining of rubber, TPEs, and TPVs.

The main objective of this paper is to investigate and optimize the cutting parameters on multiple performance characteristics in end milling of Aluminium Silicon alloy reinforced with Aluminium Nitride (AlSi/AlN MMC) using Taguchi method and Grey relational analysis (GRA). The fabrication of AlSi/AlN MMC was made via stir casting with various volume fraction of particles reinforcement (10%, 15% and 20%). End milling machining was done under dry cutting condition by using two types of cutting tool (uncoated & PVD TiAlN coated carbide). Eighteen experiments (L18) orthogonal array with five factors (type of tool, cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, and volume fraction of particles reinforcement) were implemented. The analysis of optimization using GRA concludes that the better results for the combination of lower surface roughness, longer tool life, lower cutting force and higher material removal could be achieved when using uncoated carbide with cutting speed 240m/min, feed 0.4mm/tooth, depth of cut 0.3mm and 15% volume fraction of AlN particles reinforcement. The study confirmed that with a minimum number of experiments, Taguchi method is capable to design the experiments and optimized the cutting parameters for these performance characteristics using GRA for this newly develop material under investigation.

Abstract Optimization methods are used to study and survey the optimal values for input factors and effect of optimized parameters on response variables. In this study, the effect of different factors on ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal of water soluble was studied. In this regard, a multi-objective optimization was performed utilizing the Taguchi method based on a grey relational analysis. Optimum levels of factors were determined to optimize three responses simultaneously with grey Taguchi. Meanwhile, grey relational analysis was applied to model and optimize three target responses, namely, CIP removal, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, and sludge to iron ratio. Multi-objective optimization results obtained based on grey relational analysis showed that the optimal value of the input factors were CIP concentration of 100 mg/L, H2O2 concentration of 100 mM, Fe(II) concentration of 10 mM, pH of 3, and a reaction time of 15 min. To confirm the results, the values obtained through a confirmation test were examined. Multi-objective optimization results from process factors were determined by analysis of variance (ANOVA) analysis and grey Taguchi method. Based on ANOVA analysis for the grey relational grade, Fe(II) concentration and H2O2 concentration were found to be the most influencing factors.

The purpose of this paper is to develop 7 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia (7YSZ) thermal barrier coatings by optimization of the atmospheric plasma spraying process parameters. Multiple-performance characteristics, such as coating thickness and surface roughness were considered for optimization. Eighteen experimental runs based on the L18 orthogonal arrays of the Taguchi method were used to show the best conditions among the plasma spraying parameters. Thereafter, best possible process parameters were obtained by the analysis of variance using grey relational analysis as the quality guide. Results signify the application possibility of the grey-based Taguchi technique for continuous development of quality coating in the area of advanced manufacturing technology.
