Biofuels in Automobiles: Advantages and Disadvantages: A Review

Background: Biofuels are one of the promising alternative fuel sources for automobiles. The use of biofuels in combustion engines of automobiles showed many advantages and disadvantages. In this study, the advantages and disadvantages of using biofuels in internal combustion engines are reviewed and summarized based on early studies. Biofuels can offer favorable well-towheel CO2 balance in our environment and improve engine power and efficiency. Oxygen contents in biofuels also provide advantages for the fuel combustion. However, biofuels, also showed some disadvantages, like corrosiveness to engine systems and low heating values of biofuels. Boiling temperature, absorption with water, vapor toxicity, and autoignition of biofuels showed advantages for some types and drawbacks for others.

Fast depletion of the conventional petroleum-based fossil fuel reserves and the detrimental effects of the pollutant emissions associated with the combustion of these fuels in internal combustion (IC) engines propelled the exploration and development of alternative fuels for internal combustion engines. Biodiesel has been identified as one of the most promising alternative fuels for IC engines. This paper discusses about the advantages and disadvantages of biodiesel vis-a-vis the conventional petro-diesel and presents the energetic performances and emission characteristics of CI engine using biodiesel and biodiesel-petrodiesel blends as fuels. An overview of the current research works carried out by several researchers has been presented in brief. A review of the performance analysis suggests that biodiesel and its blends with conventional diesel have comparable brake thermal efficiencies. The energy balance studies show that biodiesel returns more than 3 units of energy for each unit used in its production. However, the brake specific fuel consumption increases by about 9–14% compared to diesel fuel. But, considerable improvement in environmental performance is obtained using biodiesel. There is significant reduction in the emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), soot, particulates, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide with biodiesel. But the NOx emission is more with biodiesel compared to diesel. A case study with Jatropha biodiesel as fuel and the current development status, both global and Indian, of biodiesel as a CI engine fuel have been included in the paper.

The article analyzes the effective methods and techniques of diagnosing gasoline internal combustion engines, highlighted the most promising ones. Of the existing seven modern methods considered: thermal control, computer diagnostics, analysis of the composition and quantity of waste gases, technical endoskopirovanie, gauging the compression, the analysis of chemical elements and vibroacoustic. On the presented methods compiled a comparative table on a number of parameters: the cost of ongoing services, the cost of equipment, the length of the diagnostic information content requirements for personnel. The advantages and disadvantages of the methods considered in the parameters. It concludes that characterize the main directions of development of systems of technical diagnostics of internal combustion engines.

The article discusses the development directions of the then internal combustion engines used in automotive vehicles. The regulations in force regarding permissible emission of harmful and toxic compounds force the vehicle manufacturers to systematically reduce their mass and improve the ecological and economic parameters of engines in order to meet stringent requirements. Favorable application parameters are obtained through the use of downsizing strategies and rightsisers in the construction of motors. The article presents both conceptional concepts. The most important features of downsizing and rightsizing engines, their advantages and disadvantages were determined. There is also described the direction of further development of internal combustion engines, which is characterized by the use of both design strategies.

Since the early years of the 21st century, the whole world has faced two very urgent problems: the depletion of fossil energy sources and climate change due to environmental pollution. Among the solutions sought, 2,5-Dimethylfuran (DMF) emerged as a promising solution. DMF is a 2nd generation biofuel capable of mass production from biomass. There have been many studies confirming that DMF is a potential alternative fuel for traditional fuels (gasoline and diesel) in internal combustion engines, contributing to solving the problem of energy security and environmental pollution. However, in order to apply DMF in practice, more comprehensive studies are needed. Not out of the above trend, this paper analyzes and discusses in detail the characteristics of DMF's combustible laminar flame and its instability under different initial conditions. The evaluation results show that the flame characteristics of DMF are similar to those of gasoline, although the burning rate of DMF is much higher than that of gasoline. This shows that DMF can become a potential alternative fuel in internal combustion engines.
