The article is devoted to the analysis of the Buddhist monastic history in Northwest China, described in the treatise of the Buryat scholar Kensur Nawang Nima “The lamp of collected quotations from classical works of the Buddhist history”. This work is an example of Buddhist historical thought, which was developed in the traditional culture of the Buryats in the pre-revolutionary period. The authors of the article claim that “The lamp of collected quotations” has a specificity of presentation, determined by the author’s personality, historical and cultural circumstances. This specificity is related to the post-classical period of the history of Tibetan scholasticism, within which the work was written. Buddhist historical thought tried to understand the results of the most important stages of the Buddhist history in the vast region based on the works of previous generations. The treatise can be described as a scholastic work and Nawang Nima as an outstanding scholar and theorist of his time. Analysis of the structure of the work has showed that the author focused primarily on the history of the Geluk School, which he belonged to. Due to this specificity, most of the text is devoted to the biography of the founder of the school Je Tsongkhapa. The volume of work directly related to the history of Buddhist monasteries in northwestern China is extremely small. Nawang Nima describes the Genesis of the Geluk Buddhist monasteries: Chacung (bya khyung), Kumbum (sku ‘bum byams pa gling), Gonlung (dgon lung byams pa gling), Ganden (lga ldan dam chos gling), Rongwo (rong bo dgon chen), Labrang (bla brang bkra shis ‘khyil), Chone (сone dgon chen), etc. This fragment of the work “The lamp of collected quotations from classical works of the Buddhist history” is a fundamental historical description of the most important religious and cultural processes in the territories of Inner Asia in the period from the 19th up to the 20th century. Keywords: Buddhism, history, monastery, Buryatia, Tibet, Northwest China, Nawang Nima

This paper analyses the state of contemporary Polish historiography about the history of Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century, a very dramatic period in Polish-Ukrainian relations, with a high emotional charge, influenced by political and ideological elements. Olha Morozova’s book is an important voice in the historiographic Polish-Ukrainian discourse. The author indicates different aspects linking the history of both nations, but without passing over the difficult or even dramatic moments of their common history. The book enriches contemporary knowledge about Polish historical thought, prompts Ukrainian and Polish historians to reflect and perhaps reorient their findings and assessments. Olha Morozova takes the position of continuing the calm Polish-Ukrainian dialogue, eliminating the emotional and ideological elements as much as possible.

Jahrhundert verbirgt. This article sketches the first part of a research project centred on Erwin Panofsky’s article»Renaissance and Renascences« from 1944. The analysis of the text focuses on Panofsky’shistorical formula of the so-called ›principle of disjunction‹ for the reception of antiquity andsheds light on the internal understanding of cultural processes and contexts. The view is directedto the cultural-theoretical implications contained in Panofsky’s formula. This implies afundamental mobility of classical cultural elements. The proximity to the ethnological modelof diffusion enables a cultural-theoretical approach to Panofsky’s work that has so far beenignored, nor has it been contextualized in terms of a history of ideas. It becomes clear thatcultural tradition is formed on the basis of diffusionist explanatory patterns with the aim ofpostulating a hierarchical order of European (cultural) epochs using the example of the receptionof antiquity. The approach shows the potential hidden in the comparison of dominantcurrents in German ethnology and art history in the early 20th century "

The study is devoted to the periodization of the history of Kazakh music in the 20th century which is necessary for an objective reflection of all the complex musical and cultural processes of this time. Based on the existing approaches to periodization (U. Jumakova, M. Drozhzhina, V. Nedlina), as well as the methodology of V.R. Dulat-Aleyev, a universal basis for periodization was searched. Different approaches to the periodization of the musical culture of Kazakhstan in the 20th century one way or another take into account the aspect of the change of cultural paradigms, as a result of which the main time boundaries coincide. The reasons for periodization are the change of generations of composers (U. Jumakova), the interaction vectors of the center and periphery of culture (M. Drozhzhina), intercultural interaction (V. Nedlina). In this study, another, broader basis for periodization is proposed – a change in the paradigms of culture. It involves a semiotic interpretation of musical culture. The division of the recent history of Kazakh musical culture is consistent with the predominance of monomodality (until the 1920s), bimodality (1920-1970s) and polymodality (1980 – present). The paradigm of culture acts as a universal foundation and allows us to combine musical and cultural processes in different musical and creative forms (traditional music, composer creativity, mass art), and also take into account the wide Eurasian context of Kazakhstani music.

The epic genre plays a significant role in Kyrgyz folklore. The Manas epos is prominent among the numerous tales, songs, and smaller epic works of Kyrgyz folklore. The Manas epos is popular both in the Kyrgyz Republic and in China where people of Kyrgyz ethnicity live. The work of collecting and writing down the Manas epos is a great challenge, for the epic is exceptionally long and versatile. The best Russian scholars of the late 19th — early 20th century, leading Soviet and Chinese researchers of Kyrgyz folklore united their efforts to collect and write down the Manas epos. The aim of the article is to analyze the history of collecting and writing down the Manas epos in Kyrgyzstan and in China. The process of collecting and writing down the epic work started in the pre-revolutionary period by Ch. Vaikhanov and V. Radlov. The work was continued by K. Miftakhov and I. Abdyrakhmanov in the Kyrgyz Republic. The Manas epos is popular in China, where there are many epic storytellers who recite their own variants of the epic. Chinese scholars work to collect and write down various variants of the epic. The most famous epic poetry collectors are Balbay Mamay, Lu Fajun, Hu Jen-hwa, Saken Omur, Lu Chienwu and others. The researchers have managed to write down more than twenty different variants of the epic. They have undoubtedly done great work in the sphere of collecting and writing down the Manas epos in Kyrgyzstan and in China.
