The present paper is a contribution to the building blocks of an investmentmodel within the framework of an integrated macroeconomic model of anIslamic economy. Investment behavior in the model is guided by an Islamicethicalvalue system and profit-sharing financial contracts. The typical firm’sinvestment decision is believed to emerge from a dynamic inter-temporalmaximization exercise within an infinite time horizon. The method of Calculusof Variations is applied to arrive at the optimal investment and employmentcriteria for the firm. The result is then incorporated into a macroeconomicmodel to study the behavior of key endogenous variables like national incomeand the rate of profit-share. Comparative statics exercised within a generalequilibrium framework reveal the potency of monetary policy but the neutralityof fiscal policy with respect to output and employment.IntroductionThe past decade has witnessed a tremendous outpouring of interest aswell as effort in the formalization of economic models based on profit-sharingfinancial arrangements as an Islamic alternative to the conventional interestbasedeconomic system. Several macroeconomic models for interest-freeeconomies have been proposed (Anwar 1987; Habibi 1987; Metwally 1981& 1983). The rigor of an integrated approach to such macroeconomic modelhgdepends on the rigor of the component models, namely, the consumption, investment, monetary, and fiscal relationships. Economists have writtenextensively on different aspects of consumer behavior in Islamic societies.Kahf (1978) and Khan (1984), among others, have contributed to the conceptualand analytical formulation of the consumption function under ...

<p><em>The purpose of this study was to determine the direct and indirect effects of managerial characteristics on BMT performance through a strategic orientation. This research is an explanatory type with a sample of 390 people by purposive sampling. The study was collected using a Likert-style questionnaire and analyzed by SEM method. Exogenous latent variables 7 indicators, endogenous latent variables 6 indicators and endogenous variables 3 indicators. Outer models and inner models meet for SEM analysis. The maximum contribution of each managerial characteristic variable is 93.1% for the indicator of market opportunity identification, the strategic orientation variable is 96.1% for the indicator of making unique products and the BMT performance variable is 97.5% for the sales indicator. Managerial characteristics had a significant positive direct effect on strategic orientation of 22.1%. We investigate two determinants of two choices in the control system of divisionalized firms, namely decentralization and use of performance measures. The two determinants are those identified in the literature as important to control system design: (1) information asymmetries between corporate and divisional managers and (2) division interdependencies. We treat decentralization and performance measurement choices as endogenous variables and examine the interrelation among these choices using a simultaneous equation model. Using data from 78 divisions, our results indicate that decentralization is positively related to the level of information asymmetries and negatively to intrafirm interdependencies, while the use of performance measures is affected by the level of interdependencies among divisions within the firm, but not by information asymmetries. We find some evidence that decentralization choice and use of performance measures are complementary.

AbstractWe present a deformation energy model for predicting nucleosome positioning, in which a position-dependent structural parameter set derived from crystal structures of nucleosomes was used to calculate the DNA deformation energy. The model is successful in predicting nucleosome occupancy genome-wide in budding yeast, nucleosome free energy, and rotational positioning of nucleosomes. Our model also indicates that the genomic regions underlying the MNase-sensitive nucleosomes in budding yeast have high deformation energy and, consequently, low nucleosome-forming ability, while the MNase-sensitive non-histone particles are characterized by much lower DNA deformation energy and high nucleosome preference. In addition, we also revealed that remodelers, SNF2 and RSC8, are likely to act in chromatin remodeling by binding to broad nucleosome-depleted regions that are intrinsically favorable for nucleosome positioning. Our data support the important role of position-dependent physical properties of DNA in nucleosome positioning.

In this research, the vital factors responsible for the demise of many dotcoms are identified and investigated. A mediator model is presented to explore possible relationships among the exogenous and endogenous variables in accordance with business and technology strategies. Two major analyses are conducted to examine the primary causes for dotcom failure. The first analysis examines the relationships between exogenous and endogenous variables based on the quasi-empirical findings from 50 failed dotcoms. The second analysis conducts a non-parametric correlation analysis of the variables. The results indicate that exogenous variables, fund and competition, influence the endogenous variables, staff, front-end operation, back-end operation, and business strategy. The practical implication of this study is to provide current and future dotcoms with another angle of view for assessing and adjusting their strategic position by evaluating those critical determinants and their inter-relationships so that a robust business model can be implemented.

AbstractIn this paper, we propose the use of stochastic frontier models to impose theoretical regularity constraints (like monotonicity and concavity) on flexible functional forms. These constraints take the form of inequalities involving the data and the parameters of the model. We address a major concern when statistically endogenous variables are present in these inequalities. We present results with and without endogeneity in the inequality constraints. In the system case (e.g., cost-share equations) or more generally, in production function-first-order conditions case, we detect an econometric problem which we solve successfully. We provide an empirical application to US electric power generation plants during 1986–1997, previously used by several authors.
