Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the post-harvest supply chain enablers (PHSCEs) for vertical integration to enhance rural employability, farmer profitability and rural produce marketability (i.e. market prospects) in the post-harvest supply chain (PHSC). The impact of vertical integration is also explored for various commercial produces. Design/methodology/approach A structural equation modeling (SEM) of PHSCEs for vertical integration was developed to enhance market prospects, rural employability and farmer profitability. The impact of business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-customer market prospects are explored in various dimensions for stakeholders such as farmers, manufacturers (processors), distributors and retailers. The fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (F-TOPSIS) was used to prioritize these PHSCEs to improve market prospects and rural employability. Findings The PHSCEs are clustered into three groups, namely, initiatives at the strategic frontier, initiatives at the tactical frontier and concerns for rural employability via vertical integration using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and SEM to prove the null hypothesis. With F-TOPSIS results, the availability of warehousing was found to be the most crucial enabler when observing the PHSCEs from the initiatives’ perspective. The technology adaptability and availability, institute for training and research and information infrastructure and information visibility were found to be the key PHSCEs when observed from PHSC stakeholders’ perspectives. Research limitations/implications The implementation of this study will improve the rural produce marketability, rural employability, B2B marketing (i.e. effective distribution) and subsequent value chains with the practice of vertical integration for fresh produce at the rural level. Practical implications The outcomes of this study have a key role in developing the rural regions and improving rural livelihoods via value addition. The awareness of commercial cultivation and value addition in rural areas needs to be improved. This will help farmers to earn better revenues with improved market prospects in comparison to the revenues obtained from the cultivation of staple/conventional crops. Originality/value In an era of cold chains and food processing, this study aims to disseminate awareness about value addition for commercial and fresh produces at the rural level. The implication of this study will improve rural produce marketability, rural employability and farmer profitability at the rural level with the level of vertical integration.

Abstract To remain competitive in the global marketplace, manufacturing companies are transforming their organizational structure and operational philosophy from one based on vertical-integration to one based on core competencies. This trend has resulted in an economy wherein practically every manufacturing company has become dependent on a supply-chain of vendors in order to serve its customers. In the context of this distributed manufacturing environment, the Internet and related technologies such as Java, VRML and intelligent WWW agents are creating fundamentally new approaches to supply-chain interactions that offer greater flexibility in identifying suppliers and the ability to dramatically reduce the response time within a supply-chain for processing requests-for-quotation (RFQs) and orders from customers. In this paper, we describe a generic framework for Internet-based customer-vendor interactions, and present a computer-integrated system for rapid and effective processing of RFQs in such an Internet-based supply-chain. We also identify some key research challenges within this framework that need to be overcome for Internet-based supply-chain interaction to be successful.

Abstract The purpose of this research is to review a sample of literature in the area of supply chain integration. Considering the extensive amount of literature on supply chain integration, it appears that it is still in its infancy. This study reviews a sample of 152 articles and in doing so throw light on different aspects of supply chain integration namely: vertical integration, functional integration, integration models .It discusses and criticizes the current state of literature on this context so that future researches find directions to contribute to missing points and remove obstacles. The scope of this review is limited to a cross-section of the literature in this area. As such, it cannot, and does not, attempt to be an examination of the full range of the literature, but a sampling of important and influential works.

According its position in the supply chain, agrarian producers could contemplate higher or lower possibilities for the realization of its production. Not all types of cultures allow reaching final clients directly, because those products are aimed for intermediate consumption or are used as a source for Food processing Industry. Reaching final clients producers could be benefited by higher prices of realization of their products, but a "vertical integration forward" is required to be done successfully. Additional labor and capital resources need to be invested in that activity. Information of the market and acquisition of knowledge both commercial and assessment of experts are also required in order to be accomplish the realization of products both in national and external markets. The aim of this research is to identify and asses different ways that are available to Bulgarian agricultural producers for the realization of their production. For that reason precisely the position of the supply chain could determine broadly the depth and the horizon of market possibilities available.

Successful implementation of food supply chains in improving the productivity and operational efficiency by some companies made many other firms and researchers courteous about this fast developing field. For successful strategies, organizations in agri-food business are aiming to bring all its stakeholders in close cooperation. The agri-food supply chain aims at optimal warehousing and location design, supply-demand synchronization, checking price variations and ultimately minimizing waste and improving productivity at every stage leveraging Information Technology (IT). This research reviews the supply chain status in agri-food sector, categorizes available literature, assesses the influential articles, and proposes the holistic framework in agri-food supply chain. From the literature review, it is observed that the research articles have addressed agri-food supply chain up to a certain point and confined to the apt ideas of supply projections, demand projections, supply-demand disparity, traceability, collaborations etc. There is a need for extensive research to reconsider warehouse and location design, supply-demand projections and gap analysis, transshipment strategies and traceability in an integrated manner. The present study proposes holistic framework addressing the issues of supply-demand synchronization, warehouse design, transportation optimization, traceability, vertical integration and farmer’s credit facility.

Beef products demand keeps increasing and its domestic supply is insufficient. Domestic beef production to meet domestic demand is one of priorities in the 2015-2019 Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture. This study aims to examine feasibility of cattle business, channel supply chain, and supply chain management performance of cattle and beef commodities. The method of analysis using approaches of feasibility cattle business, supply chain channels of cattle and beef commodities, and cattle supply chain management at farmers’ level. Analysis results show that small-scale cattle fattening business on cash costs was still profitable, but its profit was lower or incurring loss if based on the total costs. Medium and large business scales were profitable and depending on the race types of cattle business. Supply channels were diverse and quite long controlled by middlemen, slaughters, and inter-regional traders/distributors. Supply chain management performance of cattle commodity was relatively well structured with low to moderate market integration. To improve the supply chain management performance, it is necessary to implement a horizontally-integrated business. In addition, it is urgent to involve small and medium-large business involvement, as well as partial vertical integration.
