Abstract Little is known about the distribution of N and P in Pisha sandstone soils from different types of areas. In this study, three typical areas in this region, which included the Er Laohu small watershed (soil-covered area), the Tela small watershed (sand-covered area), and the Shibu Ertai small watershed (bare area), were chosen as experimental objects. A total of 27 soil sections were constructed (Took three parts in the upper, middle and lower of each watershed, respectively), and 486 soil samples were taken from different slope positions and slope directions. Bare Pisha sandstone had the highest mean TN concentration of 0.53 g/kg, which was about 45.06–45.30% higher than soil-covered and sand-covered Pisha sandstone. Sand-covered Pisha sandstone had a lower TP concentration of 37.93–40.62% than the bare (5.04 g/kg) and soil-covered (4.64 g/kg) Pisha sandstone. The concentration of AN in the bare Pisha sandstone was 23.98 mg/kg, which was about 2.85-3.85 times higher than that in the sand-covered and soil-covered Pisha sandstone. Ni concentration in bare Pisha sandstone (5.14 mg/kg) was approximately 3–4 times higher compared to soil-covered and sand-covered Pisha sandstone. The AP concentration in soil-covered Pisha sandstone was 7.56 mg/kg, which was about 68–72.21% higher than that in bare and sand-covered Pisha sandstone areas. Overarchingly, our results suggest that different Pisha sandstone types and slope positions significantly affect the spatial distribution of N and P. That has created a greater obstacle for the local population to carry out agricultural activities in the Pisha sandstone region.

This chapter, by following the course of military actions in Lithuania in 1919, explores the emergence of various military and paramilitary groups that engaged in different types of violence. The focus here is on the entanglement of three types of actors: those that performed state-sanctioned violence; those that acted as semi-independent paramilitary agents, and those that engaged in ethnically or socially motivated violence on a local level. The ability of the Lithuanian government to survive the series of military engagements in 1919 enhanced its legitimacy among the local population, and laid the foundation for a modern Lithuanian identity among the masses. Yet the new state and national identity were shaped in a continuous cycle of violence, social strife, mobilization, and militarization of society.

ABSTRACTRecurrent treatments withBacillus thuringiensissubsp.israelensisare required to control the floodwater mosquitoAedes vexansthat breeds in large numbers in the wetlands of the Bolle di Magadino Reserve in Canton Ticino, Switzerland. Interventions have been carried out since 1988. In the present study, the spatial distribution of restingB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisspores in the soil was measured. TheB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisconcentration was determined in soil samples collected along six transects covering different elevations within the periodically flooded zones. A total of 258 samples were processed and analyzed by quantitative PCR that targeted an identical fragment of 159 bp for theB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensis cry4Aaandcry4Bagenes.B. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisspores were found to persist in soils of the wetland reserve at concentrations of up to 6.8 log per gram of soil. Continuous accumulation due to regular treatments could be excluded, as the decrease in spores amounted to 95.8% (95% confidence interval, 93.9 to 97.7%). The distribution of spores was correlated to the number ofB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensistreatments, the elevation of the sampling point, and the duration of the flooding periods. The number ofB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensistreatments was the major factor influencing the distribution of spores in the different topographic zones (P< 0.0001). These findings indicated thatB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisspores are rather immobile after their introduction into the environment.

This research combines a hydrological and pedological approach to better understand the spatial distribution of contaminated soils along the Massawippi River (southern Québec, Canada). This river crosses through former mines, which were some of the largest copper mining areas in North America from 1865 to 1939. To determine the spatial distribution and concentration of the metal elements, soil samples were taken in each flood recurrence zone appearing on official flood zone maps. The maximum values obtained for Cu and Pb are 380 and 200 mg kg−1, respectively, for the soils in the frequent flood zones (FFzs), while the values for soils in the moderate flood zones (MFzs) range from 700 to 540 (Cu) and 580 to 460 mg kg−1 (Pb). Contamination extends through several kilometers of the former mining sites (Eustis and Capleton), and concentration of metals in alluvial soils is slightly higher near the mine sites.

ABSTRACTDocumented evidence of fungi associated with Mesozoic ferns is exceedingly rare. Three different types of fungal remains occur in a portion of a small, permineralised fern stem of uncertain systematic affinities from the Triassic of Germany. Exquisite preservation of all internal tissues made it possible to map the spatial distribution of the fungi in several longitudinal and transverse sections. Narrow, intracellular hyphae extend through the entire cortex, while wide hyphae are concentrated in the cortical intercellular system adjacent to the stele and leaf traces. Hyphal swellings occur in the phloem and adjacent cortex, while moniliform hyphae (or chains of conidia) are present exclusively in parenchyma adjacent to the stele. No host response is recognisable, but host tissue preservation suggests that the fern was alive during fungal colonisation. The highest concentration of fungal remains occurs close to the stele and leaf traces, suggesting that the fungi either utilised the vascular tissues as an infection/colonisation pathway or extracted nutrients from these tissues. This study presents the first depiction of fungal distribution throughout a larger portion of a fossil plant. Although distribution maps are useful tools in assessing fungal associations in relatively small, fossil plants, preparing similar maps for larger and more complex fossils would certainly be difficult and extremely arduous.

Abstract. We identify and map traces of subglacial meltwater drainage around the former Keewatin Ice Divide, Canada from ArcticDEM data. Meltwater tracks, tunnel valleys and esker splays exhibit several key similarities, including width, spacing, their association with eskers and transitions to and from different types, which together suggest they form part of an integrated drainage signature. We collectively term these features &amp;apos;meltwater corridors&amp;apos; and propose a new model for their formation, based on observations from contemporary ice masses, of pressure fluctuations surrounding a central conduit. We suggest that eskers record the imprint of a central conduit and meltwater corridors the interaction with the surrounding distributed drainage system. The widespread aerial coverage of meltwater corridors (5–36 % of the bed) provides constraints on the extent of basal uncoupling induced by basal water pressure fluctuations and variations in spatial distribution and evolution of the subglacial drainage system, which will modulate the ice dynamic response.

Initial nitrate-nitrogen content of the soil gave a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.93 with yields and with total nitrogen uptake of Brussels sprouts plants (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera DC., Jade Cross). Soil nitrogen extracted with 0.01 M NaHCO3 gave r values of 0.76 with yields and 0.75 with nitrogen uptake. Nitrate incubation results from leached, moist soil samples gave r values of 0.59 with yields and 0.56 with nitrogen uptake. However, air-drying of soil samples prior to leaching and incubation resulted in r values of only 0.15 and 0.11 with yields and nitrogen uptake, respectively. Available nitrogen determined by incubation without previous leaching of the soil samples gave high r values because of the influence of the initial nitrate nitrogen in the soil.

This paper deals with a possible interpretation value of biochemical methods in comparison with the classic tools of geoarchaeology for the evaluation of formation processes. Organic rich layers from the archaeological site Brandýs nad Labem-Vrábí were tested with the aim to determine the origin of several different types of soil organic material by analyzing the content of different sugars. The studied soil body showed signs of cultural layer, redeposited soils, and in situ developed soil. The analysis of different sugars was highlighted: soil samples taken from these layers were analyzed to assess the ratios of mannose + galactose to arabinose + xylose, and of rhamnose + fucose to arabinose + xylose, content of Corg and different nitrates, as well as different rates of absorbance. The results show that the interpretation values of polysaccharides evaluation didn’t bring significant results itself, but in combination with classical tools of geoarchaeology may bring interpretable and new results.

This chapter turns to the Protestant community and examines paramilitary punishment attacks (PPAs) perpetrated by Loyalist paramilitaries. Although the violent methods used by Republican and Loyalist armed groups are similar, their motivation is somewhat different. In particular, the supply of PPAs carried out by Loyalist paramilitaries outweighs the demand from the local population. In this case, PPAs are used against delinquent young people, but they are also used to discipline members and settle scores within and between groups to a greater extent than in the Republican case. The chapter also examines antisocial behavior among young people in Protestant areas and finds differences between Protestants and Catholics in the specific types of offending. The explanation for this variation lies in the structure and number of Loyalist armed groups and the different types of opportunities for community recognition, which the respective political and paramilitary organizations offer to them.
