Coxiella burnetii, a cause of infection in humans and several animal species, is transmitted through inhalations and oral route but also tick bites. Its spreading in ruminants has been largely investigated, whereas data about the occurrence of this infection in canine population are scanty. In this retrospective study, blood serum samples of 516 dogs were tested by indirect immunofluorescence assay to detect antibodies against C. burnetii; 42 (8.13%) were positive with titers ranging from 1:64 to 1:512. The highest seroprevalences were detected in dogs aged > 5 years, employed in hunting activity and living in a peri-urban/rural environment. Diagnosis for C. burnetii infection should be always carried out in bitches with reproductive disorders. Moreover, in view of the zoonotic impact of this infection, asymptomatic dogs exposed to ticks’ bites and/or to contact with infected farm animals should be checked, too.

Abstract Background: Difficult tracheal intubation is a common problem encountered by anesthesiologists in the clinic. This study was conducted to assess the difficulty of tracheal intubation in infants with Pierre Robin syndrome (PRS) by incorporating computed tomography (CT) to guide airway management for anesthesia. Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed case-level clinical data and CT images of 96 infants with PRS. First, a clinically experienced physician labeled CT images, after which the color space conversion, binarization, contour acquisition, and area calculation processing were performed on the annotated files. Finally, the correlation coefficient between the seven clinical factors and tracheal intubation difficulty, as well as the differences in each risk factor under tracheal intubation difficulty were calculated. Results: The absolute value of the correlation coefficient between the throat area and tracheal intubation difficulty was 0.54; the observed difference was statistically significant. Body surface area, weight, and gender also showed significant difference under tracheal intubation difficulty. Conclusions: There is a significant correlation between throat area and tracheal intubation difficulty in infants with PRS. Body surface area, weight and gender may have an impact on tracheal intubation difficulty in infants with PRS.

This retrospective study evaluated surgical cases occurring in animals due to human errors that were admitted to the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Kafkas University over six years (2012-2018). A total of 4239 animals were examined and diagnosed with surgical problems caused by humans according to our clinical records. Among these, 462 (294 large ruminants, 147 carnivores, 18 horses and 3 small ruminants) were included in the study. The animals were subjected to harms during interventions for dystocia (n=189), road traffic accidents (n=143), injection failures (n=73), gunshot injuries (n=24), cutting and penetrating injuries (n=22) and other problems (n=11). Recovery was recorded in 420 of treated cases; 18 were euthanized, 14 died, 7 underwent amputation and 3 were slaughtered. Human-induced surgical injuries are worth noting in these cases. Although the majority of the animals were treated, issues such as treatment expenses, weight loss in farm animals during the treatment period and property damages due to road traffic accidents cause serious economic losses. Therefore, owners should be made aware of human errors that generate vital and economic costs. Practices without adequate knowledge or experience should be prevented in the field and veterinarians should supervise their personnel and owners regarding postoperative care and other treatment procedures.

This retrospective study describes toxicity associated with a protocol of lomustine (CCNU) and cyclophosphamide (CTX) in dogs with lymphoma. CCNU was administered per os (PO) at a targeted dosage of 60 mg/m2 body surface area on day 0, CTX was administered PO at a targeted dosage of 250 mg/m2 divided over days 0 through 4, and all dogs received prophylactic antibiotics. Ninety treatments were given to the 57 dogs included in the study. Neutropenia was the principal toxic effect, and the overall frequency of grade 4 neutropenia after the first treatment of CCNU/CTX was 30% (95% confidence interval, 19–43%). The mean body weight of dogs with grade 4 neutropenia (19.7 kg ± 13.4 kg) was significantly less than the mean body weight of dogs that did not develop grade 4 neutropenia (31.7 kg ± 12.4 kg; P = .005). One dog (3%) developed hematologic changes suggestive of hepatotoxicity. No dogs had evidence of either renal toxicity or hemorrhagic cystitis. Adverse gastrointestinal effects were uncommon. On the basis of the findings reported herein, a dose of 60 mg/m2 of CCNU combined with 250 mg/m2 of CTX (divided over 5 days) q 4 wk is tolerable in tumor-bearing dogs.

BackgroundDue to increasing popularity in Sweden during the last decade, alpacas are frequently encountered by practising veterinarians and pathologists. Knowledge regarding their health and diseases under Swedish conditions is, however, limited.ObjectivesTo improve knowledge about the health of alpacas in Sweden by collecting information on diseases and health status.DesignA retrospective study was made of 93 necropsies conducted on alpacas in Sweden during the period 2001–2013.SettingData were obtained from the two major veterinary pathology centres in Sweden. The alpacas were hobby or farm animals and they were submitted by veterinarians in local practices or at a national animal healthcare organisation.ResultsThe digestive system was most frequently affected (29 per cent), with parasitic gastroenteritis (17 per cent) and hepatic disease being especially prevalent (15 per cent fascioliasis and 7 per cent hepatitis). Cardiovascular conditions (9 per cent), systemic diseases (7 per cent) and perinatal deaths were also common, including abortions (10 per cent) and fatal septicaemia (4 per cent). Wasting/emaciation was a frequent finding (26 per cent). Other diagnoses included dermatitis (8 per cent), diseases of the central nervous system (8 per cent), traumatic injuries (7 per cent), neoplasia (5 per cent), pneumonia (5 per cent) and nephritis (3 per cent).ConclusionsThis study identified areas of concern regarding diagnostic and pathological procedures, for which specific measures have been recommended. One particular cause for concern was the number of deaths from emaciation in weanling alpacas during late winter or early spring. For adult alpacas, infectious and non-infectious causes of death were approximately equally frequent. Many of the diseases were considered clinically acute but pathology often showed them to be chronic conditions that had eventually deteriorated and presented as acute cases in the late stages. This study revealed similarities in the health/disease status reported in other European countries and in North America. The results can be used by alpaca keepers and veterinary practitioners to improve management, diagnosis and treatment of alpacas.

Hemocyanin, the respiratory pigment of the scorpion Androctonus australis is composed of 24 kidney shaped subunits. A model of architecture supported by many indirect arguments has been deduced from electron microscopy (EM) and immuno-EM. To ascertain, the disposition of the subunits within the oligomer, the 24mer was submitted to three-dimensional reconstruction by the method of single-exposure random-conical tilt series.A sample of native hemocyanin, prepared with the double layer negative staining technique, was observed by transmisson electron microscopy under low-dose conditions. Six 3D-reconstructions were carried out indenpendently from top, side and 45°views. The results are composed of solid-body surface representations, and slices extracted from the reconstruction volume.The main two characters of the molecule previously reported by Van Heel and Frank, were constantly found in the solid-body surface representations. These features are the presence of two different faces called flip and flop and a rocking of the molecule around an axis passing through diagonnally opposed hexamers. Furthermore, in the solid-body surface of the top view reconstruction, the positions and orientations of the bridges connecting the half molecules were found in excellent agreement with those predicted by the model.
