Abstract This study assessed the growth and feed intake performances of Galla goats and their crosses with local goats fed on Brachiaria grass cultivar Mulato II and Napier grass mixed with Leucaena leaf meal. Twenty-four Galla goats and 24 crossbred goats were selected and divided into four groups of three goats for each genotype and put in a partitioned house for goats’ stall feeding. Goats from each group were identified using ear tags, randomised and then allotted one of the dietary treatments. Feed rations used as treatments were hay of Mulato II, silage of Napier grass, Mulato II, ML (67% Mulato + 33% Leucaena leaf meal) and NL (67% Napier grass + 33% Leucaena leaf meal). Individual goat weights were taken on a weekly basis. Feed samples of each diet were collected every week and analysed for nutritive values. The chemical composition of feed showed significant differences (P<0.05) among diets. Absolute and relative nutrient intakes showed that Galla goat had a higher DM intake of NL compared to other diets and in crossbreds. Galla goats had a higher feed conversion ratio for DM from Napier and NL diets. Mulato II increased body weight up to 29% and 47% over Napier grass in crossbreds and pure Galla goats, respectively. The findings suggest that Mulato II could be a better feed resource for growing goats. Further studies should be conducted by increasing the levels of Leucaena leaf-meal in the diets and determine nitrogen retention and quality of meat under the same feeding regime.

ABSTRAK. Performa produksi, jumlah folikel dan berat organ reproduksi diukur pada 40 ekor ayam petelur yang diberi perlakuan penambahan 5% tepung daun tumbuhan obat yaitu daun Katuk (5%TDK), daun Marigold (5%TDM), daun Senduduk (5%TDS) ke dalam ransum. Variabel yang diamati meliputi konsumsi ransum, persentase produksi telur, egg mass production, konversi ransum, berat dan panjang organ reproduksi dan jumlah folikel. Penambahan tepung tanaman obat tidak mempengaruhi konsumsi ransum ayam petelur. Hasil perhitungan persentase produksi telur mingguan menunjukkan hasil yang sama pada semua perlakuan. Perlakuan 5% tepung tanaman herbal tidak mempengaruhi egg mass production. Konversi ransum pada semua kelompok perlakuan tanaman obat adalah sama. Pemberian tepung tanaman obat di dalam ransum petelur tidak berpengaruh nyata pada jumlah folikel. Berat dan panjang organ reproduksi tidak dipengaruhi oleh perlakuan tepung tanaman obat. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penambahan 5% tepung daun Katuk, Marigold dan Senduduk dalam ransum menunjukkan konsumsi ransum, persentase produksi telur, egg mass production, konversi ransum, bobot dan panjang oviduk, berat ovarium dan jumlah folikel yang sama pada ayam petelur.         (Efficacy of medicinal plants on production performance and reproductive characteristics of laying hens) ABSTRACT. Efficacy of Katuk leaf meal, Marigold leaf meal and Senduduk leaf meal on production performance and reproductive characteristics were evaluated. Forty layers aged 32 weeks were distributed into 4 dietary treatments. The layers were housed in individual battery. One-way ANOVA treatment arranged in a Completely Randomized Design was used in this experiment. Dietary treatments were P0 (control without medicinal leaf meal), P1 (diet with 5% Katuk leaf meal), P2 (diet with 5% Marigold leaf meal), P3 (diet with 5% Senduduk leaf meal). This research measured feed intake, egg production, percentage of egg production, feed conversion ratio, number of follicles, weight of ovary, weight and length of oviduct as parameters. Significant results were tested by Duncan Multiple Range Test. The result showed that dietary treatments of medicinal leaf did not affect feed intake and feed conversion ratio of layers. Egg production percentage and egg mass production, the number of follicles, and length and weight of oviduct were similar of all medicinal leaf meal treatments. It can be concluded that feeding medicinal leaf meal did not affect production performance, number of follicles and weight of reproductive organs.

Eighty black Nera cockerel chicks were randomly alloted to four dietarey treatmants containing 0, 10, 20 and 30% kolanut husk meal (KHM) for twelve weeks. Significant differences (P<0.05) in feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio were observed. Dietary inclusion of KHM depressed (P<0.05) growth rate feed conversion ratio and nutrition uilization of cockerels birds. There were linear reduction (P>0.05) in nitrogen retention and apparent crude fibre digestibility (ACFD) of  cockerels birds at each incremental KHM dietary levels. This indicated that KHM could be effeciently utilized by cockerels up to 205 dietary level above which the depression in growth rate occurs.

Means of cutting down cost of feed resources in order to bridge the wide gap between demand and supply of animal protein in livestock production is a great concern in the poultry industry. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding diets containing soaked and fermented Baobab seed meal (BSM) on the growth performance of broiler starter chicks. A total of 150, one-day old chicks were randomly distributed into five treatment groups. Treatments were replicated three times with 10 chicks per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). The dietary groups were designated as T1 for control (0 % BSM), T2 (7.5 % SBSM), T3 (15.0% SBSM), T4 (22.5% FBSM) and T5 (30 % FBSM). Parameters monitored include final weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, feed cost per kg gain (N) and mortality (%) The experiment lasted for 4 weeks. The results showed that the dietary treatments had significant (P<0.05) effect on all the parameters measured. Final weight and total weight gain were similar and significantly (P<0.05) higher in birds fed diets T2 and T4 when compared to other dietary treatments. However, birds in T5 group had the least significant (P<0.05) values 366.67 and 217.34 g/bird respectively. Daily weight gain (7.76 g/bird/day), total and daily feed intake (873.33 g and 31.19 g/bird/day) of birds followed similar trend and were significantly (P<0.05) lower in T5 group compared to other treatments. Feed conversion ratio of birds fed diet T5 had significantly (P<0.05) higher value (4.29) when compared to those in other treatment groups. Feed cost per kg gain (N) was significantly (P<0.05) lower and similar in birds fed T2, T3 and T4 when compared to values obtained in the control group (N253.27) and T5 (N 327.52). Mortality (%) only occurred in birds fed T5. It was therefore concluded that inclusion of 22.5% fermented baobab seed meal in broiler diets improved performance and had no negative effect on the health status of birds.     Des moyens de réduire le coût des ressources alimentaires afin de combler le defi posé à cause de la demande et l'approvisionnement en protéines animales dans la production animale est une grande préoccupation dans l'industrie avicole. Cette étude a été menée pour étudier l'effet des regimes alimentaires contenant de la farine de graines de baobab trempée et fermentée (le 'BSM') sur les performances de croissance des poussins de départ. Un total de 150 poussins âgés d'un jour ont été répartis au hasard en cinq groupes de traitement. Les traitements ont été répliqués trois fois avec 10 poussins par réplique dans une conception complètement randomisée (le 'CRD'). Les groupes diététiques ont été désignés comme T1 pour le contrôle (0% BSM), T2 (7,5% SBSM), T3 (15,0% SBSM), T4 (22,5% FBSM) et T5 (30% FBSM). Les paramètres surveillés comprennent le poids final, le gain de poids, la prise alimentaire, le taux de conversion alimentaire, le coût de l'alimentation par kg de gain (N) et la mortalité (%). L'expérience a duré 4 semaines. Les résultats ont montré que les traitements diététiques avaient un effet significatif (P <0,05) sur tous les paramètres mesurés. Le poids final et le gain de poids total étaient similaires et significativement (P<0,05) plus élevés chez les oiseaux nourris avec les régimes T2 et T4 par rapport aux autres traitements diététiques. Cependant, les oiseaux du groupe T5 avaient les valeurs les moins significatives (P <0,05) 366,67 et 217,34 g / oiseau respectivement. Le gain de poids quotidien (7,76 g / oiseau / jour), l'apport alimentaire total et quotidien (873,33 g et 31,19 g / oiseau / jour) des oiseaux ont suivi une tendance similaire et étaient significativement (P<0,05) inférieurs dans le groupe T5 par rapport aux autres traitements. La mortalité (%) n'est survenue que chez les oiseaux nourris au T5. Il a donc été conclu que l'inclusion de farine de graines de baobab fermentée à 22,5% dans les régimes alimentaires des poulets de chair améliorait les performances et n'avait aucun effet négatif sur l'état de santé des oiseaux.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of Ocimum gratissimum leaf meal supplementation on the performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of broiler chicken. One hundred and fifty day old Abhor Acre strains of broiler birds were assigned to five dietary treatments with thirty birds per treatment in a completely randomized design. Ocimum gratissimum leaf meal at 0g, 100g, 200g, 300g and 400g per 100kg of feed was added to the diets. The experiment lasted for seven weeks. Data on feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio were collected. Two birds per replicate were randomly selected, weighed, slaughtered and properly dressed for carcass parameters such as live weight, plucked weight, dressing percentage, head, neck, wing weight, thigh weight, drumstick, organ weight and sensory evaluation was carried out. Five layer diets were formulated containing 0.5,10, 15 and 20% Anthonotha macrophylla seed meal which replaced equivalent proportion of groundnut cake. One hundred and eighty Babcock brown layers already 3 months in lay were randomized into 5 groups and each group was fed one of the experimental diets for 84 days. The hens were examined for performance using body weight. teed intake, henday egg production, egg weight and feed conversion ratio. The interior quality of Eggs were also assessed. Total feed intake ranged from 9.27 to 10.97kg, average daily feed intake, from 110.32 to 130.54 g/bird/day, hen-day egg production, from 48.88% to 79.11% and feed conversion ratio, from 1.87 to 2.15. Statistical analysis showed that total feed intake,  average daily feed intake and hen - day egg production were similar across the dictary treatments up to the 15% level of inclusion, but were significantly depressed (P<0.05) at the 20% inclusion level.  However, diet had no significant effect on final body weight and average egg weight and feed conversion ration (P>0.05). Similarly results on egg quality showed no significant effect (P>0.05) on albumen index, yolk index, yolk colour, Haugh unit and shell thickness. Based on these results, it was concluded that Anthonotha macrophylla seed meal can be incorporated into layer diets up to 15%, inclusion level without incurring a depression in performance Layer diets containing this meal ingredient had no deleterious effect on egg quality.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of AZOMITE® as source of natural minerals on growth performance of commercial broiler. A total of 1,020 day-old Cobb 500 male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 5 dietary treatments with 6 replications per treatment having 34 chicks in each pen. The five dietary treatments were: (i) basal diet without AZOMITE®, (ii) basal diet with 0.25% AZOMITE®, (iii) basal diet with 0.50% AZOMITE® which was recommended by manufacturer, (iv) basal diet with 0.75% AZOMITE® and (v) basal diet with 1.0% AZOMITE®. Broilers were reared in open-sided gable type house for a period of 32 days. Results showed that the supplementation of AZOMITE® had significant effect on growth performance (p<0.01) of broilers. Live body weight (LBW), body weight gain (BWG), average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), European efficiency factor (EEF) and gain cost of the birds fed various levels of AZOMITE® were significantly improved as compared to the control. Meat characteristics results indicated that the treatments had no significant effect on dressing percent, thigh, drumsticks and breast percentage among the dietary groups. Taken together, it may be concluded that the supplementation of AZOMITE® in commercial broiler at 0.50 to 1.0% improved live weight, feed intake and feed conversion ratio of commercial broilers. A 12-week study was conducted to determine the effect of graded levels of raw tallow seed meal (RTSM) on growth performance, haematological and biochemical parameters and organoleptic qualities of growing rabbits. Five experimental diets were compounded to contain 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% RTSM replacing the palm kernel cake weight for the weight designated as T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5, respectively. Forty-five (45) weaned rabbits between 5 and 6 weeks with an average body weight ranging from 500 to 600 g of mixed breeds and sexes (females and males) were randomly allocated to the five (5) dietary treatments in the randomized complete block design with nine (9) rabbits per treatment replicated three (3) times with three (3) rabbits each. Data were collected on feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, nutrient digestibility, some haematological and biochemical parameters and organoleptic qualities of the rabbits. The feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio were significantly (P<.005) affected by the dietary treatments. The rabbits fed diets T1, T2 and T3 recorded similar feed intake (62, 66.95, and 66.50 g), total weight gain (1328.73, 1320.44, and 1323.49 g) and feed conversion ratio (3.92, 4.26, and 4.22) which were significantly better than those observed for the rabbits fed diets T4 and T5. The nutrient digestibilities of the rabbits fed the experimental diets were also significantly (P<0.05) affected. The rabbits fed diet T2 had better fiber digestibility (47.05%) compared to other treatment groups. Ether extract digestibility was observed to be better in the group of rabbits fed diets T1, T2 and T3, respectively. Some of the other nutrients in the group of rabbits fed diets T3, T4 and T5 were similarly digested. The haematological parameters were observed to be depressed as the level of RTSM increased in the diets. Packed cell volume, red blood cells and white blood cells were observed to reduce from 37.69 to 21.22%, 4.14 to 2.18 g/dl and 4.98 to 3.02 g/dl. The biochemical parameters indicated a similar trend as that of the haematological parameters. Total protein, glucose and urea reduced from 6.15 to 4.63 g/dl, 5.15 to 3.80 g/dl and 7.76 to 4.00 mmol/l. The result of the organoleptic qualities indicated a non-significant (P>0.05) difference except for the juiciness which was significantly (P<0.05) high in the rabbits fed diets T1 (5.90), T3 (5.65), and T4 (5.90), respectively. In conclusion, up to 50% of RTSM can be included in the diets of rabbits without adverse effects on productive performance, nutrient utilization, blood parameters and organoleptic qualities.

To investigate the effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) essential oil (TEO) or increasing inclusion of a prebiotic (TechnoMOS®) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of Ross 308 broilers, 400 one-day-old male broilers (43.5 g, as mean of body weight) were placed in 20 pens (2.0 × 1.0 m, with a floor area of 0.10 m2 per bird) in groups of 20, and each pen cage was assigned to a specific dietary treatment (four replicates per each one). The dietary treatments included basic diet (no additive; CTR), basic diet including 0.025%, 0.075%, or 0.125% of TechnoMOS® (MOS025, MOS075, and MOS125, respectively), or basic diet including 0.075% thyme extract (TEO075). All dietary treatments were offered from the beginning of the study until the end of the trial. There were no effects of MOS or TEO on carcass characteristics. No significant effects of treatment on weight gain were obtained on a week-by-week basis; however, CTR birds gained less weight during the grower phase and overall compared with MOS birds. The same contrast for feed intake revealed that CTR birds had greater feed intake than MOS birds during both the grower phase and overall (492.18 g and 486.35 g, respectively). In conclusion, treated groups showed an improved feed conversion ratio.

Apart from the use of sour sop (Annonamuricata) as food crop, the leaves, seeds andmany of the plant parts are used in traditional medicine for treatment of kidney problems, fever with antispasmodic, antidysenteric, and parasiticidal activity. Thus, a 63 day study was conducted to evaluate the feed potentials and effect of sour sop (Annona muricata) leafmeal (AMLM) on growth performance ofWest African dwarf (WAD) weaned goats. Nine (9)WAD goats were grouped into three and assigned diets containing 0%, 10%, and 20%Annona leaf meal.Formulated feedswere offered at3%of bodyweight in themorning andgmelina leaves later in the day. Feed intake was recorded daily while weight gain was taken weekly and feed conversion ratio was calculated to determine growth performance. Proximate composition of the leaf meal was determined according AOAC, (2000). The result showed high metabolisable energy, dry matter, ash, and crude fiber of 2563.5Kcal/Kg, 93.91%, 10.62% and 16.20% respectively,moderate level of nitrogen free extract (42.39%) and crude protein (20.41%) which is an indication thatAnnonamuricata leafmeal could be a suitable feedstuff for ruminant animals. The performance results showed that feed intake was significantly higher in group 1(0%AMLM) and lower in group 3(20%AMLM). However, no significant (P>0.05) differences were observed among the groups on weight gain and feed conversion ratio proving that the diet treatment had no significant effect on the goats. Therefore,Annona muricata leafmeal could be an alternative to high-cost goat nutritionwithout compromising growth performance.

The study was conducted to investigate the growth performance of broiler birds fed varying dietary levels of Artemisia annua. A total of 90 broiler chickens (Arbor Acre strain) were used. The study lasted for eight weeks. At the starter phase, 90 fourteen-day old broiler chicks were randomly allocated to five groups and fed starter diets containing five levels of A. annua (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g per kg of diet, respectively). At the finisher phase, 90 forty-two-day old finisher broilers were randomly allocated to five groups and fed finisher diets containing five levels of A. annua (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g per kg of diet, respectively). Each group was replicated three times with six birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Parameter measured includes body weight, average daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio. The result of the proximate composition showed that Artemisia annua leaf meal contained 10.50% moisture, 26.27% crude protein, 5.00% crude fibre, 9.60% ash, 2.00% ether extract and 46.63% nitrogen-free extract. The result showed that at the starter phase, the inclusion of varying levels of A. annua in the starter diets had significant (p < 0.05) effect on the final body weight (FBW) of birds. Birds fed diet 2 (diet containing 50g of A. annua per kg diet) had significantly (p<0.05) higher final body weight (FBW) value (1115.00g) than those fed diet 5 (diet containing 200g of A. annua per kg of diet) which had FBW value of 915.00g. Dietary treatments had no significant (p > 0.05) effect on average daily feed intake (ADFI), total weight gain (TWG), average daily weight gain (ADWG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficient ratio(PER) of the birds. At the finisher phase, significant (p < 0.05) differences existed among treatments in ADWG, TWG, FBW and ADFI. Birds fed diet containing 50 g A. annua per kg diet had significantly (p < 0.05) higher ADWG, TWG and FWG values than those fed the control diet. However, no significant (p > 0.05) differences existed among treatments in FCR and PER. It is concluded that A. annua leaf meal can be included in the diet of starter and finisher broilers at 200g per kg of diet without any deleterious effect on the growth performance of birds.
