Abstract Complex mechatronic products include inter-disciplinary, inter-field, and inter-departmental requirement information. Aiming at the low digitization rate of existing product requirement information, a structured and digital product requirement model (RM) is defined. Besides, a collaboration-oriented requirement model mapping and classification method for complex mechatronic products is proposed, which realizes the automatic generation of the domain requirement models and the mapping between the requirement models and knowledge graph, thus improving the digitization rate of the product in the requirement phase. A simulated military plane horizontal tail control system is used as a case study to prove the effectiveness and feasibility of this method. Based on Hoteam PLM8.0 platform, a management architecture and the display path of product requirement model are given, which can provide a reference for the research and development of product lifecycle model management (PLMM) system.

Digitalisation, servitisation, and sustainability are keywords for the current and future development of the manufacturing industry. However, their interaction in the context of an organisation and its supply chain is unclear. This study examines how digital product–service innovation (PSI) or digital servitisation affects sustainability, considering the triple bottom line perspective, as well as identifies the underlying causes. Moreover, this study analyses the role played by supply-chain strategic collaboration, both internal and external to the company, in digital PSI and sustainability. Using a multiple-case study methodology and B2B market perspective, four companies belonging to the capital goods industry were analysed. Our findings indicate that digitalisation is leveraging both basic and advanced services in their impact on economic and environmental sustainability dimensions, while the results are limited in social sustainability. In addition, supply-chain integration is relevant for digital PSI. Internal integration is required for both basic and advanced services, while external integration is especially important in advanced services. We conclude by emphasising that companies should acquire digital capabilities to develop defensive and offensive business strategies that ultimately affect sustainability.

Abstract Motivation Narrative visualization for scientific data explorations can help users better understand the domain knowledge, because narrative visualizations often present a sequence of facts and observations linked together by a unifying theme or argument. Narrative visualization in immersive environments can provide users with an intuitive experience to interactively explore the scientific data, because immersive environments provide a brand new strategy for interactive scientific data visualization and exploration. However, it is challenging to develop narrative scientific visualization in immersive environments. In this paper, we propose an immersive narrative visualization tool to create and customize scientific data explorations for ordinary users with little knowledge about programming on scientific visualization, They are allowed to define POIs (point of interests) conveniently by the handler of an immersive device. Results Automatic exploration animations with narrative annotations can be generated by the gradual transitions between consecutive POI pairs. Besides, interactive slicing can be also controlled by device handler. Evaluations including user study and case study are designed and conducted to show the usability and effectiveness of the proposed tool. Activity diagrams are one of UML behavioural models suitable for system testing because it has the capacity to effectively describe the behaviours of systems under development. In this paper, a technique is proposed that generates test cases from activity diagrams by constructing an activity flow tree (AFT) which stores all the information extracted from the model file of the diagram through the help of a parser. Then, we applied an algorithm to generate test cases from the constructed tree. Test cases were generated based on the elements of activity diagrams such as activity sequences, associated descriptions and conditions. The proposed technique generated accurate test cases that completely tallied with the modeled requirements in the diagram. We utilized all-paths, basic pair paths, conditions, branches and transition criteria for generating test cases using ATM withdrawal operation software as a case study.

For the validation of vehicular Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS), engineers are currently required to analyze disperse information regarding technical requirements, standards and datasheets. Moreover, an enormous effort takes place to elaborate testing plans that are representative for most EDS possible configurations. These experiments are followed by laborious data analysis. To diminish this workload and the need for physical resources, this work reports a simulation platform that centralizes the tasks for testing different EDS configurations and assists the early detection of inadequacies in the design process. A specific procedure is provided to develop a software tool intended for this aim. Moreover, the described functionalities are exemplified considering as a case study the main wire harness from a commercial vehicle. A web-based architecture has been employed in alignment with the ongoing software development revolution and thus provides flexibility for both, developers and users. Due to its scalability, the proposed software scheme can be extended to other web-based simulation applications. Furthermore, the automatic generation of electrical layouts for EDS is addressed to favor an intuitive understanding of the network. To favor human–information interaction, utilized visual analytics strategies are also discussed. Finally, full simulation workflows are exposed to provide further insights on the deployment of this type of computer platforms.

Robotics has become a rapidly emerging branch of science, addressing the needs of humankind by way of advanced technique, like artificial intelligence (AI). This chapter gives detailed explanation about the background knowledge required in implementing the software robots. This chapter has an in-depth explanation about different types of software robots with respect to different applications. This chapter would also highlight some of the important contributions made in this field. Path planning algorithms are required for performing robot navigation efficiently. This chapter discusses several robot path planning algorithms which help in utilizing the domain knowledge, avoiding the possible obstacles, and successfully accomplishing the tasks in lesser computational time. This chapter would also provide a case study on robot navigation data and explain the significant of machine learning algorithms in decision making. This chapter would also discuss some of the potential simulators used in implementing software robots.

Researchers have proposed various models for assessing design alternatives for process plant retrofits. Due to the considerable engineering effort involved, no such models exist for the great majority of brownfield process plants, which have been in operation for years or decades. This article proposes a semi-automatic methodology for generating a digital twin of a brownfield plant. The methodology consists of: (1) extracting information from piping and instrumentation diagrams, (2) converting the information to a graph format, (3) applying graph algorithms to preprocess the graph, (4) generating a simulation model from the graph, (5) performing manual expert editing of the generated model, (6) configuring the calculations done by simulation model elements and (7) parameterizing the simulation model according to recent process measurements in order to obtain a digital twin. Since previous work exists for steps (1–2), this article focuses on defining the methodology for (3–5) and demonstrating it on a laboratory process. A discussion is provided for (6–7). The result of the case study was that only few manual edits needed to be made to the automatically generated simulation model. The paper is concluded with an assessment of open issues and topics of further research for this 7-step methodology.
