Due to the consequences of changes in fertility and mortality rates, there is an increase in population aging. In this context, the use of potentially inappropriate medications in this population makes nurses important agents in the identification of adverse reactions, requiring their knowledge about these drugs and their effects. The study aimed to verify nurses knowledge about the 2015 AGS BeersCriteria, regarding the potentially inappropriate medications for the elderly, and their adverse effects. It is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study with a quantitative and qualitative approach performed in a teaching hospital in the Triângulo Mineiro, Minas Gerais. Of the 80 professionals, 74.1% reported attending the elderly frequently, and only 3.8% had a specialization course in elderly health. Only 13.8% reported knowing the Beers Criteria. And 69% believe that adverse drug reactions can be confused as a new symptom and because of this, new drugs can be inserted into the therapeutic plan. Three categories emerged: The importance of assertive knowledge about PIMs, The nurse as a fundamental character in ADR, and Knowledge as a reinforcer of care. There is evidence of the need to train nurses to better identify adverse drug reactions so that they can act on these events avoiding the worsening of the individual.

This article aims to nurses practising of Family Health Strategy related to actions directed at the elderly care. It is a qualitative study, converging-assistential, which data were collected between May and June/2012 through interviews and theme workshops with 20 nurses, who work in the Family Health Strategy of a Sanitary District of Florianópolis Municipality, SC. The data analysis involved processes of apprehension, synthesis, theorization and transference, resulting two categories: care to elderly; public Healthcare policy for the elderly. The results sustain discussions about the need of connecting the nurse work and proposal of government policies to the elderly health care. It is strongly recommended permanent education to the professionals already in service, so they can deal with the challenges of population aging.

In recent years, population aging has become an important social issue. We hope to achieve an elderly health care system through technical means. In this study, we developed an elderly health care system. We chose to use environmental sensors to estimate the behavior of older adults. We found that traditional methods have difficulty solving the problem of excessive indoor environmental differences in different households. Therefore, we provide a fuzzy spike neural network. By modifying the sensitivity of input using a fuzzy inference system, we can solve the problem without additional training. In the experiment, we used temperature and humidity data to make an estimation of behavior in the bathroom. The results show that the system can estimate behavior with 97% accuracy and 78% sensitivity.

Visual acuity is an important measurement taken during an eye exam for checking an individual’s ability to see properly and to guide the adjusting of ocular refraction. It is a routine test usually done in a few minutes and with no particularly difficulty. However, this measurement can be more difficult to do in seniors with cognition or communication disabilities. For example, this may be true for a senior with dementia or suffering from aphasia following a stroke. The purpose of this article is to present certain aspects of population aging, data connected with institutionalization of seniors, various conditions that are more prevalent with age, as well as specific factors demonstrating the importance of optimizing vision in seniors. Lastly, this article will provide an overview of various scales available for measuring visual acuity.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure.
