The theory of combined systems of extreme control, which is used in technical systems, was developed and adapted in socio-ecological-economic systems. For example, river basins are such systems. A combined extreme control system has been formalized to control the dilution of mineralized mine waters in river sections. A mathematical model of the distribution of water masses and pollution in river beds from point and diffuse sources is proposed on the basis of a system of difference balance equations under the influence of stochastic uncontrolled disturbances. With regard to such conditions as adequate instrumentation, a combined control system has been developed that uses decision-making according to environmental and economic criteria based on the analysis of input and output data simultaneously, identification and tracking of the optimum in conditions of displacement under the influence of the disturbances of extreme characteristics of the system. The structural and functional diagram is represented by the open-loop diagram, the identification of which is carried out on the basis of modeling the process of water dilution in various situations at a specific object. A closed part with a recognition system as a corrector provides feedback. Formalized mathematical models of the dynamics of water masses and pollution from point and diffuse sources are of a general nature and can be used for the basins of other rivers. The extreme control system can adapt to the hydrological conditions and water quality parameters of a particular river. A mathematical model has been formalized for the combined extreme control of mine water dilution in the section of the Ingulets river. The water for dilution comes from a storage pond in the Svystunov gully. Regulatory actions that maintain water quality without exceeding the normative values ​​of maximum permissible discharge are determined. At the same time, water consumption for dilution is minimized. The scenario analysis of the options showed a saving of up to 30% of water resources, namely 17.5 million m3, compared to the dilution carried out in February-March 2021 according to the existing individual regulations.

<p>This thesis investigates currently observed correlations between the thermal and non-thermal (radio halos) components of galaxy clusters, and seeks to verify the reliability of the proposed radio halo scaling relations presented in the literature. It employs a two-pronged approach: 1) a statistical examination of 15 galaxy clusters; and 2) detailed multi-wavelength analysis of individual objects of interest.  We first investigated radio data for 15 galaxy clusters drawn from the parent REXCESS sample observed with the ATCA at 1.4 GHz to conduct a radio halo survey. Examination of available and re-processed low resolution images revealed cluster-scale diffuse objects in three clusters. One was a radio halo candidate in Abell 3888 (A3888), with the two remaining diffuse sources being radio relic candidates. Follow-up observations of the candidate clusters were performed in July and December 2011, and March 2012, with the upgraded ATCA (CABB). Radio observations with CABB in different array configurations were used to provide the required resolution and sensitivity to a wider range of angular scales to probe the candidate diffuse sources. Examination of the final CABB images confirmed the existence of the radio halo in A3888; however, the remaining candidates were found to be a head-tail galaxy and a very bright radio galaxy with extended emission. As this thesis presents some of the earliest CABB observations, new data reduction and imaging procedures were necessarily developed and presented here.  The statistical component of this thesis uses a halo sample obtained from the combined detection of this work and the literature to derive new correlations between the cluster observables and the radio halo power. The new correlation between the X-ray luminosity and radio halo power derived here is flatter than the previous correlation in the literature, suggesting that massive clusters may host lower power halos than previously thought. In addition, we derived the upper limits of the undetected power of possible radio halos for our non-halo clusters via injection of fake radio halos into the UV data. Our derived upper limits with respect to the anticipated halo powers according to the previous and new correlations and their interpretations are discussed in the thesis. The distribution of the combined upper limits (this work and the literature) compared to our new correlation shows no sign of the strong bi-modality found in the literature.  As previously mentioned, we detected a giant radio halo in A3888. We observed A3888 with the AAOmega spectrograph to infer the dynamics of the cluster. We measured the spectra of 254 galaxies within a 300 radius from the core of A3888 and combined these data with the available literature redshifts in the region. We identified 71 member galaxies of A3888 and examined the density contours, which indicated that the distribution of the member galaxies is elongated along an east-west axis. This elongation might be indicative of dynamical interactions in the cluster; however, there is no statistically significant deviation from Gaussianity in the velocity data. We then carried out a Lee-Fitchett 3D substructure test and found that A3888 is bimodal and has two subgroups.  The head-tail galaxy mentioned earlier in one of the clusters was originally thought to be a radio relic candidate. Owing to available broadband polarimetric data and well-separated jets of the head-tail galaxy, we investigated the magnetic field direction of the head-tail galaxy and conclude it is highly likely that a helical magnetic field is present in the jets.  We present the high-resolution images of our 15 clusters and create a catalogue of the detected sources. Finally, we discuss concerns with the current radio halo detections in the literature, and how radio halo surveys could be designed in the future to yield unbiased results.</p>

AbstractIdentifying and prioritising mine sites for remediation is challenging due to inherently complex hydrological systems and multiple potential sources of mine pollution dispersed across watersheds. Understanding mine pollution dynamics in wet temperate watersheds is particularly challenging due to substantial variability in precipitation and streamflows, which increase the importance of diffuse sources. A tracer dilution and synoptic sampling experiment was conducted in a mined watershed in Scotland to identify the main sources of mine pollution, the relative importance of point and diffuse sources of pollution, and the potential benefits of mine site remediation to stream water quality. Using high spatial resolution metal loading datasets, the major Zn and Cd source areas were identified as point sources of mine water predominantly located in the upper part of the watershed. In contrast, the main sources of Pb were diffuse sources of mine tailings and wastes located in the lower part of the watershed. In the latter case, mobilisation of Pb occurred primarily from a section of braided wetland and an uncapped tailings area. Importantly, diffuse sources of mine pollution were found to be the dominant source of Pb, and an important source of Zn and Cd, even under steady-state streamflow conditions. Mass balance calculations suggest that treatment of the main mine water sources in the upper watershed and capping of the tailings deposit in the lower watershed could reduce stream trace metal concentrations by approximately 70%. These data support the development of conceptual models of mine pollution dynamics in wet temperate watersheds. These conceptual models are important as they: (1) help prioritise those mine sites and features for remediation that will deliver the most environmental and socio-economic benefit, and; (2) provide a means to quantify the importance of diffuse pollution sources that may increase in importance in the future as a result of changes in precipitation patterns in temperate watersheds.

A stringent environmental quality standard for zinc (Zn) has been enacted by regulators because of its toxicity to aquatic life. This study’s objective was to evaluate the variability of Zn concentrations and fluxes in the baseflow and stormflow and to estimate the contribution of Zn from point and non-point sources. By using high-resolution temporal sampling, the suspended solids (SS), iron (Fe), and Zn concentrations were measured in a small agricultural river catchment. Fe, as the natural non-point source, and Zn were evaluated using the end member mixing analysis (EMMA) to identify the source apportionment (point and non-point). The results indicate that in the baseflow, Zn mainly originated from point sources and was possibly discharged by manufacturing industries. By contrast, the non-point sources (diffuse sources) were responsible for extremely high SS, Fe, and Zn levels in the stormflow. In addition, Zn discharge during the stormflow was 93 times higher than that during the baseflow. According to the EMMA, approximately 74% of the Zn was from point sources. River management can be improved if Zn point sources are adequately treated. During a storm event, it is also important to control the particulate Zn released into the river.

&lt;p&gt;The third largest European river Dnipro covers 48% of Ukraine&amp;#8217;s territory. An analysis of the main anthropogenic pressures in the Dnipro Basin was first performed according to the requirements of EU WFD.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Surface water pollution by organic substances and nutrients is principally attributed with point sources, among which the municipal wastewaters play the dominant role. The main load by organic substances and nutrients is caused by the wastewater discharges of big cities with Population Equivalent &gt;100 000; 89% of such cities are located within the sub-basins of Middle Dnipro and Lower Dnipro.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Point sources form 33% of nitrogen and 61% of phosphorus loads in the Dnipro Basin. Diffuse sources related to agricultural production cause incoming of 29% of nitrogen and 36% of phosphorus. Phosphorus is transported to the water bodies mainly with erosion particles.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Natural conditions in the River Basin are one of the reasons of nitrogen load significant share (33%). Humus compounds and nitrogen compounds enter into water bodies due to the high bogginess of the Dnipro Basin upper part, especially the Prypiaty Basin. This leads to winter and summer anoxia in the rivers and upper reservoirs and creates prerequisites for eutrophication of the Dnipro cascade reservoirs. Rivers of the Prypiaty sub-basin, Upper Dnipro, and Desna sub-basins are extremely vulnerable to anthropogenic pollution by nutrients and organic substances that generates the increased background of organic compounds and nitrogen in the Dnipro reservoirs cascade.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The load of the Dnipro Basin surface water by hazardous substances (especially synthetic) still remains insufficiently studied. Currently, information is only available regarding load by heavy metals included to the list of priority substances and some other ones. Water pollution by metals is noted mostly in the Lower Dnipro sub-basin where the most of the metallurgical enterprises are located.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The high application of pesticides (&gt; 3 kg/ha) in 4 administrative Rayons leads to the appearance of risk conditions for pollution of xenobiotics in 50 surface water bodies (SWBs).&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Dnipro reservoirs cascade serves as a powerful geochemical barrier causing heavy metals and pesticides deposition in bottom sediments. The highest pollution by metals is noted in the sediments of the Dnipro reservoirs that receive the metallurgy enterprises wastewaters. Probability of significant secondary remobilization is foremost noted for Cadmium. Organochloride pesticides content in the bottom sediments is 2 to 5 times lower than maximal allowable concentration in soil.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Water abstraction volume is around 22% of the annual flow of 95% probability. The natural flow of the Dnipro is regulated by 6 large reservoirs. Besides, there are 1072 dams and other cross-sectional artificial installations. Natural morphology changes are observed in a large number of rivers within the Dnipro Basin.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It was found that 56% of the Dnipro Basin SWBs are at risk of failing the &amp;#8220;good&amp;#8221; ecological status.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Hydromorphological alterations cause the main anthropogenic pressure in the Dnipro Basin (concerning 45% of the SWBs). Risks from diffuse sources and point sources are observed in 23% and 5% of SWBs, respectively.&lt;/p&gt;

AbstractChesapeake Bay has a long history of nutrient pollution resulting in degraded water quality. However, we report improvements in chlorophyll a in surface waters and dissolved oxygen in bottom waters at one of three estuarine stations in the Choptank tributary of Chesapeake Bay. We updated a previous nutrient budget for the estuary constructed for reference year 1998 using rates of atmospheric deposition, inputs of watershed diffuse sources (primarily agriculture), and discharges of point sources (primarily human waste) for reference year 2017. Parallel trends suggest that improvements in water quality at the one station were likely due to 20% reductions in direct atmospheric deposition on the estuary’s surface and 78–95% reductions in wastewater N and P due to installation of tertiary treatment. The agricultural sector, the dominant source of N and P, appeared to provide little contribution to improved water quality during this period. Although efforts to reduce nutrient losses from agriculture are common throughout the Choptank basin, widespread reductions from agricultural diffuse sources could make large contributions to improved water quality at all stations in the estuary. The response in the Choptank is similar to those observed elsewhere in the USA, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand due to improved wastewater treatment. Similar to our findings, the upper Potomac River of Chesapeake Bay saw improvements driven by reductions in atmospheric deposition. Unfortunately, few studies elsewhere have shown improvements in water quality due to agricultural management. The data presented here indicate that public and industrial investments in reductions of atmospheric emissions and upgrades to wastewater treatment plants have improved estuarine water quality in the Choptank.
