For the first time in history, full-scale performances on musical compositions by a Malaysian composer, Razak Abdul Aziz, were presented through two academic recitals—27 July 2019 and 6 February 2020—at Orchestra Hall, Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA). These recitals consisted of solo and collaborative piano works, performed by me and a team of music collaborators that were specifically selected for this purpose. Razak Abdul Aziz, who is still actively composing, spent most of his career life as an academic, first serving for Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM), then Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) until his retirement in November 2019. Besides fulfilling the academic requirements set by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) for my doctoral degree, I had chosen to perform works by this composer as he is generally known to the local music community as one of the earliest contemporary composers in the country (started composing in the 1980s). Yet, a full-scale performance of his works was long overdue, though he had the opportunities to have some of his works premiered and performed on local and international platforms as part of concert programmes. This artist project talks about the preparation I made for both recitals, briefly explaining the creative process I journeyed through and the challenges I faced during this time span, discussing each work I had selected for these academic recitals. These recitals could, perhaps, be the pioneers in studying and performing works by Razak Abdul Aziz, hoping to expand this effort to national and international levels.

For the first time the paper determines thermophysical properties (specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and heat conductivity) of the full-scale corium of the fast energy nuclear reactor within the temperature range from ~30°С to ~400°С. Obtained data are to be used in temperature fields calculations during modeling the processes of corium melt retention inside of the fast reactor vessel.

The article presents a focused look at the professional relations of the composer and pianist Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein (1829—1894) with his main Russian publishers — V.V. Bessel and P.I. Jurgenson. The article is based on musical and historical research concerning the history of the Bessel and Jurgenson publishing houses, works on copyright, A.G. Rubinstein’s epistolary, and archival documents from the Russian National Museum of Music. For the first time in music science, there are revealed some pages of the history of personal and business contacts of the three named persons, primarily the conflicts related to the rights to publish the composer’s works in Russia. The first documented contract for the publications of A.G. Rubinstein was received by P.I. Jurgenson (for op. 82, 1868). However, the contract of A.G. Rubinstein with the trading house “Bessel and Co.”, concluded in 1871 (though Rubinstein’s first work had been published by Bessel two years earlier), was much more extensive and significant. Under this contract, it was supposed to publish more than fifty A.G. Rubinstein’s works of various genres, so in the 1870s, V.V. Bessel became the main Russian publisher of the composer. However, in 1879, A.G. Rubinstein unexpectedly changed his main publisher in Russia. This position was taken by P.I. Jurgenson, whose trading house also published an extensive list of Rubinstein’s compositions, as well as his literary works. This is evidenced by several notarized contracts, stored in the Russian National Museum of Music, between Rubinstein and “P.I. Jurgenson” company. Thus, the two leading Russian publishers of A.G. Rubinstein legally formalized their relations with the composer, which allows us to follow, in a reasoned and substantive way, the process of maturation of the institution of copyright for music publications in Russia in the last third of the 19th century.Using the example of A.G. Rubinstein, in comparison with the position of M.A. Balakirev, the article also raises the issue of granting copyright to a publisher not only in Russia, but also “forever and for all countries”. The comparative analysis of publications of the same composer by different publishing companies is also new to Russian musicology, this helps identify certain accents that publishers put in popularizing A.G. Rubinstein’s works. The publication of the composer’s works by various publishers also highlights new aspects in his creative process, in the history of the creation, receipt of the opus number, and the titles of some of his works.

In 1961 Kazimirchak-Polonskaya (1961a, 1961b) published comprehensive reviews of all investigations on the dynamics of cometary orbits as well as on close approaches of the short-period comets with Jupiter for the time span covering 1770–1960 and for the first time put forward the basic problems of cometary astronomy from the standpoint of celestial mechanics. Chebotarev (1971) pointed out that “these reviews, supplemented with extensive references, can serve as a valuable manual for all researchers of cometary motions”. In 1967 Kazimirchak-Polonskaya (1967a) developed the advanced problems in a definitive form. The corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Science M.F. Subbotin (at that time the Head of the Institute) characterized the above mentioned works as “the general plan for cometary studies in the important branch of cometary astronomy”.

In this paper, coal gasification characteristics in the reductor were investigated in a full-scale two-stage pressurized entrained-flow gasifier, which has been seldom conducted previously. The present study aimed at elucidating the effects of gasifying agent concentration, coal input rate, and operation period under full reductor load on the performance of a utility two-stage pressurized entrained-flow gasifier for the first time. When the steam input in the combustor was raised from 3318 kg/h to 5722 kg/h, the total outputs of H2, CO, and CO2 were increased by 1765 Nm3/h and 2063 Nm3/h, respectively, while the CH4 output was decreased by 49 Nm3/h. The coal conversion rate was minimal at low steam input. In addition, more coal gasified in the reductor could increase the output of CH4, while CH4 could reach 1.24% with the coal input in the range of 8000–10,000 kg/h. The present work can offer a further understanding of the gasification performance in the reductor of the full-scale two-stage pressurized entrained-flow gasifier, and motivates the potential for clean utilization of coal resource.

Hardware implementation of discrete adaptive control for a full scale vehicular single degree of freedom (SDOF) active suspension has been discussed in this paper. This paper describes an experimental evaluation of full scale fail-safe adaptive active (SDOF) suspension system that has been performed for the first time. A servo hydraulic force actuator is installed along with passive suspension components to form a fail-safe active suspension. A discrete model reference adaptive control (DMRAC) approach with recursive least square (RLS) estimation and covariance modification has been used for the software/hardware based digital control. A real time computer controlled adaptive active suspension software which shows the experimental response and animation of the results has been developed.

Midway through composing his five-poem sequence The Atlas (ca. 1930), the acclaimed Australian poet Kenneth Slessor suddenly wrote “Southerne Sea” in his poetry journal. He’d just chosen John Speed’s famous double-hemisphere map, A New and Accurat Map of the World (1651/1676), as the epithet of his fourth poem “Mermaids.” Unlike the cartographic epigraphs introducing the other poems, however, this map has little to do with “Mermaids,” which is a riotous romp through seas of fantastic creatures, and a paean to the maps that gave such creatures immortality. The map features a vast “Southerne Unknowne Land,” but no mythical beasts. And while it names “Southerne Sea” and “Mar del Zur,” neither “Mermaids” nor The Atlas mentions Australia or the Southern Sea. Moreover, Slessor’s sailors are “staring from maps in sweet and poisoned places,” yet what the poem describes are “portulano maps,” replete with compass roses and rhumb lines—features notably absent on A New and Accurat Map of the World. My paper, the fifth part of the first full-scale examination of Slessor’s ambitious but poorly understood sequence, retraces his creative process to reveal why he chose the so-called Speed map. In the process, it extricates the poem from what Slessor originally called “Lost Lands Mermaids” in his journal, details his debt to the ephemeral map catalogue in which he discovered his epigraph, and, finally, offers alternative cartographic representations for “Mermaids.” Among them, Norman Lindsay’s delightful frontispiece for Cuckooz Contrey (1932), the collection in which The Atlas debuted as the opening sequence.

The creation of novel kinematic structures of mechanisms still represents a major challenge in the quest for developing new, innovative devices. In this setting, computer models that can automatically generate and visualize all possible independent structures in an intuitive manner prove to be valuable as a support in the creative process of the designer. This paper proposes an automatic approach for establishing the complete atlas database of 2-DOF kinematic chains and a systematic approach for the creative design of mechanisms based on such an atlas. First, the transformation of the kinematic structure into a graph-based representation is addressed. Then, an approach for the generation of all nonfractionated topological graphs of 2-DOF (degrees of freedom) kinematic chains using contracted graphs as well as a method for synthesizing all the fractionated topological graphs through the combination of corresponding 1-DOF kinematic chains are addressed. Based on these methods, the complete atlas database of 2-DOF kinematic chains up to 15 links is established in this paper for the first time. Using this complete database, a systematic approach for the creative design of mechanisms can be derived, as illustrated for the example of an 11-link 2-DOF rode tractor.

There are quite often statically complex structures, the reliability of theoretical calculations of which needs experimental verification in the world practice of design and construction. Studies of building structures functioning can be full-scale or carried out on their models in laboratory conditions depending on the goals set. Full-scale tests of building structures are more expensive, therefore, their implementation requires a special approach and justification. However, to check the operation of complex, critical structures which primarily include metal spatial large-span structures of coatings of buildings and structures especially those used for the first time to assess their bearing capacity, to establish the degree of participation in the construction of each of the elements, to study the operation of individual new nodal elements etc., only full-scale tests are required.

The purpose of the article is to reveal some aspects of the importance of the role of piano training in a future military conductor’s professional development while studying piano works. The research methodology consists of a comparative approach, as well as, empirical and general scientific (analysis, synthesis) methods. Scientific novelty. For the first time, this paper shows the organic relationship between piano training and a future military conductor’s professional development. The poly-functional capabilities of the piano instrument and their influence on the formation of the musical-performing experience of the future conductor are revealed. Conclusions. In the context of a military conductor’s professional development, the author considers the essence and significance of a military conductor’s piano training as an integral part of improving various aspects of performing skills. The specificity and expediency of the didactic repertoire is substantiated, taking into account the functional capabilities of the piano instrument for the development of a future conductor’s musical performance experience, the formation and use of sound extraction techniques, the mastery of the expressive capabilities of the instrument using the entire set of methods and means necessary for the implementation of figurative and artistic intentions and the musical thinking upbringing.

Purpose: Humans have different personalities, namely introverts and extroverts. Program music is one of the compositional techniques whose purpose is to describe something in the creation of music through the analogy of meaning. Research methods: This creation research uses the Practice-Led Research method. Data obtained through a literature study approach, then the data is associated with music through an analogy process. Results and discussion: The creative process in creating music is very diverse, one of which is through extra-musical ideas. In the realm of music creation other disciplines can be used as music creation ideas. Psychology and music can be related through listening and feeling. The musical works created are vocal and piano works about introverts and extroverts. Implication: The implications of this research creation are expected to trigger the idea of creating music more broadly, especially across scientific disciplines.
