Abstract Using tetra-n-butyl titanate as raw material and fly ash cenospheres (FAC) as carrier, the photocatalysts of Ag-TON/FAC were successfully prepared by solvothermal and in-situ hydrolysis method. These visible light photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence spectroscopy (FL) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). In this study, methyl orange and ciprofloxacin were used as wastewater degradation targets to investigate the effect of the amount of titanium dioxide and the amount of Ag doping on the activity of photocatalysts. On the basis of this, the optimal ratio of TiO2 to FAC was 2:1 and the optimum doping ratio of Ag was determined to be 15 wt.%. The composite photocatalysts dispersed uniformly and were easy to recycle and reuse, which were benefits in fully utilizing the solar energy. The degradation efficiency remained at more than 60% after being renewed five times for MO and ciprofloxacin. The photocatalysts of Ag-TON/FAC can reduce the environmental burden caused by FAC also.

A novel fly ash cenospheres supported Pt–BiVO4 composites (Pt–BiVO4/FACs) photocatalysts were prepared by modified metalorganic decomposition process, followed by photochemical reduction. The composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and UV–vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) techniques. The results indicate that the visible light absorption of the Pt–BiVO4/FACs composite is greatly enhanced. The Pt element is present in the metallic form and disperses in the composite samples. Photocatalytic activities of the Pt–BiVO4/FACs composites were evaluated by the methylene blue (MB) degradation under visible light irradiation. The results indicate that the photocatalytic efficiency is significantly improved after the Pt species was loaded and the 2 wt% Pt-loaded composite showed the highest photocatalytic activity.

Novel AZ91D Mg alloy/fly-ash cenospheres (AZ91D/FAC) composites were fabricated by melt stir technique. The thermodynamic analyses of the interfacial reactions, the microstructure observation, and the phase analyses of the AZ91D/FAC composites were investigated. The results showed that the cenospheres were almost filled with Mg alloy matrix. In-situ MgO and Mg2Si phases were formed in Mg alloy matrix and near the interfaces between the cenospheres and Mg alloy matrix. Through the thermodynamic calculation, it can be found that the standard free enthalpy changes of these interfacial reactions are all negative at the temperature of Mg alloy melt preparation in this work, and these reactions can occur.

Three-dimensional (3D) BiOBr/BiOI hierarchical microspheres were successfully fabricated on the surface of fly ash cenospheres (FACs) via a facile one-pot solvothermal method for the first time. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results indicated that the loaded hierarchical microspheres exhibited a uniform distribution, and some aggregation was observed. These well-dispersed hierarchical microspheres were composed of 2D nanosheets, which possess heterojunction structures. Based on the photodegradation tests examining the removal of rhodamine B from water under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), the photocatalytic activity of BiOB/BiOI/FACs was superior to that of BiOBr/FACs and BiOI/FACs. A proposed mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity displayed by BiOB/BiOI/FACs is discussed.

Using Fe (NO3)3⋅9H2O, Y(NO3)3⋅6H2O and citric acid as the main raw material, the YFeO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by ultrasonic assisted process and calcination. The YFeO3 nanoparticles were characterized by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results show that the perovskite structureYFeO3 (YFeO3-800) can be obtained through the calcination of ultrasonic processed YFeO3 precursors at 800 °C, and the resulting product has a particle size of 70 nm and an optical band gap of 2.0 eV. Consequently, the YFeO3-800 nanoparticles show high photocatalytic activity for decomposition of methyl orange under visible-light irradiation.

The novel visible-light-driven Ag/BiVO4 composite photocatalysts were successfully prepared by photo-deposition method. The as-prepared Ag/BiVO4 samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The photocatalytic activities of the Ag/BiVO4 powders were determined by degradation of methyl orange molecules in water under visible light irradiation (λ>400nm). The photocatalytic experiments indicated that the composite samples enhanced photo-activity under visible light irradiation.
