Inventories of point and diffuse sources and estimated nutrient loads - a comparison for different river basins in Central Europe

A comparison of the estimated emissions (input) with the measured loads at monitoring stations (output) is presented for the large Rivers Rhine, Elbe and its main tributaries and for the River Warnow, a smaller river in the north-east part of Germany. The comparison shows that the discrepancies between the estimated emissions and the measured load is small for the Rhine and its main tributaries, Mosel, Neckar and Main. Large discrepancies were found for the Elbe and its main tributaries. For all investigated river systems a strong relationship exists between the quotient of measured nutrient load versus the estimated sum of point and diffuse emissions of nutrients and the areal specific runoff. A function is derived for the dependency of the sum of retention and/or losses in a river system on the specific runoff and the nutrient concentration in the river. The high accuracy of the estimated retention and/or losses within the different river basins offer the possibility to use these equations for a prediction of the emitted nutrients from measured nutrient load in similar rivers.

The paper presents the flood characterisation of the Haor region in the north-east of Bangladesh. The region consists of a system of Haors, each of which is a saucer-shaped depression and interconnected by a river system. A portion of the Haor area, known as the deeply flooded area, consisting of about 15 Haors, was chosen as the study area. A 1D2D model, with one-dimensional model for the rivers and a two-dimensional model for the Haors, was developed. Flood hydrograph characteristics such as the rising curve gradient, flood magnitude ratio (with respect to the average discharge) and time to peak were assessed for different river floods. Using these characteristics an integrated flood index (FI) was developed. The FI is an aggregated indicator based on the flood hydrograph characteristics and indicates the relative overall severity of a flood. The spatial and temporal variations of the index were investigated as well. The computed FI at different locations of the region and for different flood hazard frequencies provide a broad understanding of the flooding characteristics of the region. The developed methodology can also be applied to other river basins to analyse flooding risk provided some historical flood data are available.

The genus Xyrodromeus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty was established for Afrotropical species of Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) possessing bladelike mandibles. Recently, three new species were described from Madagascar. Xyrodromeus ambiguus n. sp. is established for larvae collected in the North and North-East of Madagascar. It possesses most of the generic features of Xyrodromeus, but differs significantly from all the previously known species by possessing two rows of denticles on the tarsal claws. This species has an intermediate position between Xyrodromeus and Dicentroptilum Wuillot & Gillies. While it may confirm the strong relationship between the two genera, it also opens the question of their validity and could suggest that all these species belong to a single variable and graded genus.

Following a series of international conferences on pollution of the North Sea, the UK Government committed itself in 1990 to reducing the inputs of certain dangerous substances reaching the aqueous environment from point and diffuse sources. The target was a 50% reduction in loadings over the period 1985-95. Metals loadings from rivers and sewage works to the Clyde Sea Area are presented for the period 1990-97. These are compared to trace metals body burdens in mussels collected from shores throughout the Clyde Sea Area over the period 1980-97. For most metals, no clear trend either increasing or decreasing was observed in metals loadings from point sources or in mussel body burdens. The exceptions were cadmium, which showed downward trends with time in loadings and in concentrations in Clyde Estuary mussels, and lead, which showed a downward trend in mussel concentrations. Metals loadings from point sources may have reached baseline levels, below which further reductions will be difficult to achieve. Elevated mussel body burdens of specific metals provided good evidence that some shores are severely affected by point source inputs, others by bulk contamination from far-field point sources, and others by diffuse sources of metals.

A comparison has been made between the metal pollution in several European rivers in various stages of clean-up and management for the period of 1980-1996. The investigated rivers were Rhine, Meuse, Scheldt, Weser and Elbe. The results from this comparison showed that the simple statement that characterizes the river Elbe as ‘the most polluted river in Europe’ is a simplification. Three independent methods are presented to estimate point and diffuse source contributions in emissions and riverine transports. All methods were applied to the Elbe and Rhine rivers to estimate the contribution of point and diffuse sources for six heavy metals. The results of the source apportionment estimates show that there are temporal differences in source strength and source origin. A dramatic drop in industrial inputs and inputs from waste water treatment plants can be observed. The comparison of all methods shows some differences, which might be caused by retention processes (such as sedimentation) in the river system.

The theory of combined systems of extreme control, which is used in technical systems, was developed and adapted in socio-ecological-economic systems. For example, river basins are such systems. A combined extreme control system has been formalized to control the dilution of mineralized mine waters in river sections. A mathematical model of the distribution of water masses and pollution in river beds from point and diffuse sources is proposed on the basis of a system of difference balance equations under the influence of stochastic uncontrolled disturbances. With regard to such conditions as adequate instrumentation, a combined control system has been developed that uses decision-making according to environmental and economic criteria based on the analysis of input and output data simultaneously, identification and tracking of the optimum in conditions of displacement under the influence of the disturbances of extreme characteristics of the system. The structural and functional diagram is represented by the open-loop diagram, the identification of which is carried out on the basis of modeling the process of water dilution in various situations at a specific object. A closed part with a recognition system as a corrector provides feedback. Formalized mathematical models of the dynamics of water masses and pollution from point and diffuse sources are of a general nature and can be used for the basins of other rivers. The extreme control system can adapt to the hydrological conditions and water quality parameters of a particular river. A mathematical model has been formalized for the combined extreme control of mine water dilution in the section of the Ingulets river. The water for dilution comes from a storage pond in the Svystunov gully. Regulatory actions that maintain water quality without exceeding the normative values ​​of maximum permissible discharge are determined. At the same time, water consumption for dilution is minimized. The scenario analysis of the options showed a saving of up to 30% of water resources, namely 17.5 million m3, compared to the dilution carried out in February-March 2021 according to the existing individual regulations.

The municipality of Belém is installed on low ground under a rich and immense system of surface waters that converge for the most part directly into the Pará River system, Marajó Bay, northern fathom of the Amazon River and then the Atlantic Ocean. The Guamá river (estuary) and Guajará bay stand out, bathing its western, north and northeast portions, and numerous tidal channels, as well as several streams converge on the former, as well as several swamps and temporary wetlands. The main urban nucleus, the city of Belém, was installed and continues to do so, along the tidal and igarapé channels, modifying its courses, and polluting them brutally, either by solid waste or by domestic effluents of all kinds without any treatment, in addition to industrial contributions, becoming more serious as the city moves forward in horizontal and vertical buildings. The tides partially assist in this cleaning, by carrying a large part of these pollutants daily to the Guamá River, from this one to the Guajará Bay and then Marajó and Atlantic. Beautiful beaches in the north and northeast of the municipality (Outeiro, Mosqueiro, Farol, Ariramba, Carananduba, Paraíso and Baía do Sol) attract thousands of visitors, which further contribute to general pollution. Although several surveys have already been carried out to assess these impacts and its dilution, it was decided to try a new attack, emphasizing the Tucunduba stream and its drainage in the Guamá river, the Guajará bay on its margin of strong industrial-port impact and then the beaches of the Baía do Sol. Water and solid sediment in suspension (suspended) were collected in three different periods, considering the two tidal cycles, in eight seasons. Measurements of the main physical parameters were made in loco. Next, cations and anions in the waters analyzed, mineralogical identification and chemistry of the suspensates, in addition to micromorphological analyzes were carried out. The results show that the Guamá river and Guajará bay can be still classified as unpolluted natural waters, similar to the white waters of the Amazon region. Tucunduba and the waters of the Baía do Sol, mainly those restricted (swamps and manholes) are strongly altered by human occupation. Cations and anions, as well as microplankton from the suspension sediments, also allow identify the seasonal interference of oceanic interference during the dry season. The suspension materials of these rivers are dominated by quartz, kaolinite, partly muscovite / illite, demonstrating a strong relationship with the sediments of the margins, gullies and flood plains, and also of the Barreiras Formation, Neogene in age, the geological unit that serves as a substrate for the lands of Belém municipality. However, for a more informed assessment, a systematic and much more comprehensive study is recommended from the chemical, biological, mineralogical point of view and still under strong seasonal and tidal cycle controls, preferably for a continuous decade.

The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of hydrometeorological changes at the river basins of the North-East of Russia for the period 1966-2015. Data from 61 meteorological stations showed an increase in the air temperature by an average of 2.3 °C and multidirectional changes in annual precipitation. Most stations are characterized by a significant negative trend of precipitation in winter and a positive annual trend of mixed and liquid precipitation with an increase in their share in autumn months. The presence of statistically significant positive streamflow trends in the autumn-winter period was established for 51 hydrological gauges. We hypothesize that the increase in the low flow is mainly due to the transition of precipitation type from solid to liquid and corresponding increase of runoff in September, continuing in the following months.

This study presents the results of development of the Catalogue and Atlas of giant aufeis-taryns in the North-East of Russia. The characteristics of aufeis in the North-East of Russia for the last 70 years have been generalized and systematized into the Catalogue database using data from the Cadastre of aufeis (1958) and Landsat images for the period 2013-2017 for the Yana, Indigirka, Kolyma River basins and Chukotka area. In total the territory more than 1.9 million km2 is covered by the study. The Catalogue contains the information about the location and characteristics of more than 4600 aufeis fields. The release of the Atlas of aufeis-taryns in the North-East of Russia has been announced. It reveals the history of study, origin, distribution, and specific features of aufeis and is supplemented with medium- and large-scale maps of aufeis with their seasonal and long-term dynamics.

Climate warming and anthropogenic impact causes transformation of geocryological conditions in the river basins of the North-East of Russia. Changes in the thickness of the active layer, configuration of taliks, types of landscapes and other factors lead to transformation of water exchange processes between surface and groundwater runoff. This is manifested in the seasonal redistribution of the components of the water balance, accelerated melting of aufeis, change in the ratio of waters of different genesis in the structure of river runoff. As a result, natural and anthropogenic risks that affect the safe and efficient development of infrastructure and socio-economic processes are increasing. At the same time the system of observations developed in the Soviet period has been practically destroyed in the region. This paper offers a vision of organizing complex multidisciplinary research to assess and project the changes in the conditions of underground and surface water interaction in natural and disturbed river basins of the cryolithozone of the North-East of Russia, including for solving applied problems, based on permafrost, hydrology, hydrogeology, landscape science and geophysics with applications of remote sensing and field research integrated through mathematical modeling methods. To achieve the goal, the identification of natural and disturbed landscapes using remote sensing data, and key areas for detailed research will be selected. Geophysical and drilling works will be carried out within the sites to establish permafrost-hydrogeological conditions, monitoring stations will be equipped to determine hydrogeological, hydrometeorological and geocryological characteristics, including sampling for isotopic and hydrogeochemical studies. As the main key sites, it is proposed to use the area of ​​the Kolyma water-balance station and the site on Anmangynda aufeis, for which there are long-term observation series in the 20th century. Field data will become the basis for improving the mathematical model of runoff formation, considering the relationship between groundwater and river runoff in the conditions of permafrost. Mathematical modeling will make it possible to quantitatively analyze the water balance of rivers considering various factors and project water availability both for specific industrial facilities and for the region as a whole.
