The funds of the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv have been analyzed. It is turned out that the most significant information potential regarding the Jagiellonian dynasties Lviv defense policy is fund: 52, 131. One of the types of documents created by the Royal Chancellery, namely privileges as a result of the activity of the document-communication system of the defense policy of Lviv of the Jagiellonian dynasty, was researched. During the document processing, privileges in the content have been systematized as those issued for the restoration of the city’s defense capability, for protection against attacks by Turkish-Tatar troops and for natural disasters elimination. On the basis of them, the analysis of the functions they performed during their pre-source existence was made. The analysis of documents in the period of its pre-source existence makes it possible to consider it as a real phenomenon, and as a fact of the historical process. Another benefit of this research is that, depending on the role that privileges have played in the past, its significance in the source base is largely determined. The more significant the primary social function of the source (the impact on subsequent historical events, processes, phenomena, breadth of scope, etc.), the more important the value of the source as the information bearer. Thus, the following functions were clarified as informational, social, communicative, administrative, legal, and historical functions, which acquired privileges after their operational acting role and were sent to Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv for preservation. The paper gives examples of the Jagiellonian dynasty privileges and the dynamics of their issuance during the defense capabilities and fortifications construction enhancement in Lviv for natural disasters or enemy attack protection. The study found that the urban privileges granted by monarchs at different times were the main research source into the kings’ policy to strengthen Lviv’s defense capabilities. The informative value of the sources consists of the possibility to trace the emergence of Lviv as an important defense and strategic center by analyzing the document content. The city fortifications are first mentioned in the privileges of Vladislav II Jagiello. During the reign of the successors of Vladislav II Jagiello – Casimir IV and Jan Olbracht, a large-scale construction of new fortifications, walls and towers was completed. The privileges of the successor kings Jagiel are typologically similar and granted for the same purpose as Vladislav II Jagiel himself. Keywords: document-communication system, Jagiellonian dynasty, medieval Lviv, defense fortifications, archival sources, privileges, functional analysis.

Abstract. Natural hazards can be seen as a function of a specific natural process and human (economic) activity. Whereby the bulk of literature on natural hazard management has its focus on the natural process, an increasing number of scholars is emphasizing the importance of human activity in this context. Existing literature has identified certain socio-economic factors that determine the impact of natural disasters on society. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the effects of the institutional framework that influences human behavior by setting incentives and to point out the importance of institutional vulnerability. Results from an empirical investigation of large scale natural disasters between 1984 and 2004 show that countries with better institutions experience less victims and lower economic losses from natural disasters. In addition, the results suggest a non-linear relationship between economic development and economic disaster losses. The suggestions in this paper have implications for the discussion on how to deal with the adverse effects of natural hazards and how to develop efficient adaption strategies.

The vast Federmessergruppen site of Lommel-Maatheide, which is located in the Campine region (Northern Belgium), revealed the presence of numerous Final Palaeolithic concentrations situated on a large Late Glacial sand ridge on the northern edge of a contemporary lake. This situation offers a unique possibility for a large-scale functional analysis in order to understand the occupation of such a Late Glacial dune landscape. The variable preservation state of the lithic artefacts permitted to evaluate in detail the impact of post-depositional processes on the potential of functional studies. Also, the impact of excavation protocols on the preservation of wear traces and residues was evaluated, in particular the impact of mechanical sieving. The integrated functional research that included the microscopic examination of wear traces, fractures and residues, next to experimentation, permitted the identification of a range of crafting and hunting activities, thereby demonstrating the potential of such assemblages for obtaining innovative insights into Late Glacial site dynamics in spite of a varying preservation state.

Abstract With the rapid development of broadband carrier communication technology, the power line communication market is growing. However, the frequency band of power line communication overlaps with other radio services, mainly the High Frequency (HF) radio services. In addition, power line communication may have electromagnetic leakage in the open air. Large-scale power line communication system will give a much greater interference to some critical HF radio services. In this paper, the standards and researches relative to the power line communication system are reviewed. Based on existing studies, impact analysis which includes the impact probability and severity of the power line communication system on HF equipment is proposed. In addition, explicit explanations are provided. The proposed impact analysis methods are applied to simulations and evaluations. Numerical results demonstrate that a large-scale power line communication system will cause additional ambient noise, which affects the performance and reliability of HF equipment with a high probability.

There has been an increase in the occurrence of natural disasters and their impact has aroused the interest of many stakeholders to incorporate different strategies on disaster management. Although disasters may end many opportunities and lives, the lives of survivors do not cease in the disaster affected areas. The impact of natural disasters and the consequent partial reconstruction efforts have specifically presented many challenges to women. In this context, the main research investigates the empowerment of women during post disaster reconstruction particularly in Sri Lanka. Among the factors that influence women's empowerment, existing policies and frameworks is one of the important factors that can play a major role within the post disaster reconstruction in Sri Lanka. Hence, in order to gain an understanding of the existing framework of women's empowerment, this study investigates the national and international policies and frameworks that exist within the post disaster context in Sri Lanka. The study found that even though polices are gender neutral, they are not gender sensitive. In addition, it was found that having a single policy or framework for the whole country is unlikely to be a success, therefore, any frameworks should have room to be adopted to the local situation. The impact of changes in the performed functions on the physiognomy of the port in Ustka The aim of the article is to present the impact of changes in the functions performed by the port in Ustka on its physiognomy. The functional analysis mainly covers the period of 2016-2019, while the analysis of the physiognomy was conducted for 2021. It was found that the basic trans-shipment function is played to a minimum extent in Ustka. The function of sea tourism is insufficiently realized (no yacht marina), and the function of passenger shipping is not performed. The function of recreational fishing and angling is still performed by the port, but to a lesser extent than in the past. There is no longer any production activity in the port area, although in the past it was carried out on a large scale. There is a chance that the port will develop a function related to the maintenance and operation of wind farms. On the other hand, the tourist function (gastronomy, hotels, etc.) and housing are strongly developing in the port. Introducing the latter function into the port was considered a mistake. Changes in functions result in changes to the port physiognomy. Industrial and trans-shipment facilities are disappearing and replaced with hotel, catering and residential facilities. However, these changes are long delayed.

The first in Russia large-scale study on the impact of hunting on wader populations was carried out in Kamchatka in 2019. The main research method was anonymous hunters questioning. In Kamchatka Krai, about 3.400 hunters take part in the wader hunt. Of the 402 hunters, who participated in the anonymous questioning, 55 % were hunting Whimbrels in the current season; 9 %, other large and medium-size wader species; 14 %, smaller waders. The total of about 45.000 waders are shot annually in Kamchatka, including 37.000 Whimbrels 1.600 waders of other large species, and 6 thousand waders of smaller species. From the species listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation, up to 20 Oystercatchers, 100 Far Eastern Curlews, 200 Bar-tailed Godwits, 300 Grater Knots, and 100 Red Knots are shot. Hunting smaller waders is not popular, but it causes the death of up to 12.000 thousand smaller waders, with Spoon-billed Sandpiper also occasionally killed. Special educational activities for hunters and hunting officers are required for conservation of wader populations included in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation; first, a special field guide of waders in the Far East should be published. It is also necessary to restore the Moroshechnaya River sanctuary reserve, liquidated in 2009 yet included in the official list of areas of international importance for waders on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to assess the use of digital collections created via the large-scale digitization of archival collections. The large-scale digitization method specifically examined is the reuse of archival description from finding aids to create digital collections that consist mainly of compound digital objects, equivalent to a folder of items, minimally described at the aggregate level. This paper compares Web analytics data for two large-scale digital collections and one digital collection with rich, item-level description. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzed one year of Web analytics for three digital collections. The main research question of this study is: Are digital collections of minimally described compound objects used less than digital collections of richly described single objects? Findings This study found that the large-scale digital collections analyzed received less use than the traditional item-level collection, when examined at the item level. At the object level, the large-scale collections did not always receive less use than the traditional item-level collection. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to three different digital collections from one institution. Web analytics also represent a limited interpretation of “use.” Practical implications This study presents a method for other institutions to assess their own large-scale digitization efforts and contributes to the profession’s understanding of the impact of large-scale digitization. Originality/value This paper is unique because it uses Web analytics to compare the use of large-scale digital collections to the use of traditional boutique digital collections.

Abstract. Globalization and technological revolutions are making the world more interconnected. International trade is an important approach linking the world. Since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan shocked the global supply chain, more attention has been paid to the global impact of large-scale disasters. China is the second largest trader in the world and faces frequent natural disasters. Therefore, this study proposes a gravity model for China's bilateral trade tailored to national circumstances and estimates the impact of natural disasters in China and trading partner countries on Chinese imports and exports. We analyzed Chinese and trading partner statistical data from 1980 to 2012. Study results show the following: (1) China's natural disasters have a positive impact on exports but have no significant impact on imports; (2) trading partner countries' natural disasters reduce Chinese imports and exports; (3) both development level and land area of the partners are important in determining the intensity of natural disaster impacts on China's bilateral trade. The above findings suggest that the impact of natural disasters on trade is asymmetric and significantly affected by other factors, which demand further study.
