Propionibacterium acnes ATCC 11827 and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC BAA-1683 are bacteria that cause skin infections, namely acne vulgaris and skin and soft tissue infection/SSTI. The increase in the number of resistant bacterial strains, such as MRSA,  requires the search for alternative antibiotics, including using natural ingredients. Red yeast rice is a product of rice fermentation by Monascus purpureus, which is known to have antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cholesterol and immunomodulator. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of several red yeast rice extracts against these bacteria that cause skin infections. The research was carried out through the stages of collecting materials and identifying the yeast isolates, extracting of red yeast rice, phytochemical screening of red yeast rice extract, confirmation of bacterial test, preparation of bacterial test suspension, testing for bacterial resistance, testing for antibacterial activity of red yeast rice extract and determining the value of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the most active extract. The results showed that the ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts had antibacterial activity against P. acnes ATCC 11827 and MRSA ATCC BAA-1683. Both extracts contain compounds from the polyphenols, flavonoids, quinones and saponins group. Ethyl acetate extract was the most active extract with MIC values against P. acnes ATCC 1182 and MRSA ATCC BAA-1683 of 50 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL. The MBC values of ethyl acetate extract against these bacterial tests were 100 mg/mL and 25 mg/mL. The ethyl acetate extract is more active against MRSA ATCC BAA-1683 than against P. acnes ATCC 11827. From the results of this study it is known that red yeast rice has activity against bacteria that cause skin infections, especially against MRSA

Acne is an inflammatory disease that occurs in the skin triggered by the bacteria acne treatment can be done by using natural materials that shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes). This aims of this study were to determining the antibacterial activity of extracts and fractions shiitake mushrooms with broth microdilution method, determining the value of equality shiitake mushrooms with antibacterial comparison and determining the morphological changes of bacteria after exposure to the test sample with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Tests conducted antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus at concentrations used is 1 ppm, 2 ppm, 4 ppm, 8 ppm, 16 ppm, 32 ppm, 64 ppm, 128 ppm, 256 ppm, 512 ppm. Best MIC value obtained in fraction of ethyl acetate and n-hexane fraction of the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of 256 ppm. KBM value of the n-hexane fraction against Staphylococus aureus bacteria at concentrations of 512 ppm and ethyl acetate fraction against bacteria Staphylococus aureus and epidermidis at a concentration of 512 ppm. Value equality is obtained 1 mg of ethyl acetate fraction of shiitake mushrooms equivalent to 5.346 x 10-2 mg of tetracycline. SEM test results showed the presence of antibacterial activity which is indicated by a change in cell morphology, their lumps and their cell wall frown on Propionibacterium acnes were exposed to ethyl acetate fraction.Key words: Acne, Lentinus edodes, antibacterials, microdilution, SEM

ABSTRACTBackground and Objective(s): Infection is the process of entering pathogenic bacteria or microorganisms into the body capable of causing disease. Bacterial infections can cause skin infections such as acne. Acne is inflammation that is accompanied by blockage of the oil glands of the skin and hair (pilosebasea duct). Gardenia jasminoides Ellis is a plant that empirically can be used to treat infectious diseases caused by bacteria. This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity of the extracts of kacapiring leaves (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis) against Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Methods: Making extracts was done by maceration method  using  96% ethanol. The concentrations of extracts  used  were 5%, 10% and  15%,  with chloramphenicol and clindamycin as positive controls and distilled water as negative controls. Antibacterial activity was tested by the Cup-plate technique. Results: The antibacterial activity of kacapiring leaves ethanol extract to S. aureus showed that at concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% the inhibitory power diameters values were respectively 5.58 mm, 9.3 mm and 11.41 mm while the antibacterial activity of extracts kacapiring leaves ethanol to P. acnes bacteria at concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% had inhibitory power diameters of 6.33 mm, 9.25 mm and 11 mm respectively. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of kacapiring leaves has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. At a concentration of 5% and 10%, it shows the moderate category and at a concentration of 15% shows a strong category. Keywords: antibacterial, cup-plate technique , gardenia jasminoides

Bacteria that cause acne include Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes. Nutmeg leaves are plants that contain antibacterial substances that can inhibit bacterial growth. The purpose of this study is to make soap preparations from nutmeg leaf extracts and find out the formula that is most effective in inhibiting the growth of P.acnes and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Nutmeg leaves were extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. Liquid soap preparations are made in 4 formulas. Antibacterial activity test was carried out by the dilution method for MIC and disk diffusion methods to determine LDH liquid soap preparations. Based on the test of the antibacterial activity of 96% ethanol extract, nutmeg leaves have the ability to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus with a MIC value at a concentration of 0.5% and negative on Propionibacterium acnes. Liquid soap preparations in F1 (extract 2%) have LDH values of 9.87 ± 0.41 mm; F2 (extract 4%) has an LDH value of 10.50 ± 0.35 mm; F3 (extract 8%) has an LDH value of 10.70 ± 0.25 mm; F4 (extract 10%) has an LDH value of 11.87 ± 0.25 mm. The highest LDH value is F4 with a concentration of 10% extract, LDH F4 is a formula that has the most antibacterial activity approaching LDH positive control JF Sulfur which has an LDH value of 13.25 ± 0.25 mm

Kayu lubang are plants which one traditionally used to acne treatment. Scientifically acne is caused bacteria’s such as Propionibacterium acnes dan Staphylococcus aureus infection. The growth of Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus be inhibition with phytochemical compounds contained leaves of kayu lubang. The purpose of this research was to identification phytochemical compunds from rude extract ethanol leaves of kayu lubang and which consentration extract that shows the optimum to inhibition growth of Propionibacterium acnes dan Staphylococcus aureus in antibacterial activity test. Phytochemical test conducted qualitative and antibacterial activity test using disc diffusion with concentration 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35% dan 40% in 3 replication. Based on the results showed that in general those leaves contain alcaloid, phenol, tannin and steroid. The optimum inhibition zone results of extract  inhibition bacterial growth at concentration of 40%,  inhibition zone Propionibacterium acnes inhibition zone of 6,83 mm while Staphylococcus aureus bacteria was 5,53  mm. Based on the results of statistical tests DMRT effects of extracts leaves of kayu lubang  against the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes  and  Staphylococcus aureus showed significant differences among for 95% confidence.
