In 1996, more than 72,000 acres of vegetables were produced in Alabama. This number has been steadily increasing since the mid-1980s. Growers and county agents requested information on which vegetable varieties performed well in Alabama. To support a growing vegetable industry, Auburn Univ. committed itself to developing an extensive vegetable variety trial (VVT) program focusing on rapid dissemination of results. Presently, replicated trials are held at nine experiment stations, each representing a unique growing environment. The VVTs are divided into a spring and fall section. The spring trials evaluate spring/summer planted crops such as tomato, peppers, watermelon, sweetpotato, eggplant, southernpea, lettuce, melons, cucumber, summer squash, and others. Fall trials examine cole crops, winter squash, pumpkin, and other late-summer/fall-planted crops. Turn around time from final harvest of the final crop to placing the report in the county agent's or grower's hands is 2 to 3 months. Good support is received from industry through financial contributions and/or materials. More than 3000 copies of the spring and fall VVT reports are distributed annually at field days, statewide and county meetings, and in direct mailings. Other research projects, such as projects on nutritional composition of vegetables, postharvest quality, and consumer acceptance, have been supported by materials from the VVT program. Without overwhelming support and commitment from the State of Alabama, Auburn Univ., grower organizations, and industry, the VVT program would not be the success that it is today providing timely and needed information to strengthen the growing vegetable industry in Alabama.

Productivity of bulb onions (Allium cepa L.) is largely constrained by postharvest losses. There are several postharvest strategies applicable to onions, but they are mostly applied singularly and therefore their combined effects have not been well studied. This study was set out to evaluate the effects of harvesting stage, curing period, and time of topping on postharvest quality of stored red bulb onions. The study was carried out in Yatta Subcounty, Machakos County, Kenya. The experimental design was split-split plot laid out in a 3 × 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of harvesting stage (25%, 50%, and 75% top fall), curing period (none, 1 week, and 2 weeks after harvesting), and time of topping (before and after curing). All the treatments were replicated three times. After 3 months of storage, the bulbs were analyzed for proximate and nutritional composition. Bulbs that were harvested at 75% top fall and cured for one or two weeks before topping retained higher moisture content, bulb weight, crude protein, vitamin C, zinc, potassium, calcium, and iron but lower sodium content after three-month storage. These practices are therefore recommended for maintaining the nutritional quality of bulb onions after harvesting.

Virus and fungal disease pressures limit fall production of summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) in Kentucky. Twenty-five summer squash cultivars (nine zucchini, eight yellow straightneck, and eight yellow crookneck entries) were evaluated for marketable yield, appearance, and disease resistance in a late summer planting. Genetically engineered virus-resistant materials and new conventionally bred resistant or tolerant cultivars were compared with popular susceptible hybrids. Virus incidence was determined visually before and after final harvest and was also determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) was most frequently detected and appeared to have caused most of the observed symptoms. Conventionally bred cultivars containing the precocious yellow gene and two transgenic lines were in the highest yielding group of yellow straightneck squash despite high virus incidence in precocious yellow cultivars. Among yellow crooknecks, transgenic cultivars were clearly superior for disease resistance and yields. Conventionally bred cultivars with virus tolerance were among the highest yielding zucchini types. Most transgenics were superior to their nontransformed equivalent cultivars for virus resistance and yield. Cultivars and breeding lines varied considerably in color, shape, and overall appearance. ELISA results revealed that some (but not all) transgenic cultivars tested positive for the coat protein corresponding to the virus resistance present in that cultivar. Also, mild virus-like symptoms were observed in transgenic squash plants after the conclusion of harvest.

From 2014 to 2016, five fungicide programs of varying fungicide efficacy were evaluated for the control of cucurbit downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis) on three different cucurbit crops at the Rutgers Agricultural Research and Extension Center (RAREC) in Bridgeton, NJ. The five fungicide programs were: (i) no fungicide input; (ii) low-input (chlorothalonil only); (iii) medium-input (protectant + 2 downy mildew-specific fungicides [Tanos, Curzate]); (iv) high-input (protectant + 2 downy mildew-specific fungicides [Ranman, Presidio]); or (v) high-input (protectant + 3 downy mildew-specific fungicides [Previcur Flex, Ranman, Zampro]). The three cucurbit crops were cucumber cv. Marketmore 76, zucchini cv. Reward (summer squash), and acorn squash cv. Taybelle (winter squash). In 2014, only cucumber was infected by the pathogen. In 2015 and 2016, all three cucurbit hosts were infected by downy mildew at varying severities suggesting that the P. cubensis population may have differed compared with 2014. In all three years control of downy mildew was significantly higher when downy mildew-specific fungicides were included in weekly rotations. In some years, no fungicides, broad-spectrum fungicides only, or fungicides with moderate or lower efficacy for downy mildew may provide adequate control on certain cucurbit crop species depending on the current cucurbit downy mildew pathogen population.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and squash (Cucurbita spp.) production in Michigan is limited by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora capsici. Cucumber, summer squash, and winter squash fruit were evaluated for susceptibility to five isolates of P. capsici. Detached fruit were inoculated with a 5-mm-diameter culture plug of mycelia and sporangia and were incubated in a laboratory or greenhouse. Lesion and pathogen growth diameters were measured and pathogen growth density was visually assessed. All P. capsici isolates incited rot, with significant differences found among fruit type and pathogen isolate. Straightneck squash (Cucurbita pepo), slicing cucumber, and butternut squash (C. moschata) exhibited more severe symptoms than the other fruit tested. Summer and winter squash seedlings were evaluated in greenhouse experiments, in which P. capsici-infested millet seed (approximately 1 g) were placed on the surface of soilless potting media. Disease severity was visually assessed every 2 days for 14 days post inoculation. Crop type, pathogen isolate, or the crop type–pathogen isolate interaction term were significant for symptom appearance and area under the disease progress curve values. Differences in susceptibility of butternut squash and zucchini cultivars were observed following inoculation with solanaceous isolate 13351. Results from this study can refine management programs for Phytophthora rot.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of harvest at maturity on the composition, quality, and postharvest life of zapallito squash (Cucurbita maxima var. zapallito). Fruit were harvested at three developmental stages - small, medium, and large, with 30, 70, and 90±10-mm diameter, respectively - and were stored at 0 and 5°C for 26 days and, then, at 20°C for 2 days. The following parameters were determined: respiration, firmness, color, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, sugars, acidity, phenolic compounds, antioxidants, decay, mass loss, and chilling injury (CI). Small light-colored squashes were more prone to dehydration and decay. Delaying harvest markedly reduced fruit carotenoid contents, acidity, and respiration rate; however, it did not affect firmness nor sugar content. Chlorophyll showed an increasing trend during fruit development. Small squashes had 100% higher levels of phenolic compounds and antioxidants than medium and large fruit, but were more sensitive to CI. No differences for CI susceptibility were observed between medium and large fruit. The quality of small, medium, and large squashes remained acceptable for 12, 19, and 26 days at 5ºC, respectively, plus 2 days at 20ºC.

AbstractPurpose of reviewPreprint servers including arXiv and bioRxiv have disrupted the scientific communication landscape by providing rapid access to pre--peer reviewed research. MedRxiv is a recently launched free online repository for preprints in the health sciences. We sought to summarize potential benefits and risks to preprint server use, from both the researcher and end--user perspective, and evaluate the uptake of preprint servers in the nephrology community.Sources of InformationWe performed a rapid review of articles describing preprint servers and their use. We approached the 20 highest impact nephrology journals regarding their policy towards the use of preprint servers. We evaluated the average time from study completion to publication of impactful articles in nephrology. Finally, we evaluated the number of nephrology articles submitted to preprint servers.FindingsTo date over 600 kidney--related articles have been uploaded to bioRxiv and medRxiv. The average time from study completion to publication was over 10 months. 16 of the top 20 nephrology journals currently accept research submitted to a preprint server. Transparency and collaboration, visibility and recognition, and rapid dissemination of results were identified as benefits of preprint servers. Concerns exist regarding the potential risk of non--peer reviewed medical research being publicly available.LimitationsPreprint servers remain a recent phenomenon in health sciences and their long-- term impact on the medical literature remains to be seen.ImplicationsThe quantity of research submitted to preprint servers is likely to continue to grow. The model for dissemination of research results will need to adapt to incorporate preprint servers.

A molecular and morphological marker map would improve our knowledge of Cucurbita genetics, and would facilitate efforts to breed improved summer and winter squash cultivars. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to construct a partial map of the Cucurbita genome. The mapping population was the BC1 progeny of the Cucurbita pepo L. yellow straightneck inbred A0449 and the tropical Cucurbita moschata Duchesne ex Lam. landrace `Nigerian Local'. A0449 was the recurrent parent. This cross was chosen because of the relatively greater economic importance of summer squash, traits of value to be introgressed from the C. moschata parent, and maximized genetic variation from the interspecific cross. The map contains 148 RAPD markers in 28 linkage groups. Loci controlling five morphological traits were placed on the map. The map covers 1,954 cM, which is estimated to be 75% of the Cucurbita genome. The qualitative traits placed on the map include the B gene for fruit which turn yellow before anthesis, the M gene for silver mottling of leaves, and a locus controlling the intensity of rind color on mature fruit. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with fruit shape and the depth of the indentations between primary leaf veins were identified.
